The History of Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie

Фильм және анимация

On November 23, 2015, an article on Variety was posted saying that Nickelodeon was planning on doing TV movies based on the shows from the 90's with the first one being Hey Arnold! It had gotten even more exciting when it was revealed that the plot of the TV movie was going to be about Arnold searching for his missing parents. While for the younger audience, they have to wait until next November, the fans who grew up with the show had to wait almost 15 years for this movie which would've been in the form of a theatrical film called The Jungle Movie which was planned to be released in 2002.
However, it was canceled from being shown and afterwards, there was a long fight from the dedicated Hey Arnold! fans to get the movie greenlit. But how did this happen? Why did Nickelodeon cancel the project in the first place? What was creator Craig Bartlett doing after Hey Arnold! was finished? How did we get up to this point where The Jungle Movie will be coming out? Well sit back and relax and we go over the long history of Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie.

Oh Gosh, I remember back in the old 2004 days when we where with all the rush of saving Hey Arnold. I've been an Hey Arnold Fan since 1997 I guess, and it was a big shock back then, knowing that they wanted to cancel such an amazing show. At that time the internet was very limited and most of the sites where made with yahoo groups or with geocities, so it wasn't really helpful. I remember having a site on yahoo groups where the whole latinamerican fans were. We even had a chat with Craig Bartlett ( I think I had that chat and others that you mentioned on the video, like the Megawacky Max interview.) and we always asked Craig for information about the movie, and he always was there in every chat. Even his wife Lisa was there, talking with us, caring about the fanbase. That's why I think Craig Bartlett is truly a great person. He is so dedicated to his fanbase, so open with us, and maybe the one reason which kept us fighting till the end, encouraging us to write letters (snail mail at that time) to Nickelodeon asking to release the movie, telling us some parts of the movie as a way of healing our frustration. He really has our eternal gratitude. So yeah, it has been a large path, but we made it, with patience and perseverance, and I am truly glad I was part of it.

im crying, we came a very long way. I remember watching hey arnold! as a very young kid 4-5ish and then rediscovering it when I was 11-12 in late 2007 and wondering what episode happened acter the journal and as i scrolling up and down on the internet to find out the show was cancelled. i was upset but I soon found the fandom and well ive been in the fandom since 2007. I remember actively visiting so many forums and geocities sites and watching the episodes off of Arnolds Eyes and making AMVS on livevideo and doodling arnold and his friends all over my 6th grade notebooks. When I was 18 and the hints started rising up in late 2014/early 2015 I was so up to joy of what felt I knew was coming and when the news released of tjm actually finally happening I cried so many tears of joy. when the redesigns came out last years comic con, I cried tears of joy AGAIN but I got goosebumps because it is actually happening. I have no doubt that I am going to be crying out of joy again this friday when the sneak peak is shown. Good job to the hey arnold fandom, we saved the jungle movie!!! I'm 21 years old now and will forever love Hey Arnold!

I just have to say that TJM was something that we all waited so long for. Those 15 years between the time that the first movie failed at the box office to last November felt like an eternity as it seemed like the saga of Arnold would never be properly concluded, but it was all thanks to the dedicated fans that this long shelved final chapter was able to be resurrected from what seemed like an impossible pipe dream by so many.

My brother and I wanted to see the Hey Arnold movie back in 2002... But my Dad went to the front desk and ordered tickets for Lilo & Stitch. This was back when he was limited in the English Language. I guess he also picked that because his nephew was an inbetweener for that movie. So that was in his mind. I don't regret it. 2 years later I caught Hey Arnold on Pay Per View.

I didn't mind Arnold saves the neighborhood as much when I was a kid. I actually still would watch this movie. I remember though the only thing that frustrated me as a kid was thinking, they have the perfect idea for a movie which is Arnold's parents and they do something like this, totally out of left field. But now that I get why I can totally respect that. And I think the nun the movie was worth the wait

I thought the movie was great! I think it was worth the wait and I'm proud of Nick for listening to the fans. If they do decide to do more episodes I'd love that, but even as it stands TJM was a great conclusion. I am really happy it got made and I remember signing the petition years ago thinking it was doubtful it would ever get made but I thought it was worth a shot to sign it. I've seen many, many fans of a beloved series never see their show get brought back but I'm happy to see that I was proven wrong and it CAN happen that great shows can get brought back.

It strikes me just how perfect it all is-- a wonderful show full of heart, the fans who love it too much to just let it die, the creator who takes the time to interact with them... It's such an Arnold story, isn't it? In fact, if Hey Arnold! were to get a sixth season, I could totally see an episode based on a similar situation, partly as a thank you to the fans who all worked so hard. I wish I'd been a part of that... Unfortunately, I only rewatched the series this year, to get ready for the movie, and that's when I really realized how much it meant to me.Oh, well; if something like this ever comes up again, I'm all over it.

Wow. I knew the development cycle of the Jungle Movie was convoluted, but I had no idea just how insane things were behind the scenes. It's shameful how Nickelodeon screwed over Craig Bartlett, and seriously, they should have realized that the Hey Arnold movie was going to have trouble making back its budget when they spent FOUR TIMES the film's budget on advertising. At least after more than a decade of bullshit, they did listen to the fans and have given Craig a chance to create the movie he's longed for. Admittedly I am a bit upset that the scenes/storyboard leaked earlier won't be included, but I'm sure they'll be reworked. Hopefully the movie will be a success and be a promising new start for Hey Arnold. Forgot about Party Wagon until you brought that up. Rewatched it, and yeah, it's still quite good. And I say that as someone who's not big into old west media. But my memory must be playing tricks on me because I could've sworn I saw it on TV and not KZread. Kind of a shame that Hellville never got produced, because I would've liked to see his spin on the concept.

Kinda surprised the HA6S (hey Arnold 6th season) project wasn't included in here, considering so many of the initial online interviewers helped work on that project, but this was very informative! We're all super proud of Craig not giving up and for the fan base keeping their chin up all these years! It was very hard, I know I really had a while where I thought it was pointless after trying for 10 years and there was hardly any change despite being in so many groups just trying to keep Hey Arnold alive and writing Nick Studios so many times, but then my nephew suddenly said he was a fan of the show from watching it late at night and that resparked my love and I went back to being more active in getting nick's attention, and it ended up actually paying off in the end. It is a truly beautiful story of hardworking fans and the best creator we could ever ask for, and now, November is just around the corner! :)

What a wondefful detail video about the history of "The Jungle Movie"! I always knew about the hell development cycle this project went through but Nickelodeon screwing Bartlett over by releasing "Arnold Saves the Neighborhood" first and the way they treated him is inhuman. I Feel so bad for Bartlett, Murray and other animators at the time how they were treated but after hearing that he had 5 other project he was working on with both MTV and CN during the early to mid 2000's makes me feel even more Sorry. I do understand why Nickelodeon put the ASN first over TJM since the last 3 animated movies they released previously made over $100 million at the box office but still they should of known better than to do that. Not only did it shot Nickelodeon in the foot when they did it but 2 of their other movies also became box office disappointments afterwards. No wonder why "Sponge Out of Water" took 11 years to be seen after the first movie. Of corse it didn't help that they were put to a corner when they were competing with Dreamworks and Pixar during that period. I don't blame both Dreamworks and Pixar for this as the Nick Executives thought they could get away with releasing a movie that's impossible to translate in the theatrical medium. I also blame Disney for putting more creative writers over to Pixar's projects rather than their traditional animated films during the mid to late 90's that led the decline for 2D films theatrically. But at least Disney is competent when their able to make smarter decisions when doing filmography. Granted some of them are not the best decisions like "Home on the Range" and " The Black Cauldron" but they have a long history of making good animated movies and still do this day. Nickeldeon doesn't have luxury or history to compete with them and given their own history I can see why it was very rocky for them. There is only a handful of Nick films that are considered good and a smaller portion that are at least passible. As for CN I can only speculate that they were starting to become too comfortable during the later years of their First Renaissance era (1995-2005). It seems like for them it wasn't too necessary for them when they had already a good chunk of great shows with them at the time. That all changed during the mid 2000's after the release of Ben 10 a number of shows that were released afterwards were either mediocre and forgettable or became cult followers after cancelled very shortly after one season. And after the 2007 Boston Mooninite Panic they created their new bloc CN Real which became their definitive Dark Age. It wouldn't be until 2010 when Cartoon Network started to go back to it's roots and released the saviors of their channel Adventure Time and Regular Show which gave birth their Second Renaissance Era and eventually Rick and Morty for Adult Swim. It's a shame many of Bartlett ideas came at the wrong place at wrong time. Maybe if he were to present them a number of years down the line around when CN was just starting pick itself up it's possible they would have reconsider their decisions. It's disappointing that it would be a long time before a studio like CN would realize that smartly written shows are the key to their success. And as for MTV I feel like it's one of their biggest lost opportunity to not pick up one of his ideas. I feel that this was also a time when MTV was going downhill when they started over saturating reality shows like The Osbournes, MTV Cribs, Room Raiders and later down the line maxing out the worse of the worse Jersey Shore and 16 and Pregnant. I know some people I come across declared the 2000's the worst decade for animation and while I do have some issues with that time period I don't think it's entirely true. It's just their were so many lost opportunities that would have helped animation as a whole during that era rather than starting and ending the second half of the decade with disappointment.

Ever notice in these type of shows the kids are like 9 (Hey! Arnold) or 11 (Doug) but they act like they're 13 or 14? Why not just make the kids 13 or 14? I think that the higher ups, the network types have an age that they think is most marketable, (around 10) but the show creators want the kids to be 13-14, so the kids end up technically being around 10, but act like they're 13 or 14.

11:26- I remember that very commercial with the scene reenactment, they really were advertising the movie a lot on Nick in the weeks before it came out and IMO it should have stayed a TV movie as it's pretty obvious from the visuals of what the film was intended to be.

when it comes to brining stuff back there is always the hope it'll turn out like Samuri Jack but also the fear it'll be more like Powerpuff Girls or even like thundercats (great quality but canceled too soon) I like a series that even if it goes and comes back can grow with its audience, one that evolves over time. Lots of shows have come back from the dead each with mixed results. Futerrama, The Critic, Family Guy, He-Man, Thundercats, Duck Tales, PPG, Teen Titans Go, Samurai Jack, Doug, Rugrats all grown up, Extreme GHostbusters, Korra, Zim, ALF, After Mash, Smurf, The Peanuts Movie, Alvin, Inspector Gadget, Tenchi Muyo, Speed Racer, Star Trek, and more. Some times its good to go back, back to the past. Some times we just have to take that show we love to a proper end and let it go.

You know, honestly I am so happy that The Jungle Movie is coming back.:) While I have only started to get into the show 2 years ago the fact that fans had to wait so long for an ending to the series is pretty sad to me. I am glad though it is coming out at least. And hey, maybe we might get that spin off Pataki's show after all if the tv movie does really well. To me, there are only two things I want out of Nick nowadays. 1. A continuation of Danny Phantom and 2. Hey Arnold! The Jungle movie. While the former probably won't happen the latter i'm glad it's coming to fruition. I have certainly done my part in trying to get it greenlighted by signing a few petitions and even showing Hey Arnold to some of my family members.(In fact, my niece which never grew up with the show likes it.) And given that most things are coming back it at least looks bright I would say. Though yeah, great job with the video.:)

  • @justinmiddleton8818

Party Wagon looked like it had the potential to be a kick butt show, if only Nickelodeon had not had their falling out with Craig back in the early 2000's with what went wrong with HA! The Movie flopping at the box office and the Jungle Movie getting shelved they could have likely had it on there as a Nicktoon. I think PW would have likely worked well given how much development and everything was given to the characters in the overall progression of the plot, they had the makings of a great series and at least it did get a couple of showings on CN back in 2004 but alas sadly it didn't get picked up as a full series.

Will the UK ever get the jungle movie? Everyone in my class in primary (grade school) was always talking about it! There was even a girl in my high school nicknamed Hey Arnold because she had quite a wide head! I think that says it all that the popularity was still rife in early 00s here. I'd be late for school numerous times in both high school and primary as I was watching it too. haha.

This is an excellent video Patricia! I loved your analysis of the production and history of The Jungle Movie. When I saw the film when it was released, I really enjoyed it thinking that it was a solid conclusion to the series. The fans definitely helped make this movie come to light. It's a shame however because of how unsuccessful the film was when it was released on Nickelodeon, it some how stopped Nickelodeon for having most of their 90s cartoon reboots on their network but instead air on Netflix. I guess this could be for the better because of their positive reputation for animation. But hey, we still have room for the yellow sponge right?
