Hello everyone! It has come to my attention that for this entire video, I mispronounced David's last name. The creator of Despair Time said recently that Chiem is pronounced as "Chee" as in cheese and "em" as in seem. I apologize for this mistake.

I love this video! While I don't agree with the entire interpretation, mostly because that weird monologue about Arei's killer doesn't seem like a lie, and I doubt David was an accomplice, it was still really interesting to see someone else's thoughts on the story and David! My favorite was Nico, but they've kinda fallen off due to their attempted murder being a bit confusing, so it's Arei now. I love her arc, and I'm happy with its conclusion. Because even if David told her she couldn't change, she still went to Eden after receiving the note, which means Arei still believed she could change. Just sucks she had to die.

Fantastic video! Your analyses are extremely good. I didn't think I could get more excited for what's to come of Despair Time, but you certainly managed it! If you don't mind, I'd like to share my reading of David as well, since it's actually quite different from yours. You see, I, like quite a few other people, think that David's "evil" persona is actually just another fake personality, one he's using to delude himself. Why? Because I actually hold that David genuinely believes he drove Arei to suicide. Keep in mind MonoTV says a trial will be held "as long as we can blame someone else for the murder" (paraphrased), which is ambiguous enough that one could argue driving someone to suicide counts as a murder. The main reason I believe this is his breakdown in the middle of what we have of the trial, where he goes on about how horrible Arei's killer must be. The breakdown is too depressing and cynical for his cheery persona, but it also contradicts his evil persona, since that one supposedly *wants* murders to happen ("waiting for 4 days for another murder was too boring"). In other words, that breakdown is likely a reflection of his true feelings. Which, if he believes he "killed" Arei, would mean this is self-hatred bubbling up. This would tie back to what he told Xander about being a role model. While it is possible that was just a manipulation tactic, the best lies always hold some truth to them, so I think it's possible some of his real feelings were present in that speech. What he tells Xander is that it's hard being a role model, because he has "a lot of people to dissapoint". If you think about it, this is exactly what happened with Arei. He inspired her to change, then told her she couldn't; he dissapointed her. And he may believe that dissapointment was what drove her to suicide. In fact, this would actually help with the whole "Teruko foil" thing. When Teruko let her guard down around Xander, she got stabbed. When David let his guard down around Arei, telling her how he really felt ("people can't change"), she ends up dead, and he, the blackened. He may have actually wanted to help her in the beginning in some way, only to dissapoint her with the truth. It would be pretty hard to fake that blush when Arei hugged him, after all. The other big reason is that his evil persona is in itself contradictory. There are times when he denies killing Arei, only to immediately swerve and admit to her death anyways. And no matter what he's actually trying to achieve by doing this, getting himself killed by pretending he's the blackened doesn't help him in any way. All the hoops he goes through, changing his story to fit the evidence? That's just an extension of the hard-headedness he showed in the first trial when Teruko was accusing Xander of stabbing her. He likely is quite arrogant, and believes his own mind and judgement over anyone elses. If he thinks he's the blackened, then he *has* to be. So, why does he do this? I believe it's because he is, in a way, trying to manipulate *himself* into thinking he's an irredeemable monster who deserves death, so he doesn't feel as bad when he gets executed. He said he didn't want to be as pathetic as Min, right? If that holds any amount of truth, he'd want to get through with the argument and straight into voting time as fast as possible, and acting like a dick is just the fastest way to do that. He's manipulating the others to vote for him quickly, to look at him without pity, so he doesn't have to face the "truth" that he accidentally got Arei killed while trying to help her. But of course, that isn't the truth, as he has no idea how the murder actually happened. Which is what makes me believe he didn't actually manipulate anyone into doing it, either. That, and the fact that acting like a monster doesn't help him at all if he doesn't believe himself to be the blackened. A manipulator like him isn't going to do something that doesn't benefit him; there has to be at least a roundabout reason he's oding this, like the thing I mentioned before about going out as quickly as possible. Of course, he may actually just be trying to get himself killed, but then what about that "the killer is horrible" breakdown he had before? Overall, it's hard to read exactly what David's trying to accomplish with his reveal, and I think your interpretation is very plausible, too. It's impossible to tell which is right before the hiatus ends, I believe. There is one more thing that makes me believe David manipulating the killer is improbable, though, and that is the method itself. You see, after obssesing about it for a few hours -because I'm clinically insane-, I think I have a solid grasp on what the killer actually did to Arei, and let me tell you, it is *elaborate*, and it is *brutal*. I'm not gonna get into it here (I could if anyone asks), but it involves using the ball of clothes, the carousel as a pulley, and the water jugs to practically torture Arei and hang her from the ceiling railings before dropping her to snap her neck. It feels like something too brutal to do just for the greater good, so I feel like the killer would need some preexisting grudge to do something like it. Maybe David could have exploited that, but again, I believe he thinks he genuinely drove Arei to suicide. And that's why I believe the killer has to be Levi. Not only does the method maybe require quite a bit of strength, he also actually got Arei's motive about destroying her sister's lives, and that may have genuinely angered someone who seems to still care about his family based on the conversation at the start of the chapter ("we were all bad influences on each other" - he sees his disownment as a good thing only because it benefitted both him and his family). And, come on, you can't give the victim of a murder a motive like *that* and NOT have it be relevant. I agree with you on all the remaining motives; the murder one has to be Levi's. (Fun fact about that: early in the trial, after Everyone's Account, Teruko lists off all the people who haven't had their motives revealed yet. Interestingly, she actually includes Xander on that list, despite David claiming that was the motive he received. This could have been a mistake, since no one comments on it, but I believe it's an early indication that she doesn't believe a word out of David's mouth) That said, another fun fact: alibis don't matter, actually. In the cliffhanger, Charles cuts in when David mentions the time of death, saying he realized something bigger while trying to prove the guy's innocence. As many point out in the comment section of ep 11, he probably noticed the note Arei received doesn't specify between 7:30 PM or AM, and the fish could have been kept in the water jugs. In other words, the murder likely happened at 7:30 AM, when no one has an established alibi. Levi still did it, mind you, but I actually don't really know how they're gonna prove that. Great video! Always lovely to see others going as insane for killing games as me. I would love to see any future video about fangans you put out! That mastermind video sounds super cool! TL;DR: I respectfully disagree with the reading of David, as I actually consider his evil persona to be a fake one built up as a form of defense against the guilt he feels for believing he drove Arei to suicide. He actually may have had no part in the actual murder. I agree with all the remaining motives, and strongly believe Levi is the killer after trying to get a basic idea of how the murder happened.

Thank you so much! I enjoy hearing other people's interpretations of the characters I talk about, especially since in this case, David's true intentions are still up in the air. I have heard a few interpretations that he is just incredibly self-loathing and guilty for letting Arei d!e, but we will have to wait and see how this turns out *puts imaginary opera glasses up to my eyes*

@alfiebell5032 I’ll try to be brief and skip most of the actual reasoning, just saying what I think happened. I’m planning to make a tumblr post later talking through all of it. -The killer killed Arei at 7:30 AM, as the note never stated if the murder was at night or in the morning. This is likely what Charles realized, since he cuts David off when he mentions time of death. This gives the killer a lot of time to set up unimpeded. -So, the first thing the killer does, before nighttime, is grab water from the relaxation room and put it in the water jugs found in the trash can. This explains the presence of fish in the scene. -Now at night, the killer grabs the long rope found underneath the carousel and ties one end to the ball of clothes Charles finds in the dressing room. They throw the ball over one of the railings of the playground, which wouldn’t require much strength since it’s light and the killer can climb on the swing set if needed. When the ball falls, you now have a rope above the railing. The ball of clothes likely hit one of the lights on the way up, displacing it and causing it to flicker, as MonoTV states. -Then, untie the rope from the ball of clothes and tie a knot around one of the handlebars of the carousel. That way, by spinning the carousel, it acts as a sort of pulley which would allow one to pull something up with. -At 7:30 AM, Arei arrives, and the killer overpowers her in a fight and binds her wrists with duct tape. The scuffed floor is likely a result of this struggle. -For some godforsaken reason, the killer ties the ends of the shorter rope to the handles of the water jugs, and ties the middle around Arei. This will make sense later. -Now, the killer spins the carousel to pull Arei as far up as they can, along with the water jugs. Once high enough, they make the carousel spin the other way, letting Arei free fall for a bit, before abruptly stopping it from spinning. This would also make Arei abruptly stop falling. The extra height, combined with the added weight of the water jugs, make her neck snap. Additionally, the handles of the water jugs snap as well, explaining why they look like that when we find them in the trash. -The killer then retrieves the longer rope and sets up Arei as we found her, hanging from the swing set. They also drop all the water with the fish on the floor. I believe they may also notice the rope left marks on the carousel, and, worried their trick would be found out because of that, decided to cover it with duct tape. Dispose of the evidence, and reunite with everyone at 8:00 for the motive. It’s not perfect, it leaves quite a few questions, I have no idea why the killer even did most of this, and doesn’t really clarify the killer much, but it’s what I have with the evidence we’ve been provided.

I think from a plot-writing standpoint, the key to solving whodunit has to lie in the last piece of prominent plot that hasn't been dealt with so far in the trial --- the Nico conducting murder incident. This incident is so jarringly prominent and so close to the murder that it makes no sense it serves only as something that would happen in later chapters, let alone a flashback comparison between the now-and-then gym was brought up specifically before the trial commenced. It is highly likely the missing friction tape on the pullup bar is to be addressed here. Two possibilities arise, and it comes down to whether or not the tape on the ground is the tape peeled off from the bar. If it is the culprit has to be either Eden or Ace for obvious reason, Eden virtually being the only candidate. But this would be a poor plot writing choice as to the justification of Eden being outlandishly hypocritical and the way the story would go i.e. descending Teruko into further madness. I am aware of the dialogue box blocking the missing tape scene but I'd like to think it is an art discrepancy since the one with tape has Ace on the ground and the one missing Ace stood up. And even if it is a hidden trick, it is not supposed to be observed only by the audience, because the in-game characters had to have an inconspicuous way(to the audience) to notice that to solve the puzzle, not the other way around(audience know but characters don't). Also, the tape is very neatly wrapped, if it is detached from the bar it would look a bit loose to make sense. So the way I see it, this incident first serves to remind the group the friction tape was already gone when Nico conducted his murder. Someone late at night, secretly but coincidentally prior to Nico, stole the tape and very likely was setting up his contraption during that time. In-game characters are gonna be aware of this during later trial. Then the question is, who do we know was active during that time? Teruko was about to fetch her spare clothes, Eden was about to help bring clothes to Teruko, Nico&Ace having their drama. So, who is the missing piece? LEVI. When Ace chased down to the dorm ranting, Levi was the only one who readily came out, suggesting others were asleep or resting. Thanks to the urgent nature of this incident no one at present bothered to ask each other why they were active. The plot conceals why Levi is active. I think this, plotwise has to function as an indicator that Levi was the one actively doing something meaningful during this time, which could only be preparing his murder scheme. Levi is also the most likely person to have overheard Eden&Arei. At the beginning of chp2 Levi showed his emotionless nature and specifically said he ''wants to keep trying to become a good person like you Eden". Then plotwise it could easily be that he has been trying to follow Eden as much as he could to learn her behavioral pattern, thus secretly witnessing the scene. It all makes sense.
