The illusion of being connected | Gen. McChrystal | TEDxMidAtlantic

General Stanley McChrystal is the co-founder of McChrystal Group and is a Senior Fellow at Yale University's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs where he teaches leadership. He also heads the Aspen Institute Franklin Project to encourage and promote national service. The General is a former Commander of US and international forces in Afghanistan and his career in the U.S. Army spanned 34 years.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

He is an amazing speaker. So many military officers do not have this skill.

Such a great general. He said: "I need more I-am-who-I-am troops in Afghanistan." Because of how physically strong the people are there and naturally dominant.

Indeed, I am not all that old (born in the mid 80's!), but I grew up without Wifi etc. and I even *gasp* do leave my phone at home very often (not during the day, but when I go out with friends! I don't want to be called by anybody then! Seriously! Sadly too many people don't understand this anymore ("But what if something happens!" - Hey kid? I don't care, I am having a good time with friends and I don't want to be interrupted and I don't want to constantly check the damn phone either!))

A good thoughtful talk by General McCrystal. us "digital immigrants" have perspective about what he says. The "digital natives", not so much.

If a group of leaders were to socially meet to know one another as suggested, they’re likely to become more dysfunctional. The only value with this lecture is the connection a military leader has is always in need of more intelligence.
