The History of Sampling in Video Game Music

Ойындар

What's the one thing that Malcolm X, Adam West's Batman, and a common work printer all have in common? You can hear all of them in various Sonic the Hedgehog songs - and I can prove it.
This video is an in-depth exploration of music sampling in video games, covering its long history, showcasing the sheer range of samples used in gaming, and the unique origins behind some of the most iconic samples heard in video game music. Even if you think you know all there is to know about sampling in gaming, there might still be a few surprises in store for you here...
A good pair of headphones is highly recommended for this video!

    Hey everyone, it turns out that despite my best efforts in researching this video, a few errors still slipped into the final upload. In the event any other mistakes or updates related to the video come up, I'm leaving a pinned comment here with any relevant information. 09:32 - Ollie King did NOT release on the original Xbox; it was exclusive to arcades, albeit on arcade hardware that was directly based on the Xbox's hardware. While it's possible to play Ollie King on a modded 128MB Xbox, Sega never released the game outside of arcades. This was something I was supposed to fix before the final export that fell to the wayside during the final touch-ups. 12:20 - While I couldn't find it prior to finishing the video, the source of the "Forever" whisper isn't actually a mystery: it can be found on Voice Spectral II, tucked away in the "WHISPERS" section of Partition C. Thanks to @maufromtheplanetearth9722 for pointing this one out! 20:52 - It turns out that the sample heard in Egg Emperor doesn't come from Datafile 2; it actually comes from Chemical Beats, a later Zero-G release. The sample in question is "104FXDRLP0" (104BDEMO). The two samples heard in Datafile and Chemical Beats are extremely similar, but there's a small staccato drum section in the Chemical Beats sample not present in the Datafile sample, which can still be heard in Egg Emperor. Other games likely use the Datafile sample, but Sonic Heroes isn't one of them. 01:30 - Just to clarify, the "bottom text" bit in the "Sampling Popularization" box was actually intentional: it's just a silly joke, since I boxed myself in with the editing format there and didn't wanna leave that space beneath the years blank. There're a few layering errors and typos that snuck into the video, but this one ain't one of them.

    Don't worry too much on this stuff, I can tell that the video is very well polished and you actually put effort in research despite some minor errors. Also you're awesome for using the Ridge Racer Type 4 UI as a way to present the video, a really nice touch.

    Just a nitpick, the "i can't hear you" "i can't see you" wasn't the only time the Xeno series had a connection with Sonic. The Riki theme also appears on a Sonic Free Riders song

    This wasn't really much of a "History of" more like a brief intro then a select few examples, but I really liked this video, and hope in the future you will do more videos on iconic sample packs which shaped gaming soundtracks. There could be room to classify them better, like "Gaming Sounds of the Early 2000's", just a suggestion, I would watch them all if they were similar format and titled appropriately. Nice job and thanks for making it.

    16:18 That's also the sample used in the Woodfall Temple in Majora's Mask I didn't bother to look it up to check but it obviously is. Also, mentioning OMORI and not mentioning Sprout Mole Village, the song almost entirely made out of the Toad "bup" sound? What a travesty. 7:08 I also know this song was used in like 50 different games, including as a vocal backing for an orchestral boss battle theme of some JRPG I forgot the name of lmao This is definitely an infinite rabbit hole to an extent. "To the Batmobile. Let's Go!" I have a theory as to why the 60's Batman show (including this facsimile) was so popular for sampling in the 90's, not just in VGM, but Goa Trance. This show did not get a home video release until 2014, due in part to the legal conflicts between Warner, who had owned the characters of DC since '69, and Fox, the show's original broadcaster. This meant that any sampling of it was not strictly enforced due to the conflicting rights. My favourite example is from Juno Reactor's 'Pistolero,' which quotes Zelda's line: "I hate robbing banks."

    I fell down a small rabbit hole with that one track from a Persona anime that used a sample from the Masterbits Rhapsody Vocals CD, which went memetic for how absurdly awkward and silly it sounded in practice. He's in the house like carpet, etc. etc. I got curious about it, but it seems like a lot of information about masterbits and their libraries seems to have sort of eroded. Their website is defunct and only accessible via the wayback machine, and they don't have a wikipedia page or anything like that it seems either. I feel like tou can't help but be a little saddened by that, especially when you realize just how prevalent their work was across so many great soundtracks. Also, MELTY BLOOD MENTIONED!!!!!

    This video was so awesome! When I read the title, I assumed it was on how "regular" musicians sample video game music for their songs, but I didn't know that game composers also draw so much from samples. As soon as you played that "Leena Improv" sample, I immediately recognized the NLA Day theme, haha

    Dude, the art of sampling is so freaking cool! It was great to see how games both new and old used sampling for their soundtracks! Honestly reminded me of a time where I thought the vocalist in the song "Iwatodai Dorm" (from Persona 3) was Lotus Juice (one of the main vocalists). It was actually a rap sample from "Hallelujah" by Best Service, and it always confused me on why they did that haha! Thanks for the great video! ヾ(≧▽≦*)o

    I've always loved sound sampling, but I never knew that it was THIS deep. Probably the most mind blowing one for me is the Majora's Mask one. Also, "Here We Are" In Undertale also uses the same samples as "Amalgam". By the way, RelaxAlax made video about musicians using video games samples in their work. I'd highly recommend it as there's some crazy stuff in there. One of the songs he shows used Darkness of the Unknown from KH2 in it.

    One of the first times i noticed "sampling" in a video game was for Golden Axe (1989, Arcade). Wasnt so much for the soundtrack as for sound fx. There are a couple of death screams lifted from Conan the Barbarian (which is fitting the theme), but a weirder one is the "villager being attacked by orcs" scream... which is taken from American Werewolf in London (1981).. its the scene where the woman who runs the porno theater box office is screaming for help about a "mad dog" in the theater.

    9:58 it's my understanding that Sega had an approved sample library and Malcolm X's speech was just kinda in there (on one of their sample CDs as indicated in the video), not so much that Hideki Naganuma went out of his way to sample him. iirc there's another game from Sega that samples a different part of that speech but I'm too lazy to look it up rn

  • @TheRealFolkBlues

    @TheRealFolkBlues

    4 ай бұрын

    Oh, I'm pretty sure Naganuma's sampling of the Malcolm X speech was more of a thing that just kinda happened rather than him knowingly choosing that speech to sample. It's just that he's used so many samples in his other works that it's not surprising he's sampled public activism speeches on more than one occasion.

  • @M4R14NO94

    @M4R14NO94

    Not a Naganuma example but it reminds me of one of the songs on Sega Touring Car Championship ("Are U Wake Up?") sampling a MLK speech, though it's an interesting case since it's a licensed song rather than an in-house Sega composition (shoutouts to dat AVEX TRAX license). At the same time, that same speech also ended up getting sampled on one of the menu songs on WCW Backstage Assault, of all things, so I imagine it probably ended up on one of these sample CDs too and happened to get used by the respective composers. @@TheRealFolkBlues
