In the German Bundesliga, the classic example was Werder Bremen, first with Otto Rehhagel and then with Thomas Schaaf. Rehhagel turned them into the most successful German team at that time, winning championships, cups and the Cup Winners‘ Cup. After he left, they spent some years in the wilderness until they tried it with their former player Thomas Schaaf. He had not much experience in coaching and started almost as an interim solution at first, and then went on to win them the double (their last ever championship so far), plus led them to the Champions League regularly. After he was sacked, the club struggled again and eventually got relegated.

Comprehensive and very interesting. This is the first time I have heard anyone actually say that the team Ferguson left when he retired was a relatively poor one despite winning the league. This was obvious at the time and was the start of United’s decline. It will be interesting to see what happens at Liverpool after Klopp. Obviously the choice of replacement manager will be crucial but at least he is leaving behind not only a good team but a good squad and a good academy set up with promising young players. One factor which seems to be common not just in football but in business and even politics is that where the person in charge has effectively controlled everything their departure is like taking the engine out of a car whereas where a manager has always been part of a team and there is some continuity in the club the change is less traumatic. Think Ferguson and Shankley. Whoever goes to Liverpool won’t compete with the personality that Klopp is but needs to make use of the talent there rather than setting out to change things to suit their own ego.

Fergy made sure he couldn’t get replaced as he run the team down and bought donkeys that he paid ridiculous money for. Shankly had his replacement in his coaching position and he knew it so it was a seamless swap paisleydid the same a fagan knew he was a short term boss waiting for Dalglish to stop playing. The problem happened with Hillsborough eventually forcing Kenny out with his replacement not in place yet ending the Liverpool dominance. The only English team to do this. Maybe they will again. And Matt busby played and captain Liverpool can you see what’s happened here

I dont understand all the love for Jurgen Flopp. The guy has managed liverpool for 9 years and has lost the premier league 8 times out of those 9. His best player has been salah, a player he didnt want, and he managed to single handedly turn Van Dijk from consistently world class to a player that could blunder a game at any moment. To me, these facts dont make Flopp an icon, they make him a failure.

During those 9 years his points tally was consistently mega high, topped only by City’s record-breaking tally. How could you beat an endless flux of middle-east money? You can’t, but Klopp gave it a good go. Also you mustn’t forget the state Liverpool were in before he took over. They were proper rubbish.
