I do remember these having the most uncomfortable seats of any subway car. The new design included a lower beltline and taller windows all around, resulting in shorter seatbacks. It did introduce those big colorful route designations that would fill one front end window. You could read it from an entire platform length's distance.

The R40 slants entered service when I was in the 3rd grade back in March 1968. A kid in my class described the slanted ends by bending his hand down and I disbelieved him. Then a couple of months later while at Nathans in Coney Island, I spotted the R40s rounding the curve departing Stillwell Ave terminal.

When i was a kid, i really love the r40's. They're the best nyc subway train cars i've ever seen and existed. However, they're actually also the scariest looking trains i've ever seen. As a kid, i always imagined that the front of the r40 look like an evil face because of the windows, the skinny door and those anticlimbers things. To me, the windows look like a pair of mildly sinister eyes, the skinny door look like a long rectangular tiki nose and those anticlimbers things look like a pair of sharp pointy thorny cheeks. So there, these are my thoughts of the r40's.

The artist rendition was actually bolder than the R40 slant. This car was stunning back in 1968 when it was introduced on the F and then later on the E. It did not have a bullet, originally. It had a big F or E on it and the F was a magenta color, not orange like today, and the E was a lighter blue. What was also striking about it, beyond the slant, was how large the side windows were and the door's windows. The rebuild completely screwed it up with the standardized short window doors that looked terrible on these trains. The original slants also had a thin dark blue line on them, that also made them look unique. They totally made the R32 and R38 look obsolete, though some aspects of their interior weren't that different. The R42 M was more conservative looking. But it led to the look of the R44, R46, R68, R62 trains that lasted until the R143s came along. Most trains in the 60s had aqua blue interiors. The bland beige walls and black seats in the rebuild also were not an improvement. Some of the slants had a/c, some didn't.

I loved the original R40s, they came into use at a time I was riding them frequently when I and friends came to NYC from the suburbs. After leaving for college I spent less time on the subway, but after seven years out of NYC, My wife and I moved along the route of the Queens Blvd line used by the Es and Fs. The are 40As were very popular with us as our apartment had no central air and only one window unit in a bedroom. In the hot nights of the summer not having much money we would ride them into Manhattan and down to lower Manhattan where we would take the ferry to Staten Island and back. By then our apartment would have cooled down and we'd go home. It was not the best time to live in Rego Park as it was the time of the Son of Sam so we were always careful to wait for a crowd to exit the subway so we could all walk together. Lowey is also known for the the design of the GG! an incredible locomotive, as well as the Studebaker Avanti. Given your age these would be things your grandparents would remember.

I think the R40s can make a 4-car train by using both slant-ended cars as the end cars and the R40M/R42 be in the middle. 2022 edit: the R40s from the ToMM and the preserved R40M-R42 pair could work as a 4-car consist. But they might replace the metal rods that are in place on the said pairs with couplers. Consist: R40 slant (facing forwards) R40 flat (facing backwards) R42 (facing forwards) R40 slant (facing backwards) The consist is arranged like this so that the cabs aren’t in weird positions. Also, if they still have some R40s, R40Ms, and R42s. They could create an 8-10 car consist. Like some sort of special train like the ToMM and ToMC.

I rode the R40 slants when I was a kid. One problem was the seats. They were almost completely flat with no support for your buttocks, so on a tight curve, I would find myself sliding off the seat. The straight-ended R40s didn't have those flat seats, nor did any other subway cars past or present that I ever rode. You can google for pictures of the R40 slant interiors so you can see what I mean.

These are the most unique and infamous trains in the mta. Mainly because people get confused with mta and cta. @@TRRailfan R42s really are a modified/slightly updated R40M. Significant subway cars from the 60s are the R32s but just for longevity and not design, R40 slants, R44 (really a big deal when it first appeared at 75 feet and had an interior like no other subway before it and also much quieter than predecessors) and I think the R143s. The 68s are like R44s with silver walls and their own cabs in each car. The R160/R179 are modified R143s and even to some degree the R211s are modified/updated R143s. The A division I think the R62 and R142s are the significant ones in terms of making an impact in bringing in a new generation of cars for the A division.

Fyi Railfan the year is 1969 As the Modified R40 is the identical twin of the R42 was in service by 1970 as a youth riding them in 1975 on LL line used see a lot of them on the A AA B CC D E EE F GG M QJ QB RR which had wider end doors to the narrowed R40 and the Mod R40 some transit buff people use to call them the three stooges 😊🎉 my opinion the R40s were super fast going across The Rockaways inlet

R40 slant became very rusty like the whole body between 2008-2009 that's why it retired. Same goes to R38. Btw why did the R40M retire? they weren't rusty or were they? 🤔
