Fun fact about the hell fire song, the red-robed people who show up that Frollo seems scared of are representations of inquisitors from the inquisition. This explains why he is so terrified of them.

@@Phoenixdark1 Perhaps, but bear in mind, Frollo isn't thinking clearly, and Frollo is "imagining" their response rather than actually talking to the regular people. This is in Frollo's head, it's a pretty messed up place to be already, I doubt he was thinking rationally about how his Contemporaries in the inquisition would respond. But I do like your point.

The Spanish Inquisition was a very new organization at the time, and was primarily concerned with eliminating political threats to Isabella and Ferdinand in both Aragon and Castile, as the church was the only governing body that could cover both. Persecution of heretics wouldn't really become their forte for a few more decades. Not sure why a French judge would feel any particular fear of them in the 1480's.

Frollo is the scariest villain Disney has ever created, purely because he’s a very real evil. Phoebus is more than most people give him credit for. People want to see characters who lash out at the first sign of injustice like they have nothing to lose, who magically know when things are going to go to far. But Phoebus is an example of a real person on a real situation. He gauges it, feels consistently uncomfortable, then finally decides to take a stand when it comes to taking innocent lives. I love Phoebus' character and if I wasn't already obsessed with Clopin, Phoebus would be my man.

As a counterpoint, Phoebus to me represents power and desire in the hands of someone GOOD. He ultimately rallies the people against corruption and changes his ways for love, earning the respect of Esmerelda unlike Frollo. Additionally, I think having a bittersweet ending for Quasimodo instead of a happily ever after is more compelling, as it shows his journey to happiness doesn't require a love interest, but self acceptance.

It really gives off those vibes that you decide the first character to show nothing but positivity to Quasimodo from the start, Esmeralda, didn't get with him because he's ugly and that's the lesson. Not "everyone" actually seeks that sweet connection, nor do I see the point in really reducing someone's happiness to one sole thing. Even across the movie, the matter of love with Esmeralda never felt framed like it was the real way for Quaisomodo to be happy, it was just the natural response of Quasimodo getting the thing he had been taught he'd never get: Acceptance, attention, validation. If you had meant actual love and not just romantic love, I may have agreed that's what he most wanted.

Quasimodo idealized Esmeralda. While she was an angel, to frollo she was a temptress. The only one who saw her for what she was, it was Phoebus. he saw it as a good person regardless if she was a gipsie, and angel or a temptress. Quasimodo's journey was of self-acceptance and to be out there (his character song) he was accepted by the people, he earned some good friends. I mean he disliked phoebus and ended up caring for him too...im a big Quasimodo simp and I accept that Esmeralda should have ended with none other but Phoebus.

The two were homeschooled and are now allowed to attend high school but aren't allowed out. All the orphaned boys like Aladdin and Flynn stay at Goob's Home for Boys. Esmerelda is a huge activist. Kuzco is running for student body president and pretends he's in a relationship with Jasmine. Belle's parents are out of town so she has to stay with the Beast (in human form) who is in the emo clique along with Megara. Ariel and Jim are in Alien Club because both like other worlds. And a bunch of movie plots are happening at the same time. It's really cute.

This film was back when Disney wasn’t afraid to get dark. If this had been released very recently, people would complain about its dark atmosphere and how it’s too scary for younger children. These days we have movies like Frozen, Tangled, Zootopia, and Wreck-it Ralph that, while having dark moments in them, kind of play it a little too safe. Despite those being good films, I kind of miss the days when Disney movies were a lot more intense. The Hellfire scene alone is a perfect example of how dark this film can get. In my opinion, the thing that keeps it from being the best Disney film was those damn gargoyles causing tonal whiplash. It’s still a very amazing film, though!

Quasimodo is clearly the most impactful Disney character, Esmeralda is one of the best Disney women, and Frollo has what it takes to be the most disturbing and terrifying of Disney villains. And how not to evoke the songs of this film: small I loved to sing Infernal (but if I had known its deep meaning...). And the intro song is easily one of Disney's favorite intros. In short, this film may well move away from the original work of Victor Hugo, it's an excellent cover of the book... Too bad we had a sequel, but it's better to remember the first. I've seen people dissect "Hellfire" and I'm pretty sure Frollo knows he's evil, since the red cloaked figures likely represent Frollo's inner thoughts and they sing "mea culpa" and "mea maxima culpa" which means "my fault" and "I have failed" he tries to deal with this inner turmoil in the most wicked way. He places the blame on others as apposed to acknowledging his sins. For example, he doesn't try to repent lusting for Esmeralda, he blames Esmeralda for being so beautiful and enchanting. He makes himself look holy by making everyone else out to be demons. He believes the only way to be on top is for everyone else to be beneath you.

Bells from 15 to 20 inches weigh from 75 to 150 pounds. And if Quasimodo had done the bells for most of his life and climbing the church (also if the theory that the gargoyles are not alive and its all in Quasimodo’s mind and he is the one moving around the gargoyles which each one weigh about 1.5 pounds individually) well of course he is strong

Also a cool detail is that during the end of hellfire, the solder who told Frollo that Esmeralda had escaped was basked in an heavenly blue and white light while Frollo was in the hellish red and orange light. This symbolizes that God gave Frollo a chance to do the right thing and let Esmeralda go, but Frollo refused and gave into his sins as he turned towards the fire, implying that he’s made his final choice and that he is going to hell.

💃 Part of the reason that Disney chooses not to include Esmeralda among it's "Princess" dynasty has to do with the fact that her speaking and singing voices were played by two different people. Demi Moore was an extremely popular actress at the time, so the brass at Disney figured that her presence would be a draw. The problem was that she isn't a singer. The singing voice wound up going to a complete unknown who to this day, remains completely unknown (which is weird). I think your fondness for this movie probably has something to do with it's more adult oriented themes. I've never considered it to be a kid's film. I've mentioned this before, but if you're looking for a great CGI animated film that would go perfectly with the Halloween season, check out Tim Burton's "9" (2009). Among other things, it includes maybe the most bad-ass female character in all of CGI animation, voiced by Jennifer Connelly. She is constantly coming to the rescue of all the male characters. 😉👍

Probably someone has already mentioned it, but in the original book, Captain Phoebus de Chateauper is a character no less evil and disgusting than Frollo himself. He is engaged to Fleur-de-Lys, but nevertheless intends to seduce, use and abandon Esmeralda before marrying. When he is about to get closer, Frollo attacks him, the captain of the guard escapes alive, but accuses Esmeralda of witchcraft, seduction and an attempt to murder him, only to prevent his fiancée from finding out about the attempted adultery with a gypsy on the eve of their wedding. Disney unfortunately turned this character into a positive one, because how would it be that a handsome guy could be negative ?? Likewise, Disney did not want too much controversy and changed the character of Frollo from archbishop to judge. In addition, comedy characters of gargoyles spoiled the overall tone of the animation, but apart from these few details, the film is wonderful, beautiful animation, music, songs etc. But what hurts me the most is that Phoebus spoiling me for the rest of this adaptation. PS. I would like to add that there is no happy ending in the book. Esmeralda, despite Quasimodo's efforts, is taken from the cathedral and hung somewhere on a tree. Then, under unknown circumstances, her body disappears. When a long time shift follows and a group of people discover the mysterious grave, they find the decaying body of Esmeralda and Quasimodo.

Disney most likely changed his character because why would they portray Phoebus character that way??? It’s way to much for kids, which this movie is for… that’s like saying Disney are cowards for making Eric choose Ariel because he didn’t choose her in the original, but of course the cute prince has to fall in love due to personality and not looks Also, changing frollo didn’t do much considering they portrayed the character being led by religion and didn’t hide that

It's not realistic that Madeline would fall for Quasimodo, not even with his newly acquired status and fine clothing. The first movie basically says "be a good person even if you're ugly and get rejected and you will suffer for it". Disney just resorted to feeding people a nice lie.

  • @AMStryx

    @AMStryx

    Жыл бұрын

@@markmane4548 1) Quasi being a GENUINELY "good person" as you say even while being "ugly" and getting "rejected" ultimately lead to the end of his suffering at the very end of the 1st movie(when his better status truly was "newly acquired"). So being a GENUINELY good person(not false-good) till the end ultimately ensures that he will no longer "suffer for it" like he used to. 2) The sequel takes place years after the 1st film as evidence by Phoebus and Esmeralda's son(Zephyr) being around 5 years old, at least. So Quasi's status and clothes are not by any means "newly acquired" since he's had them for years(especially since the status was acquired by the end of the 1st film). So Disney did NOT actually *lie* about anything. Good looks are ultimately worthless in the end since they're temporary at best(age will inevitably take good looks away no matter how much people try to prevent the natural ravages of time). A good soul and character trumps appearances. I actually speak from experience and can honestly say that I haven't been staying with my man for over 7 years for his looks(nor did I get with him for his looks). Also, I have no interest in his money since he struggles financially just as much as I do. Sex doesn't play much into it either since I'm Asexual and he's Demi-sexual. He makes me feel safe by accepting me for who I am and vice versa. If you truly believe that it's unrealistic for anyone to fall in love with someone other than for their appearance, there's only 2 logical possibilities I can think of. A) You've had an exceptionally poor sampling of GFs(or whatever) and possibly need to surround yourself with better and far less shallow people - OR - B) You are your own problem and part of the cause/problem that allows such beliefs to continue existing.

@@AMStryx 1)Despite being a noble character, in the end Quasi accepts his unfortunate circumstances and gives up on a huge part of life. Being good doesn’t relieve him of his needs. It’s apparent at the start of the first movie how he suffers because of his loneliness. 2)Relatively new, but still. He’s also somewhat more confident in the 2nd movie. Nothing he can do about his abysmal looks though. Madeline’s face when she sees his face? Utterly revolted. The girls I’ve watched the movie with were all repulsed by him, whether openly or not. How can you blame them? Some of them commented on his ugliness and laughed at him. Appearance ms matters for the overwhelming majority of people. Disney chose to ignore Madeline’s instinctive revulsion in order to give Quasi the happy ending he couldn’t get in the first movie he so desperately craved. Looks matter since they play a major part in attracting a partner (which happens at a young age, when you still retain them), ultimately proving very important. Personality also essential. Good nature can be a nice touch but most people are happy as long as you’re good to them and not unnecessarily bad to anyone else. It’s unlikely to the point of being virtually impossible that someone would pick the hunchback. Someone who is ugly but less than Quasimodo, I could see them having a chance, never said they don’t. It’s nonetheless way harder and they’ll face far more frustrations and romantic hardships.

@@markmane4548 I don't think you've realized just how significantly you've reinforced the possibility that you are surrounded by shallow and potentially toxic people. No friends/family/SO is always better than having bad friends/family/SO. 1) Culture/Society continues to feed people the LIE that a romantic relationship is the be-all-end-all, when it's NOT. Not even close. Family and friends are arguably far more essential than romance. Also, it's incredibly unhealthy to rely solely on 1 single person to be EVERYTHING you need. A) Because while a single person can do and be just about anything, they can't do nor be EVERYTHING(there's a reason they say it takes a village to properly raise a child). B) To rely solely on 1 single person for everything is to be completely isolated(Frollo being the prime example of why you never "put all your eggs in 1 basket" and rely solely on 1 person). So the LAST thing he truly NEEDS is to continue relying solely on 1 person/relationship to live a truly fulfilling life. Also, the only thing any person essentially needs is HEALTHY interpersonal connection(ergo GOOD friends and family), NOT ROMANCE. You also missed what it is that Quasi truly wanted the most. He wanted to be accepted by his society, to truly belong. By the end of the 1st film he got all that, and therefore got his truly happy ending. Also, in the most successful and HEALTHY marriages, the couple describe it as like being married to their BEST FRIEND. The only truly significant difference between a platonic friend and a romantic partner is physical intimacy(ergo SEX). That's it. A truly healthy romantic relationship is meant to be based off of more than just sex. In fact, the strongest possible foundation to can base a romantic relationship on is FRIENDSHIP. Quasi didn't give up on a "huge part of life" in the 1st movie. He only gave up on Esmeralda. There are also plenty of signs in the sequel that prove Quasi hadn't totally given up on romance by then either. 2) Disney didn't ignore Madeline's initial revulsion. She went back to her boss(?) to try to back out of his plan, and he made is clear that horrible things would happen to her if she refused to keep trying to get close to Quasi. Again, her revulsion was NOT ignored. It was overridden. She was left with little choice but to overcome her revulsion for the sake of her own survival. They did something almost identical in the OG Beauty and the Beast. Belle was initially just revolted by Beast's appearance, and could've left her father instead of taking his place(and her father was begging her to leave). Belle overrode and overcame her revulsion to save her father, and Beast didn't even have a good personality and attitude to help his case. True, Belle's case was more selfless and Madeline was self motivated. In the end of both cases, it only took getting to know the PERSON to overcome the appearances. While Beast did regain his human form, Belle did NOT immediately recognize him. Again, you completely missed what it was the Quasi TRULY wanted MOST in the 1st movie. He wanted acceptance and to belong in his society, and by the time of the sequel he had definitely gained all and more. More in the form of a truly loving family consisting of Phoebus, Esmeralda and Zephyr(Quasi basically became adopted as a brother to Phoebus and Esmeralda and an uncle to Zephyr). Definitely a significant improvement over Frollo, and it's clear that Quasi had completely stopped crushing on Esmeralda for a while by the time of the sequel. Though you are likely right about Disney giving Quasi a romantic interest, to provide him with the traditional/typically "happy ending" based on the completely BS LIE that's still being being fed to people that the ONLY way to have a "truly happy ending" is to have a romantic partner. Thank gods, Disney has finally and mostly stopped feeding into that complete and total BS LIE. You need FAR MORE than just a romantic partner to live a TRULY HEALTHY, FULFILLING and HAPPY LIFE. A romantic partner alone is NOT NEALY ENOUGH. "The girls I’ve watched the movie with were all repulsed by him, whether openly or not." Again, you've significantly reinforced how shallow and potentially toxic those women truly are. Just because something is "normal/commonplace" does NOT automatically make it GOOD nor RIGHT. Normal and Good/Right are not synonymous terms. *Also, the "majority" is not automatically good nor always right.* Back in the human races beginning, the only thing that mattered was that your mate was strong and healthy enough to survive and provide for each other. While Quasi may have still faced difficulty in that setting, it would never be truly impossible for him to acquire a mate since his defects and deformities didn't make it impossible for him to survive and provide for a mate. If anything, his exceptional strength would've gone a long way in overcoming his deformed appearance. Nowadays, appearances are judged purely on a cosmetic basis and not a survival basis. In the present day, appearances ONLY matter as much as the MONEY that's made off of it. While you are right about it being highly unlikely that someone would choose Quasi regardless of his looks, you are absolutely WRONG about it being "virtually impossible"(and therefore unrealistic).

Honestly, you're not missing the mark when it comes to Frollo. He is a full-blown narcissist, and he lives in a society that enables his false sense of entitlement over other people, even to the point of taking their freedom and lives. Quasi is being used as a scapegoat, a receptacle for his narcissistic caregivers' shame and disgust that he lacks the emotional maturity to deal with on his own. Frollo is dependent on others to regulate his own feelings, because he lacks the insight to do it on his own, which is why he never misses an opportunity to blame others for the violence and destruction his actions cause. If you want to find out more about narcissism and narcissistic abuse, I would highly recommend watching Dr. Ramani Durvasula, she has a KZread channel and it's very informative.

They try so hard to keep religious doctrine against their own desires that they don't even dare to formulate/ talk about them with friends or family out of fear to be judged. But then if they follow them or show weakness in their facade the externalise the guild. It wasn't them, they try to be good persons, obviously the devil or somebody else involved made them do it, they are the evil ones that needs to be punished. This in the long run leads to victim blaming in case of sa and other stuff.

I adore this movie and the reason we love it so much is because we know Quanzie is a beautiful person that we would all be friends with, and love and we also see Judge Claud Frodo that embodies our flaws and our negative attributes. Yes, his evil but he has been corrupted and we all realise we can also be so easily corrupted just the same and that is why we can relate to him. He thinks he is good and right like many of us feel we are good and right, but we maybe are not, and we need to see and catch ourselves too truly be good. This is my favorite Disney movie. Frollo works because he has power. Basically, he makes the law and by that logic he can do no wrong. But all the song Hellfire is literally him singing blasfemy after blasfemy. First asking why he feels something completly natural like feel attracted to a woman when he is "pure", then excusing himself for feeling something for Esmeralda, then asking god why he made men weaker than the temtations of the Devil, then asking to destroy Esmeralda or have her, if he can't have her no one can't. Here a pause of what he says. That guard was literally an immediate answer of Maria, giving him one last chance of getting out of this dark path. the guard tells him that Esmeralda escaped, there he has a chance to let her go and keep going with his life, or sink more in his insane desire and denial and go to hell. And he chose the later. Then he vainly ask for mercy on Esmeralda, believing himself purer of soul than her, and for him, feeling sorry of something that is completly normal. And declares that either he has Esmeralda or no one will have her. In his death, he literally asked for god to kill him when he said "and he shall smite the whicked and send them into the firy pit." There he literally said "strike me down." And for a man who wanted answers from god, he got them. A dark character from beginning to end.

This is a film I enjoyed as a kid and have found a new appreciation for as an adult, especially after 5 semesters of Latin in college. Of the films of the Disney Renaissance, this film is amongst the best. It is also amongst Disney's darkest films. Quasimodo-Patron Saint of the Friend Zone

Sophie, you are beautiful and it was a pleasure rewatching an old Disney classic with you! The sassy commentary on Frollo’s gaslighting and faces made them even funnier! Very fun reaction video!

Frollo was legit like, the BEST, most intimidating Disney villain in any of their stories. (Not that this is Disney's story, but just the way they did this version, I mean) I'm so afraid that they're going to do one of those soulless live-action remakes of this movie and take away everything that made Frollo work as a villain. Even worse, if they try to give him a "redemption arc" or something because current-day Disney is more worried about appealing to the conservatives and old Disney wasn't afraid to show this scary side of religion. :/

My favorite character in the movie is Clopin the Jester or fool or whatever he's supposed to represent. He's just a very good character (besides trying to hang Quasimodo and Feebus but he's trying to protect his people) and i'm sad that he had so little screen time. He's my favorite character.🃏

It's hard to find one darker than this for Disney. Mainly because it is more realistic than the others. And yes, I remember the gargoyles.

Yeah, this movie and its soundtrack give me chills every time. I hated it as a child, simply cause Quasi didn't get Esmeralda. But that was my immature child mind not understanding any of the story. I rewatched this as an adult, and realized it was a masterpiece. Probably THE masterpiece of Disney in my opinion. Also, Esmeralda was such a strong female character.

I think Stephen Schwartz took part in elaborating the music, the same one that composed the Prince of Egypt songs.

I used to watch this movie on repeat as a kid. And a lot of stuff went over my head. I don't even remember that scene with Esmeralda and Phoebus in the church. And so many scenes where I'm like wow that happened in a Disney movie.

My theory about Phoebus; is that he is actually a spy sent by a French Nobleman/King to investigate some reports/rumors about Frollo's actions with orders to go along and when he had seen enough report back, he just got reckless with the burning of innocent civilians, and as such was forced to rapidly change plans

Some years ago Alan Menken worked on a stage version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which is even better than the animated movie and even darker - as dark as Hugo's Notre Dame de Paris, I must say; not that I'm complaining XD - you should be able to find some recording of it on KZread, but I warn you, it will break your heart. It was to go on Broadway but was cancelled in favor of Frozen because Frozen was easier to sell and also they didn't want to pay for the 30+ elements of the choir. I will never forgive them, but I have to admit that the Frozen musical is great, especially because they casted Ciara Renée as Elsa (and she plays Esmeralda in the stage version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame). She's an absolute goddess, her rendition of "Someday" from THOND is truly heart-wrenching.

Fun fact with Frolllo singing Hellfire. Right after he sang it, the door opened with some sort of heavenly light and all the hellish glow around him just disappeared. God was using the guard as a mouthpiece. God was basically saying "she doesn't belong to you" . That was his last chance at redemption, but Frollo answered "get out you idiot". And he sealed his fate

Frollo is a chilling reminder of people in power in real life, who try and justify their heinous actions as righteous.
