The Holy Grail of EVP - Panasonic DR60

The Panasonic RR-DR60 IC audio recorder was released in 1998 as one of the first digital Dictaphones. The ghost-hunting community quickly adopted the Panasonic RR-DR60 IC audio recorder as a new, compact tool for their attempts to hear spirits - a replacement for the standard analog cassette recorders.
The sound quality was poor, but ghost hunters began reporting mysterious voices showing up, captured when no other living person was around. Over the years, the DR60 has gained somewhat of a legendary status with die-hard paranormal enthusiasts who claim this model - and only this particular model - is the best device for capturing spirit voices. In this episode, I take a deep dive into what makes this recorder work, and demonstrate not only the extremely poor sound quality, but also where these “voices” are coming from (Spoiler Alert - it’s not ghosts).

Exactly what I was hoping to find. I kept trying to theorize a plausible explanation as to why the heck the DR60 clips always sound like they're recorded on extremely recycled tape cassettes while not using tapes, and this solves the mystery. Thanks!

I love this guy! This is a very informative video and I can't wait to refer this video in the comment section on so many fake paranormal channels. I can't tell you how many so-called ghost hunting channels that had me completely fooled only to come to the realization several videos later that they were staging content. It felt like a good hard punch in the stomach! So I have come to deplore these "para faker's" and enjoy watching channels that expose them. And most of the faker's I have found use these DR-60's and brag about them, so awesome work Kenny, u-the-man!!!

Seminar room: from "Hey, any ghosts here" to "Alright, that should do it" the recording was 13 seconds, the playback it was only 7 seconds (from 6:42 to 7:20). Home: From "here" to "alright" recording is 24 seconds, playback is 10 seconds. You can see on the recorder screen he says "here" when the counter is at 5 seconds and at "alright" the counter is at 15 seconds, that's a 10 second playback of 24 seconds of recording. Library: Same thing, playback is much shorter. Why the discrepancy? I don't care either way, it 's simply what I noticed right off the bat.

This was a great analysis! I do field recording of live music (think Grateful Dead's tapers' section). In the '90s, DAT (digital audio tape) was the standard for high-end recording because solid-state storage (compact flash or SD cards) simply wasn't up to snuff at the time. There wasn't enough space on them, and the access times for writing to them was too slow. DAT, which used removable media, was essentially unlimited: as long as you had tape, you could record as long as you wanted. CD-quality recordings (16-bit at a 44.1 kHz sample rate) were the norm on 90-meter length tapes. Sony DAT recorders were subject to what we called "digifarts" which were sampling errors that sounded like farts. We never mistook them for voices. I think the fact that such a low-fidelity recorder is picking up interference which is then presented as voices From Beyond is pretty revealing. I'd be more impressed with CD or better quality recordings of things that actually sound like voices, rather than interference. I also noticed that some of the EVP voices sound a bit like you, Kenny.

Modern audio and video compression algorithms work similarly. What you hear is a mathematical compression and re-expansion of the original sound. For most of the algorithms in use (including KZread), that process is "lossy", meaning the sound you get out is not exactly the sound you get in.

I have not found any device that worked. There is no gadget that has been shown to detect/communicate/capture ghosts. The more I learned about each device (components, operation, etc.), the more I found none of them could accomplish the paranormal claims they were making. I suggest a notebook (for detailed notes), a camera (to document the area, objects, people, etc.), and a video camera to record sound and images. I don't recommend spending any money on gadgets marketed directly to ghost hunters - they're just not worth the money.

I haven't finished the video yet, but wanted to comment that what Kenny is recording does not always match what is repeated on the machine. In the CFI library he said he was putting down the recorder and not touching it. But the recorder repeated some noise instead. And also the recording was shorter than the time Kenny was actually recording. I'm assuming that when I watch the rest of the video this will be explained?

  • @s_87

It can be set to only record when a noise is detected. That's the explanation for why the recordings are shorter than what was originally recorded. It removes all the pointless silence, so that's why the resulting file is shorter.

No 1:1 playback pretty much undermines its purpose as tool for gathering evidence, doesnt it?

Very interesting look at how digital recorders worked back in the 90s. I figured they just digitize the audio and store in memory as an audio file then stream the digital data through a DAC to be played. This explains why a lot of these lossy voice only recorders sound the way they do because music sounds super terrible and scrambled up on them and I guess the ones that can play back music and have it sound like music and not a scrambled mess. How does the newer model recorder that you have handle music?

As I was watching before the reveal, the first thing that came to mind was aliasing into what was clearly by its presentation a highly band-limited range. Another thing I noticed was that the length of the silent parts of the recording were noticably shorter than the 20 seconds or so you paused speaking. Then I learned that the mic is voice activated. So I think you are correct, that it's recording background noise. But another factor may be at play. My instinct is to attribute that noise to automatic gain control implemented in the mic. Since there's no voice the gain is likely maxed out and it's picking up air movement sounds, amplifying them and recording them. It then decides it's not speech and stops recording. And since the air movement is variable, we hear these recordings in spurts. And they may be aliased so that their apparent frequencies are lower than their actual frequencies (growling) and vary with the minor changes in intensity of the air noise. Regardless of their source, all these factors exist for one reason. From low sample frequency to CELP coding (low size for each sample) to the voice activation, it's all to maximize recording time for a limited amount of memory, which was a cost limitation back then far more so than it is today. So the irony is that the design choices they made to squeeze every last bit of cost out of this device yield the very attributes that are responsible for the $5000 price tag of today, thanks purely to the human imagination.

Hi! Only one suggestion. As previously done with voice recorders, placing them into a faraday box to show that no voices were picked up during sessions has been successful in the past, so I would like to see you run this inside the faraday box without outside interference so that we can eliminate outside noise and maybe find that those sounds are coming from hardware or encoding/low quality. If the sounds still appear in a pattern like manner while inside a faraday box, I think it would end any debate about it picking up a "ghost frequency". Just a thought. Otherwise, great video!

The radio experiment wouldn't be that hard to put together honestly. Say you have 50 clearcut radio stations. 50 radios, each one dialed in to a unique station, have one normal spirit box, hook all of them up to a standard music studio mixing board, run the output of the mixing board into your laptop. Use FL studio or another DAW on your laptop to record and monitor all of the tracks seperately and the DAW timestamps each track automatically. Then all you need is to switch on all the radio's + spirit box at the exact same time, plug them into a singular power strip with an on/off switch. All you need to do before starting is dial in the sweep of the spirit box to start on the first radio station you set your first radio to. BAM! Donzo. If you wanna get even better results you could add AI voice cancellation to your spirit box track or somethin' but I don't know how well that would work ^^

Thanks for the deep dive on this overhyped and overused outdated piece of equipment. Full disclosure, as a paranormal enthusiast, I do utilize an Olympus voice recorder. I don't get scratchy static garbage like this. I've gotten very intelligible words. When I do my recordings, like you, I put it down so I am not maybe touching the microphone causing an "EVP". It's on a table, or chair, or bed, somewhere we are not touching it. And if I hear something, I play it for my wife and she heard the same thing without me "nudging" her into hearing by telling her what I think I heard. Very disappointed to see Ami and Adam using it. Zak is always using weird $h1+ so I get why he would use it to interpret his own EVP leanings into a screeeeechssffsxstchxcapsp noise. Would never use one of these, mainly because the prices on auction sites are ridiculous, and it's the first of it's kind recorder so it has some flaws and issues...and picking up demons is not one of them 😀

The last thing one should ever want is a flaw in their equipment to cause contamination and invalidate the investigation. There is enough realized and potential contaminates to do that without having to worry about it coming from our very own equipment.

I have heard recorded replies that others have captured with it though that are so clear they sound like a voice coming through a phone so obviously it does work. Most responses with the DR though are very hard to hear even for someone like myself that has years of experience hearing evp. If you aren’t a frequent ghost hunter you don’t have a connection to spirit so you are far less likely to get replies. To do a fair test you really need to let someone who has spirit around them test the device. Nevertheless I really enjoyed your well thought out discussion regarding the DR. Wish I owned one.

Cops,Vampires AND ghosts need a friendly common on in y’all😇 love your feed, but I secretly would like to see a real ghost in a house less than 150 years old, cave perhaps👍 maybe in a new build, maybe we can still hear the walls record of the cursing and screaming of the carpenter hitting his/her thumb with a hammer.

You don't have to be in a haunted location to do spirit communication. Spirits are everywhere. Lots of dr60 responses are undeniably real responses. Did you even try to slow down your response and listen back to them with headphones? You just don't want to believe and that's fine but it does work as well as other ghost hunting equipment or ITC methods.

Priced way too high for a recorder that picks up way too much internal noise and all you hear is "rumble rumble rumble". Hard pass for serious research!

Well they're theorys and can't be used as an explanation. It surely wouldn't be the only excisting model with that kind of technology, that converted silence into words. The library idea would be proved if you show something similar, or if you make a computer program that can make these phenomenons.

it depends. but the notion of "i can't readily explain this, so ipso facto it's a ghost" is not a convincing argument.

The latest documentary of this conducted by scientists and magicians is very interesting. They ruled out all fraudulent activity. I’m not sure what’s going on but have witnessed things with my own eyes that science cannot explain or any skeptic. I’d be exactly the same had I not had my own experiences.
