Here’s why Esmeralda chose Phoebus over Quasimodo!Quasimodo saw Esmeralda as the Sun and Heaven and Frollo saw her as the fires of hell!Phoebus just saw and treated her like a normal person which is what she always wanted!

However, she gets framed for Phoebus' murder and he leaves her high and dry to her fate. She is captured by the guards and hanged. Quasi sees this from the cathedral and ends up staying at her tomb until he crumbles to dust when some explorers find them.

The thing is Frollo didn’t love or have feelings for Esmeralda, he was just lusting immensely for her and blaming it on her “witchcraft” (classic patriarchy) because he views himself as a pure and holy man who wouldn’t sin, the hooded figures in “hellfire” are saying “mea culpa, mea maxima culpa” which is a praying for when you ask for forgiveness of sin, it means in latin “through my fault, through my most grievous fault”, he refuses to accept that he’s corrupt and sinful and the hooded figures around him are his obsession with trying to justify it and being holy accusing him of sinning, his own lunacy and madness (that is seen again during his death scene when he sees the devil roaring at him as he falls to his death, bringing him to hell) Frollo is definitely one of my favorite villains Hellfire plays right after Heaven’s Light to contrast the different effect Esmeralda had on Quasimodo and Frollo Frollo looks tired the next day because it’s implied that he spent the last night... Well... Having some impure thoughts I also love Esmeralda’s God Help the Outcasts because she “isn’t supposed to be praying because she’s a gipsy” but she’s the most selfless of all the people praying there, while all the Christians at the church are praying for material and personal gain, all she asks for is help to all of the people who are also oppressed and doing even worse than her She is shown walking in the opposite direction of the other praying people to simbolize that contrast Also, the parts that make me cry the most are : “Yes I know I'm just an outcast I shouldn't speak to you Still I see your face and wonder Were you once an outcast too?” (Esmeralda, you have no idea...) “God help the outcasts Or nobody will” And also : “I thought we all were the Children of God” Esmeralda is incredible and should honestly be a Disney Princess because she’s an amazing model for young girls

I love this film, it’s a beloved Disney Renaissance film imo. Next to the Black Cauldron, this one has a reputation of having dark and mature elements woven into the story. Claude Frollo is one of the most despicable villains in Disney infamy, real talk. Even though Esmerelda isn’t a Princess, she’s a good female figure. Not only this film’s animation is amazing, but the songs are wonderful too. Hunchback of Notre Dame is definitely in my top ten list of Disney faves. Great reaction, Cody!

I know you wanted Quasimodo to let Frollo fall at the end. But remember the beginning of the movie. Frollo almost killed him the exact same way, letting him fall into the well as a baby. This scene shows the difference between them. Frollo, who thought himself a pure good man, WANTED to let an innocent child fall into his death, but he was stopped. Quasimodo, who believed his whole life that he was a monster, had the chance to let Frollo fall, the very man who killed his mother and countless others. Basically his life depended on it. And still, he decided not to. This scene is the strongest answer to the question at the beginning: "Who is the monster and who is the man?"

Also in the original book, She was afraid of Quasimodo for the way he looked and yet he loved her still. Frollo managed to kill her and years later when someone dig up her grave, he noticed another skeletton hugging her. That was Quasimodo. He could not handle life without her, so he crawled inside her grave and hugged her until he died.

Honestly I didn’t care for the Victor Hugo novel that much and I found it kinda boring. Esmeralda and Quasimodo aren’t that likeable in the book and American stage show so when they died I wasn’t sad whatsoever. I also think Frollo in the book and stage show is the show was kinda lame and I’m sick of sympathetic villains in general. Frollo in the movie did believe what he did was right but that doesn’t mean you have to make him sympathetic. Frollo is just the wrong Disney villain to make sympathetic. Scar from The Lion King has more potential to work as a sympathetic villain than Frollo does. I also think Frollo works better as a judge/corrupt politician rather because they have power. Priests have no power whatsoever. While I like Patrick Page’s performance but I didn’t like the portrayal. Disney made a Berlin stage musical that ran from 1999-2002 and I think it’s better than the movie, show and Hugo novel combined. Esmeralda does die in the this version but given that she’s more likable in this version her death is far more impactful. They did keep the Gargoyles, but they toned their humor and made them imaginary. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qoRsxa9vgbXRcZc.html

One of Disney's darkest animated films since The Black Cauldron of 1985. They tie in terms of not just their dark nature, but with so many adult themes and situations. It still surprises me that Hunchback managed to still catch a G rating versus the PG rating The Black Cauldron got. And Disney at the time feared that's what cost them as analysts believed it lost their target audience which were young kids (i.e. a PG-rated animated film doesn't sell).

The stage production of this musical is phenomenal! The added songs are great and they made it better in so many ways (Believe it or not) though, the ending is much darker. But I think the more grounded and realistic take makes up for it. And they removed the annoying gargoyles, and made them the narrator through song instead. I cried the whole show through 😅 Mostly because the choir and music in general was that good! 🙏😍 But this one is also really good, I just personally prefer the stage production.

  • @MovieEnforcer

Honestly I found the American stage production to be overrated. Mainly because I didn’t like the Victor Hugo novel all that much. Esmeralda and Quasimodo weren’t that likable in the book or the American stage production so when they died I wasn’t sad not in the slightest and the chorus got on my nerves and I hated how they narrated every single thing. Disney did stage show in Berlin back in the late 1990s/early 2000s and I think is even better than the movie. This is one is a bit closer to the movie but does borrow elements from the Victor Hugo novel and is much darker in tone. Esmeralda’s death is handled so much better this than it was in the novel. I actually cried this time because she was a likable character just like she was in the movie. Given that she’s not the likable the American stage musical I just didn’t care that she died. They did keep the Gargoyles from the movie but they’re imaginary and they don’t have the over the top personality like the do in the movie. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qoRsxa9vgbXRcZc.html
