"A Song of Ice and Fire (commonly abbreviated as ASoIaF) is an ongoing series of epic fantasy novels by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. Martin began writing the series in 1991 and the first volume was published in 1996.
The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily on a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos. Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses others are introduced, such as the cold and menacing supernatural Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East, both thought to be extinct by the humans of the story. There are three principal story lines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros among several competing families; the rising threat of the Others, who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war fifteen years before, to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, the three story lines become increasingly interwoven and dependent upon each other."
"Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, the first of which is A Game of Thrones. Set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, Game of Thrones has a large ensemble cast and follows several story arcs throughout the course of the show. The first major arc concerns the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros through a web of political conflicts among the noble families either vying to claim the throne or fighting for independence from whoever sits on it. A second focuses on the last descendant of the realm's deposed ruling dynasty, who has been exiled to Essos and is plotting to return and reclaim the throne. The third follows the Night's Watch, a military order defending the realm against threats from beyond Westeros's northern border."

    I always find it a little offputting though when there are these fictional medievil worlds that somehow have thousands of years of history without seeming to have progressed at all technologically. In the real world the 'medieval' period was only a couple hundreds years give or take before we had cannons and basic firearms. How has Westeros existed without any kinds of advancements at all for thousands of years, fantasy or no.

And thats without magic, sorcery, spells, White Walkers and firebreathing dragons that complicate things :P Remember, the way we envision progress nowadays is a very industrial-era way of thinking. Ofc people wanted to improve their societies back then but the idea of "progress" as we know it was a very slow trickle of improvements over time not broad sweeping changes. Also, theres plenty of reasons why progress could be slowed. Wars, political turmoil, disease, famine, invasions, natural disasters etc. Im also sure that the ASOIAF world did see progress during the time of the Valyrian Freehold but after their collapse things regressed. And we havent even discussed how technological progress could be further hampered by stuff like magic and dragons....

    I should be writing a 10-page history essay right now. Instead I'm binge-watching a fun new ASOIAF channel. I wonder if my professor would accept an essay about the fantastical history of a certain house Frey... I mean, the whole story of asoiaf is essentially the war of roses, so it's basically history, right?? Jokes aside, great video and interesting topic. So many asoiaf channels focus on the histories of Targaryens and Starks (which are also fun ofc!) so it's refreshing to hear about other houses too, especially a house that doesn't get much love from the fandom.

A thought: I like how in the "where -was Gondor when Westfold fell- were the Velaryons/Hightowers during X" videos you approached the family history through a certain event. @@sou713 No he means the south. Casterly Rock and Lannisport correspond with Dublin, Oldtown is roughly around the Belfast area, the Vale is the Munster area and the Stormlands are Connaught. It's the Vale and the Stormlands which are the most obvious to me. The North is modelled extremely roughly off of Great Britain with Bear Island being the Isle of Mann while the Neck has the rough shape of Cornwall and the south coast, the Wall and the Night's Watch match up with Hadrian's Wall on the English-Scottish border.

    The early Freys got their power and wealth through innovation, not blood

  • @liamdenise246
    @liamdenise2464 ай бұрын

    The problem is that they could have become so powerful, so respected, had they simply worked for it. The Freys kept asking for rewards and promises without doing anything first, arriving after the Trident had already been won and being annoyed you weren't rewarded, keep in mind they never fought in the rebellion either, then WOTFK where Walder refuses to answer the calls to arms, he threatens to hand Robb and Catelyn over to Tywin, demands two stark marriages, squires, fosterings and more marriages to other northerners all to let them cross the bridge and help own his liege lord. They got ever more arrogant over time, and started seeing themselves as untouchable and not dependant on actually fighting for their liege lord to win or showing their loyalty, as well as deserving of things that they did not have a right to nor were they particularly worthy of. The marriage to one of Walders sons of Genna is a example, they had no right to it and it was a stupid match that gave nothing to the lannisters and meant Genna had to stay in the Rock because her husband was to inherit nothing and was just sponging off of Walder. Then with Hoster Tully, while yes they aren't a bad match on paper, that does not mean that the Tullly's had to marry Edmure to them in order to continue ruling the riverlands nor that they were the only choice. And marrying Elmar to Arya is stupid, because while with Robb it makes sense in a very greedy yet somewhat beneficial for both sides way, Elmar is another son who will inherit nothing and therefore will have to sponge off of Walder or live in Winterfell dependant on Robb supporting his sister. At least with other marriages they often offer something to both, like Florents marrying to baratheon or Ned to Catelyn, but the Freys seem to just assume they deserve these marriages and not think of the benefits or even how the couple will be able to live. Not every family will let their married female member and her husband with nothing to his name stay rent free in their castle for the rest of their life.

    I love House Frey's lore. But there is one point I just seriously think needs changing. Them being the youngest house of westeros despite having been founded 600 years ago and fought through so many internal conflicts. Now don't get me wrong. I am 100% in favor of them being TREATED like new nobility and glorified tax collectors. But not BEING it. Why? Well because 600 years is a lot of time and internal conflicts are usually when most nobiliary houses are founded. Generally speaking low nobles, burgeoisie and men at arms tend to wind up promoted to high nobility when a segment of that previous high nobility was on the loosing side of a war to decide the new liege. That's not to say every civil war ends in a purge. Many don't. And most of the loosers likely would still wind up ok either by peace treaty or simply turning coat before the fight gets tough. But there tends to be a reshufling of the more problematic or unfortunate houses for some more loyal blood. Taking into account the way the Targaryen took over. I'm fairly sure they would have wound up forming quite a few major houses in those 600 years. Certainly larger than mere lords like the Frey. Counts at the very least. BUT. "New nobility" was more about ideology than actual right. As a european that actually paid attention in history class and learned a bit of my own I can find multiple examples, but I dare say the most comparable to House Frey would be the Red Dukes, the family of Medina-Sidonia. So excuse my quick history class. The first duke of Medina Sidonia earned his title by military right, having led the war effort against part of the Serranía de Cádiz and been extremely successful, way more than the other pretenders to the title and way, way more than expected. Before him the house was fairly small, being only minor nobility. They were part of the "Segura", basque men at arms turned lower nobility by military right as part of the Castillian army during the reconquista. And in their case while they had earned their own name, they would keep these roots quite clear, labeling the castles made by the house with 1 or 2 segurs at the side of the gates. (The Segura were known by that name due to the use of the Segur, a particular type of hatchet, as a sort of "badge of office" for men at arms of the basque and inner aragonese regions. The nobiliary house comes from the Castillian-Conquered "Basque Country" as said men at arms would be a very significant part of the Castillian army. And known for their prowess.) This was already a bit of an issue. While being proud of military might was no problem for nobles at the time. Being proud of coming from lowborn men at arms that rose through the ranks through it, and proud enough to openly display it despite having been given a nobiliary title, was a very easy way to earn a place at the top of the old nobility's "shit" list. But that was far, FAR from the last slight, the house of Medina-Sidonia would EARN their place as the old nobility's most hated rivals through great effort. So much so that even this first duke had multiple assassination attempts done of him, one of which was traced back to the very king that had made him a duke. They REALLY pissed people off. You see. Once you became a duke you had the right to knight people into lower nobility. This would be used for politics hence why Spain would come to have a knightly class so bloated than the territory of asturias would erect the right to universal hidalguia and declare even the servants born there would be knighted at birth. This isn't an exageration or joke it was that problematic. But that rarely mattered because if there's one thing Spain wasn't lacking was conflict to throw these "lower nobles" at. Be it as conquistadors, crusaders, mercenaries, fighting on the many external wars, or just fighting on the many, many, MANY internal ones Spain went through... Seriously when Charles the 1st and Vth took the throne he fought 2 simultaneous civil wars and his reign is still considered relatively peaceful internally compared with the rest of the empire. Spain regularly set itself on fire back then. Point is. This right would still have... "faux pass" of sorts. Generally speaking, knighting men at arms from branches of old lineages that hadn't proved themselves yet was considered very good by the old nobility. Knighting cargadores (sea merchants) for their prowess as burgeoisie was a good way to earn enemies. Knighting ex-bandits turned "voluntarios" (irregular infantry) and members of the Santa Hermandad (a peasant's militia turned police force) was the easiest way to have the rest of the nobility literally try to get you killed. And now you know one of the reasons why the assassination attempts happened. But why? Why would they do this? Well, 2 reasons. First, they ideologically had a lot of enemies from the start. This will matter a lot more later. So they guessed knightly houses that were seen that badly would be more loyal to them, whereas knightly houses from ancient men at arm lineages had a high probability of wondering if taking on their lieges might make them dukes. The second reason is the serrania itself. The land they were given was extremely mountainous and having been war torn for a very long period of time as it was the border between christians and muslims, criminality back then was through the roof. And back then the best way to kill criminals was to hire criminals as voluntarios, plus spain had a lot of history of hiring bandits as light infantry. Even some "old houses" that hated Medina-Sidonia like the Golfines started that way. In a way high crime hard to scout areas like the serrania didn't fight crime as much as pick favourites. So that's what they did. On top of this while the Marquis of Cádiz, the house on top of Medina-Sidonia, was generally not that problematic, they were firmly burgeoisie-aligned liberals and mostly didn't get into issued because they were so hands off. Being a very urban house that for the most part didn't care what the dukes under them did so long as they didn't cause too much issues so they could focus on keeping trade with america going, and every once in a while funding tech advances pretty hard. So while the Marquis themselves didn't cause issues, being under them was already a stain on your legacy, being under them and even more problematic was political hell. But this is far from where our tale ends as then the war of succession comes. And here real life and GoT come together beautifully. While Medina-Sidonia weren't tax collectors for a river pass, they were so for a MOUNTAIN pass, and between their need for more policing and their extreme allegiance to the Misioneros who they funded, they were known for being particularly voracious collectors and corrupt to boot. Having the propaganda of the old nobility against them likely didn't help their image. But still the war of succession was roughly fought on medieval non-political terms with allegiance coming more out of power dynamics. Which explains why the Marquis took the side of the French, despite being liberals. While Medina-Sidonia fought for the side of the Austrians. Medina-Sidonia lost but much like Frey, not much came of it. However, when the Bourbons took charge the Marquis would come to lament having won that war. As back then france was far more centralized and totalitarian than Spain, and while the Bourbon candidate had promised to keep Spain's political system, he didn't get the throne and the one who did immediately went on to try to impose their political system, known in Spain as Ultra-Absolutism. Actively fighting both the Social-Catholics like Medina Sidonia and the Liberals like the Marquis. This is what kickstarts the period of far more political and intense internal struggles in Spain. And this pushed the social-catholics like medina sidona to being firmly liberal allied, specially since the Bourbons tried to ban the Jesuits and other missionary orgs. Which is why even nowadays many jesuit branches have gone so far left they even became the main drivers of many marxist movements. This is why the house of Medina-Sidonia came to be known as the Red Dukes. As they went full left wing, and even allied with the republicans, for which they would spend Franco's tenure in exile. Still, the current Duchess is to this day a fairly political figure and having recovered some of her wealth after the transition to democracy she's been funding some fairly important social programs. But my point for this very long rant is, even to this day the current Red Duchess is treated as "new nobility", as an upstart that shouldn't be counted amongst the REAL "grandes"... despite her house being centuries older than many of those criticizing them for it. And having earned that title for far more honorable ways. So I can totally see why the Frey would be TREATED that way. But I can't believe they genuinely ARE the youngest house in westeros. Way too much has happened in those 600 years for them to still be the latest to rise to that stature.

    One of the few things Walder cared for was blood relations atleast in the books its why the Freys are also so dangerous they have so many connections to different families that should one succession go contested a Frey probably has a blood claim to it and for all his repulsiveness Walder made sure everyone of his blood has a role and place to lay their head. I doubt Lord Walder had he got what he was promised would've made a choice. Then again by that point the North wasn't looking too good and Walder could've just felt it best to hedge his bets like Tywin did.

It's specified that it's the second son. I think George does that for a reason. There's snobbery when it comes to the Freys, but I do think it's exaggerated. Walder Frey complains about the Hoster refusing to marry Edmure off to one of his girls, but Hoster did try to arrange a marriage between his brother and one of the Freys. He wasn't against the idea of it. Compare that to Littlefinger, who was tossed out of Riverrun for trying to get with a Tully.
