Love it, took me back to being a kid in the arcades and on the SNES & MegaDrive/Sega Genesis. Amazing times, I always wanted too play the plug and play versio but never got to. My main childhood games were 1 ,2 & 3. I loved the Sega Saturn version of ultimate MK3. I was also working in a local SEGA WORLD back then and was actually told to unlock Smoke which was not available by the dip switch settings, which means I had to put it in manually in the UK. arcade. that was because more characters, more players. Yet everything was heard was in the arcades, classrooms, and what you read in video games magazines. I did actually buy a Mortal Kombat 2 game guide, which was rare back in the UK in the 90s. I actually bought a Mortal Kombat 2 and later a MK3 machines. MK2 has taken a fair bit of maintenance. Ultimate MK3 plays amazing. I have maintained them well. I have replaced all buttons and sticks with Sanwa working very well This was way before 1-UP cabinets, so it was very expensive. To me still worth it having these original arcade versions it was great and always a conversation starter. Everyone knows it, some have never played it, but are relaxed enough to play it. Bringing people together!

The MK series is just damn good, my favorite 2D game in the series however still has to be MK: Trilogy on the PlayStation, I love how on certain characters you could even play older versions of them. Plus of course it put back in Baraka’s spinning blade attack. And Richard Divizio and Daniel Pesina are two cool guys, I met them at our local convention got them to sign my Genesis copy of MK 1, and had pics taken with them, including me taking a nut cracker, and Kano “ripping out my heart.” Plus I got to spend time with them afterwards and eat some pizza and drink some beers with them along with playing them in the arcade version of MK2, since I was a VIP at the convention.

The Genesis version was rushed which is part of the reason for the difference in sprite quality. Not sure about the missing audio samples but modders have updated it and releases the "Arcade Edition" as a rom. Others have since put the rom on a reproduction carts and you can but it online to play on your Genesis hardware. Much closer to the arcade for graphics and the sound samples are now there too. It's a great upgrade.

Highly highly highly recommend Enter the Dragon for any old school MK fan who may have not seen it yet. It's probably Bruce Lee's best movie, and the first MK game, especially the movie, pretty much lifted all of its plot right from Enter the Dragon. Most would have already seen Bloodsport thanks to 1990s TBS and TNT.

I'm a huge SF2 fan from back in the day and have played very limited mortal Kombat even though I saw it in the arcade, been giving it a go on the SNES lately and still suck at it although I'm enjoying it. The only thing I don't like is that the stages change when you continue instead of each character having their own unique stage like SF2

I thought Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 were decent games when they were new. However, I was definitely a Street Fighter player growing up. I absolutely despised Mortal Kombat 3. I didn't like the run feature or the combos. It always felt like they were trying to follow in Killer Instinct's path (I loved the first one). This was a very informative video! Thank you for making it. Fun Fact- Did you know Mortal Kombat almost became a TG-16 exclusive?! The developers wanted to do it but Nec/Hudson refused to fork out royalties on an untested game. What an absolute blunder that was. That could have been the killer app the TG-16 needed to really put it on the map. I would have got one just for MK.

let's all be honest here, MK2 was clearly the best game of the trilogy. MK1 was trying to prove itself but the gameplay was lacking but it did have the raw brutality to get attention. mk3 tried to change it up with the run button but I feel like the gameplay was severely diluted. MK2 is hands down the best game

I created that in Gimp for the bezel. I originally made it for Paul Eicher's upcoming Mortal Kombat Plus, where Reptile will have a portrait appear in the center of the character select screen to be a secret playable character like robot Smoke was in MK3. But Paul went with another artist's Reptile portrait with a moon background. (I still like mine better).
