Aside from the R32, and the retired R38 for that matter, the R62/62A is easily my favorite car. Like the R32, everything about just feels right. The beltline ribbing, the head and tail light placement, the sheen of the stainless, its exactly what a NY subway car should look like. If it was up to me they'd push the replacements another 20 years into the future and just give these a modern refurb with digital enhancements, new seating, etc. When clean of grime these look every bit as good now as the day they were new. Interesting note about Budd bidding on this order. Had they gotten it they just might still be in business today. Something to think about.

Not completely sure about the Budd thing, as they proposed using untested motors, which ultimately failed on the retired R44 fleet. For the R62/A's, I wouldn't personally let these cars stay in service for another 20+ years (mainly because of old age by that time - they'd basically be the new R32/R42/R46's), however, I think the current timeframe for replacement is perfect, with these cars nearing 40 years in service. By the time they are replaced, they will be about 45-48, which leaves much time to still ride them, and railfan them.

I can remember watching on the news when the R62 was first announced. There was a mockup of the interior which Mayor Koch toured, and they pointed out all of the features that would make these vandal resistant: stainless walls, ceramic coated ceilings. I was very upset that the individual straps were being replaced with poles.

I ALSO SUPERVISED THE 1ST R62 WITH #4 TRAIN OPERATING IN PASSENGER SERVICE. MAYOR KOCH GOT ON AT WOODLAWN & RODE IN THE CAB WITH THE T/O & ME &HIS STAFF. WE WERE SQUEEZED LIKE SARDINES UNTIL HE GOT OFF AT GRAND CENTRAL STATION. IT WAS AN HISTORIC MOMENT WITH 1ST NEW TRAINS FOR IRT.

Love all of these Series/Ideas you're coming up with. You should do a Spin-Off of your current "Least Used Stations" Series Called: "Abandoned/Ghost Stations". And Maybe a "Busiest Stations" Series too.

Glad you like the new series ideas I'm coming up with! I am trying to diversify the content on my channel, and have it appeal to a broader audience. Also, about the Spin-Off series ideas, thanks for the new ideas. I'll definitely consider doing the Ghost Stations videos. And about 'Busiest Stations'... already on my list, although, named "Most Used Stations" as of now. I am also considering a Station Overview series, where I go to some of the most interesting stations in the city, and create video tours for them.

I had the honor of being the motor instructor supervising the movement of an R62 train from mosholu yard to woodlawn station with a handbrake still applied. Even though the train operator did a rolling test to make sure all the wheels rolled free, and it did roll free, a hand brake was applied right in his cab. The handbrake light was switched from the air brake side on the right to the left side in the cab. I was speaking to him and there were Japanese engineers trying to speak to us, so the train operator was distracted. The Japanese engineers checked the wheels and there was no damage. I have more stories about R62s and other trains since I operated all of the trains in the museum but the gate cars, I also operated Q cars.

I WORKED WITH JAPANESE TECH ON R62 AS TRAIN SERVICE SUPERVISOR IN MOSHOLU YARD. I WAS ON A TEST R62 TRAIN FROM WOODLAWN TO UTICA AVE. THE T/O HAD TO STOP IN EVERY STATION & C/R HAD TO OPEN DOORS TO TEST TRAIN. THERE WERE TEN POLICE OFFICERS, ONE IN EACH CAR TO ENSURE NO ONE GOT ON THE TRAIN. EVERYTHING WAS OK & WHEN WE GOT TO WOODLAWN, THE POLICE GOT OFF & LEFT. AS THE R62 WAS LEAVING WOODLAWN, A TEENAGER HAD A MARKER PEN PRESSED AGAINST THE TRAIN AS IT LEFT. I TOLD THE DISPATCHER TO CALL THE SHOP & TELL THEM THEIR NEW TRAIN, NOT IN SERVICE YET, HAD GRAFFITI ON EVERY CAR. RETIRED TSS

Love this clip. I grew up living in Bronx and I always loved riding the R62 (4), I remember seeing them in Concourse Yard, and they were so clean and good looking, eventually as I was back in forth I started growing up with the (3) line (which is now my home line) I remember seeing the R62A's run on that line when it ran as a 9 car line, and I remember the R62's on the (1) they was in great shape and looked good on that line so that was that. I do miss the R62A's on the (3) as it feels and looks better on that line the (1) took the (3) sets and as you can see they aren't in the somewhat best conditions but it's all good but I'll definitely miss them when they get taken out of service those trains are very unique and haul butt cheeks along 7th Ave and I can't forget they are OK on the (6) line as well but yeah.

I remember when the R62 cars were new and assigned to the 4 line to replace life expired R12/14/15 cars. It was a treat to ride them as I did from Atlantic Ave. to downtown Manhattan as they had air conditioning which previously did not exist on the IRT. The only thing that I didn't like on those cars is the seats which were designed for Japanese sized rear ends.

Actually at first the R62/As were singles units as well in 1983 so all trains cars had functional half width cabs at either end and it was the only time the R62s had the railfan window it was in 1991-1992 that these were linked into 5 cars sets with fill width cabs, but the half width cabs still remained

Yes, this is correct. They all were delivered as singles and the conversion of the KHI R-62 fleet to five car units started somewhere around 1989 - 90. At that time my assignment was "work train transfer". When the first conversion was done 1301 - 1305, I was sent to 207th yard to retrieve and return it to Moshulu yard. Upon completion of the R-62 conversion, the R-62A railcars were then likewise linked into five car units.

I was raised in eny till 2011-2012 where my home line was the 3 4 and l lines. I grew up with those R62s on the 3 line and sometimes on the 4. Well as like today I still take those lines because my school is near to the Rockaway Ave station on the 3 when I got to Manhattan or downtown Brooklyn after school but now like today I currently living near the j z a and c lines. Man I better hope I get a good line when I move because i might move anytime soon

As built, the R62/R62A fleets were single cars with half cabs. They were modified into 5 car units with full width cabs about 10 years after delivery.

I was raised in the Bronx and my homeline for 12 years was the 1. so I grew up with the R62As and they are definitely the best trains in the system

As a train Operator the R62A/R62's were my favorite to operate, it took more time to master but they are very responsive and it quickly distinguishes the good from the mediocre operators. The R62's are far more challenging to operate and they usually give new Operators fits.

They definitely know dam well they are supposed to have the Powder blue 🔵 and not Green 8. If they would of kept the 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line up running the R62AS could definitely replacing all the R12 R14s right now. Soona or later the R262/As is definitely gonna replacing all the R62AS R62S on the 1 3 6 S lines for CBTCS. I have a real spriital feeling that they are definitely gonna have the powder blue 🔵 8 Thrid Ave Elevated rolling signs on the 11 10 12 13 9 rolling signs im telling you.

I'm going to miss them when they are gone

6:50 Now, the 96th St Derailment on the (1) Line

My mom used them on IRT East side Flushing Line pre 2017-2018 and West Side Lines. Been on one in 2015 7 train Fifth Avenue Bryant Park to Grand Central terminal. Air conditioning vent is mounted underneath the passenger seats unlike the trains that were built after the 1990s have them on the roof top.

I'm not from New York but I'm also a big fan of these trains, the IRT is also my favourite division within the NYC Subway system so naturally I'm a fan of all IRT trains. Great video, can't wait for the next one (I subbed)!

Funny Story, as a kid, I used to be scared of the R40 Slants. It was like the slanted frontal design horrified me. In the present day, I'm glad to have at least ridden on them a couple of times before their retirement. I almost miss them. (Ok, ok, I do miss them)

I move from Staten Island to New Jersey in 1973 the year SIR began using R44 trains and 49 years they've still in service. I believe those were the last subway cars that were made in St. Louis

I remember when the 7th Ave trains had bage floors for the R62s back then and black for Lexington.

The R62s were great to operate but the R62As had a lot of problems. We in rapid transit operations could not understand it. They looked the same in all areas but did not operate the same. The R62s were great to operate and the R62A cars were bombs

One was Japanese built, and the other wasn't. Like comparing an early 80's Toyota to a Dodge.

they still have bench seating!! ran across it a few weeks ago on the 3 line. Really tripped me up. There's also some with random blue benches however those seem to not be like the ones shown in the video and more like a stopgap for damaged benches. That 3 with the bench style was the best ride :)

Also my opinion bench > bucket as it allows for more people to sit and less awkwardness about having to sit in between to seats for example. Provided it's not busy though, bucket does end up being slightly more comfortable.

While not mentioned in this video but it should be known that R62A #'s 1651-1660 were built by both Bombardier and Kawasaki. The latter built the car shells while the former finished the assembly of the units. It is why the builder's plate on these R62A's differ from the rest of the R62A's. Some units still have their original OEM, black on clear numbers.

@@MysticTransit Now you know. The Builder's Plate on 1651-1660 reads Barre, Vermont and La Pocatière, Quebec. The rest of the cars also includes Auburn, New York. History is repeating itself for Kawasaki. Like the incoming R211's, they are being delivered at a rate of 20 cars a month. The same applied for the R62 order. In 2023, all of the R62/A's would then outlive the cars they retired.

Wrong The R62A was BOMBARDIER only. Kawasaki didn't want to build the remaining cars under a separate order so it went to BOMBARDIER. They never had a plant in Auburn. It was always in Yonkers.

Our subway system unfortunately is not as long as yours, I’m not sure that it will be at that level anytime soon. I believe in NYC there are a total of 472 subway stations, versus 93 in LA. do you ever just sit at a subway station and watch the trains coming and going?

Despite them looking alike, the R62 and R62A fleets are incompatible with each other, due to the R62 using a Westinghouse Air Brake ME43 brake valve, and the R62A using a New York Air Brake Neutran 1 brake valve.

The R268 will come out in 2040. By the time the R268/as comes out the R342As would be on the 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line then.

Good video. However I was doing some research and found some interesting stuff. The R62A's are indeed not that reliable as i looked at the MDBF chart for the End of 2021 and as for the Old Tech trains they are less reliable than the R62's and R68's (Not R68A's). Also found out Westchester Yard abuses the hell out of them and same with 240th Street Yard (Not as much as Westchester tho). They were also not built as well too I heard. The R62's sees almost as much use as well btw since there are sets that run on 1 Train even on overnights. But only like 2 yet they dont breakdown as often as the R62A's. However now that you mentioned the Union Sq Wreck the 4 train had bad luck with the R62's I found out. Almost like a curse because of so many accidents: The Union Sq wreck when the train flew its ass into the station and turned itself into an Origami train, One was firebombed on the (4) at Fulton St, One had an insane crash with a work train at Fordham Rd on the (4) which retired most of the set and was coupled with the Union Sq Wreck survivors which now runs on the (1) and a Work train Rear ended an OOS R62 (4) in the Yard and made it an R62 Slant lmfao.

Yeah. That makes the #6 is very unique. It is not a true local train like the #1 Broadway local. And the #6 stops in Manhattan are further apart from each other creating a faster ride. 1: 59 66 72 79 86 6: 59 68 77 86. The #6 does not stop at 18 street. The Lexington Line was built later than the Broadway line, which does not uphold to a major street intersection pattern for a few of it stations. 106, not 110 is a major street on the east side. Lexington Avenue is also the smallest streets were a four trunk line is operated.

Most (6) Trains are fully local, but yeah, there are some peak Exp Trains on weekdays (unfortunately, not this week lol). The (1) has had some experiences of being an Exp though, when the (9) was still a thing.

@@MysticTransit The #6 is more like #7 as it runs a regularly peak stop service. There is anything on the #1 line that would allow such a service. But maybe one day a Special Express service if the demand ever exist in the future. However, it lack of Express platform and the local stations is where most of the traffic is But the #6 is in reverse making for a perfect peak express service. It local South Bronx stations are not heavily used and it runs very frequently because of it Manhattan service.

I'm not a big fan of the R62/A but its great to know more info about them. Also MTA should put shuttle yard stickers bc its werid to have the Lex,Bway,and Corona Yard stickers on the R62 shuttle units

I have only seen the R62 on the 2 line once in my whole life.

I have grew up with these cars since 1983 to 1987 of the R62/R62a cars, by 1983 by November at Woodlawn on the 4 train of the SILVER FOX R62 cars for the first time seeing and weeks later riding for the first time is like a fresh start even reminds of the R44/46 cars too, by 1985 R62a cars on the 6 train and 1 including the 3 train, that goes for the SHUTTLE of 42 St. l did not see a set of R62/ or 62A on the 7 Flushing line but l heard about it, there was a problem that the tube was too wide and are the 3rd generations of IRT cars as we all know too, 5th generations of IRT cars of R262 unacceptable including the 4th fleet too! To lack of problems!

The R44's & R46's railcars fleets from the 1970's were not manufactured by the Budd company. R44's were manufactured by St.Louis railcars company & R46's were manufactured by Pullman Standards.

The straight seat benches are better that gives passengers more comfort than bucket seats to avoid sitting on the edges, all cars of the remaining fleet must have straight bench seatings too, there better than high tech trains too, these cars of R62/62A cars are more solid and next R262 car equipment are going to have more issues!

My favorite trains. By the way, you forgot about R110 which comes in between R62 and R142

@@davidng2336 This timeline all hinges on when the MTA decides to award the R262 contract. Unlike the R62/A's and R142/A's , the R262 order is likely going to be given to just one car builder. I won't give my own timeline until the R262 order is awarded. When it is awarded, it will take 2-3 years to get the pilot set to arrive, an extra year for the testing, 3-5 years for the rest of the fleet to arrive.

If they would kept the 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line up by the time the R262/As comes to replace them on the 1 3 6 S lines for CBTCS they would of saved the R62AS to go on the 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line. To comment on mystic transit reply to subway dude. The slant R40s, while unique in design, I felt were potentially dangerous because I could not fully see the left side view from my operating cab. THE R32 CARS WERE THE ABSOLUTE BEST IN OPERATION AND ESPECIALLY BRAKING. A MOTORMAN COULD STOP AN R32 EVERY TIME AND A PASSENGER WOULD NEVER KOW THE TRAIN STOPPED; NOT EVEN THE SLIGHTEST BUMP. THEY WERE PERFECTION. ONLY THING NEEDED WAS AIR CONDITIONING. NO COMPLEXITY.

They were never my favorite cars. They were always sluggish. The red birds had better acceleration.

IMO, the R62's have the best acceleration out of all IRT cars (bar the R142A's).

I never liked the half-cabs of these cars .

R62 are single units

Padding on the seats is absolutely disgusting, Why would anyone think that would be a good idea?

Obviously TFL thinks it's a good idea, and continues going with that design in London. It works well, gives a nicer design to the seating, and is more comfortable. Before they retired, the MTA actually had padding on the seats of the New Flyer D60HF.

the R62 is my least favorite because it's such and gloomy and dim car and its lights are dim. The MTA needs to put the R142As on the 1,3 & 6 trains.

They definitely have to wait until the Brand New New R262/As comes to replace all the R62AS R62S on the 1 3 6 S lines for CBTCS. Until then the 6 Pelham line has to put up with the R62as back on the Pelham 6 line.

Exactly 100 percent right. They shouldn't have never taken down the 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line down at all because the R62AS would of definitely replacing all the R12 R14s on the 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line right now. The issue is they have the Green 8 signs instead of the powder blue 🔵 8.
