I completely forgot about regular CS when i discovered zombie mode. The fact that servers differed from each other on plugins they had made zombie mode very replayable for me. If i get bored in one server, i would start playing in another because it had more fancy stuff or different zombie classes that changes how you play the game.

It's really sad how old servers with dark maps and actual thrilling gameplay are all gone now. Describing modern servers as "dopamine farms" is pretty accurate. I still remember how charming it felt when I discovered the mod and how scary it was back when I saw still a kid.

zombie escape is great because of the maps, some are almost full campaigns. the amount of effort it takes to create a balanced map is insane. I really like the teamwork aspect too, you actively need to protect eachother and listen to appointed "leaders" to escape with as many people as possible. but the biggest dopamine hits come from the "narrow escapes", barely jumping in a helicopter on time or entering a teleporter as the last survivor. they're currently working on a port for CS2, but this might obviously take a while.

Yeah, the tension you get when the timer runs out and the zombies seem to break in at any moment is an itch you can't have anywhere else bar doing something illegal like shoplifting expensive goods.

Thank you so much for making this video. Zombie Plague is my favourite gamemode in cs 1.6. I played it in 2014 and it inspired me to become a mapper for cs 1.6. 7 years later, in 2021 I started making zombie plague maps. I still make maps today and they are played by many players !!

Part of my childhood was filled with zombie servers playing on them all day

This was a bittersweet video, I used to play so much ZM back from 2008 to early 2010s , on those old school servers without custom weapon and lasermine plugins, just regular weapons, limited ammo and most importantly pitch black maps so you had to use the flashlights, to this day that was the most immersive and fun experience I've had in a video game, and I miss it so much but I don't think there are any such servers nowadays, the gamemode and ZM community got completely ruined by people making and adding broken weapons, removing the darkness from the maps and adding VIPs to servers and quite literally making them P2W and making it so that playing human was so much stronger that it took out all of the fun out of being a zombie because you would just be a punching bag for the VIP guy with his broken weapon. The earliest days of raw ZM were so good I can't describe how much people who didn't play that have missed out on, I still remember some maps like zm_sewers and my personal favorite, zm_lila_panic, using furniture and vending machines to make barricades on the doors, great times.

Agree with everything you said. I was a regular competitive player but in my practice time I played DM of course and ZM. I found ZM as a way to practice my headshot spraying but also it was so much fun at the same time. After I officially stopped playing in 2012 (since the release of CS:GO) during the years I was periodically playing the game just for fun whenever the nostalgia would hit me. Because the raw ZM servers are non existent, I enjoy the zombie escape mod now.

base building was really fun. there were a lot of one-way tricks for that which made it very skill-based to survive being the last one alive.

i was hooked into css ZE since i was 11 and to this day i still enjoy and play this mode and it always gives me nostalgia vibes when i play on my fav maps

Man, this really hits home, i remember spending countles hours playing OG Zombie Plague when i was a kid, those dark maps could be terrifying and really tested your skill sometimes, that added to the shop items being a limited and kinda expensive selection really made for a tense gameplay

For a majority of OP lasermine enabled servers, zombies have them too. This turns the game into a laser simulator where zombies would try to find flaws in survivor bases and kill them with lasermines directed towards them. Also lasermines have a few bugs that generally goes unfixed, like stacking your lasermine on top of the opposite teams lasermine, which if done correctly would negate both lasers effect and allow you to pass through. It can also be done with opposing lasers but its far more precise and way harder to set up. And if the lasermines had collision, you could put one underneath yourself and hold jump as you remove it, resulting in you getting launched towards the sky, allowing you to reach high spaces very quickly.

for cerberus and other immune to laser zombies you can just start placing on the wall then move your mouse in the middle of the screen effectively placing the laser as a blockade which makes the laser act as a prop that needs to be broken.

I still occasionally play CSS, on the "EliteHunterZ" server. It usually has 64 players on it at all times, except when everyone is sleeping.

I used to play a LOT of zm in the years of 2011-2015, as I recall, those times were amazing, also CS Nexon Zombies was at the top, unfortunately both CS 1.6's and CS Nexon Studio's zombie modes have changed to unrecognizable and it's not the same anymore... I do hope once I will be able to relive the nostalgic times of the good old zombie mode. Thank you.

Regular zombie mode for CS1.6 was pretty fun but CS Nexon Zombies was overkill. You may ask why? Well, that game was the resurrection of CS Online and that game had a lot junk and unnecessary content to the point that made the base game barely recognizable.

You should know Zombie Classic is the only mode that is well ballanced because of New Classic weapon limit which most of new classic weapons are really weak and zombies has 20-15k HP, thats why other servers like Korea, China and Taiwan regained its popularity due to the influence of content creators related to this mode Although the mode was fun to get in touch to community, but i also find that fun fading out overtime so modes like Zombie 3, Zombie Z with weird weapons are still in my prior but just be strategic enough to counter a human with full Epic or Transcendent weapons

Unfortunately CS 1.6 zombie servers are exactly what you described in your "Community Servers experience" video, 95% of Zm servers are basically feed the vip where basically you just die by a vip who has Infinite Ammo, has around 500 Armour to infect them which they have antidote so it doesn't even matter if you can turn them into a zombie, No Recoil , No Spread, 3-4 times more damage, and Anime weapons that are extremely unbalance that shoot so fast and have explosion damage so anyone near the impact gets damaged, basically no skill is needed for them its so trash ,and you can spot the worst zm servers by looking at the scores of the players in "View Info" usually everyone has like 2-5 kills and then the vip has 88 and gets a new frag every 10 second, as a server owner in CS:S this makes me really sad because my first Zombie mod experience was in CS 1.6 it was fun back then now its just a dumpster fire, and for people who say someone has to pay for the upkeep of the server and they have to give something to the vip for them to purchase, I've already made a balanced System in CS:S zombie mod with the Vip, so there is no excuse other than laziness and greed

You're damn right. I have my own zombie server in CS 1.6 and I must say that I maked it great. Balance, zombie classes, weapons, all that stuff is perfect. There's no freaking anime weapons with billion damage. Only bazooka, chainsaw and basic weapons.

As someone who played css zombie escape and loves the gamemode I just want to say thanks for covering it. Honestly while it may he confusing it has such a unoque gameplay loop that even by 2023 I don't know a single game that comes close to the fun I have on ze, and due to playing for years the dedicated community seems to keep growing and being present. I doubt it will fully die for a long time

I used to play this a lot back in 2008 to 2011-2012 and I fully agree with what you said in the video. The early zombie-plague mods were the best with the pitch black darkness or fog. It was very atmospheric, fun and interesting. The latest zombie mods become too overmoded and very unbalanced ever since they introduced laser mines. They were only fair when there were special zombie classes like climbing zombies and good maps with no OP spots. I feel like cs 1.6 Zombie-plague mod had a lot more to offer than the newest zombie mods on css and csgo. The newest ones never could offer the same experiences like the old mods did. There's 1 free mod called No More Room in Hell which is kind of like l4d and comes the closest to a good pve zombie game. As for pvp there's nothing that could replicate the same experiences like the old mods.

I'm a big part of the Zombie Mod community. I create zombie mod packs for download, I have my first zombie plague video with a million views, I played on thousands of zp servers, I edit plugins and partially create them, I bring back memories and I will never let this mode die. No game in history will ever replicate the legendary zombie mod! But one of my dreams is that, to have full zombie plague server... Maybe my dream will come true some day. Who knows :P

Golden era of CS1.6 Zombie Plague with the whole wave of modding MercyleZZ brought in was in 2008-2013. After that, the mode went downhill when every server try harder to replicate CS Nexon Zombies. Moreover, I'm not too fond with Zombie Escape whether it was in CS1.6 or CS Source and tbh can't talk that much about the latter since I barely joined zombie servers in CS Source. Zombie Plague was fun but then the whole camping thingy with laser mines, sandbags and golden AK47 m1 spam was the last straw all things considered.

Facts, people will alway remember zombie mode in Counter-Strike, the best nostalgic ver!

i always like to mention gmod's zombie survival as well. as gmod is even less restrictive than most source games it has become very different gameplay wise but it still has zm in it's dna. it's also the only gmod gamemode that never got much attention outside of the game and it shows. the community and servers are mostly the same they were 10 years ago (in a good way). it's still actively being played and sunrust (the most popular server) often reaches the player limit of 128 which is absolutely crazy for the source engine given that it's battlefield levels of player count. there are objective maps which is basically zombie escape with some left 4 dead elements. i highly recommend it although it's not as easy to get into as it has a lot more depth to it. it's also very different depending on what server you're playing on.

As a Filipino, I have fond memories of me playing zombie mode CS: Xtreme which was a mod for CS 1.6, in the local computer shops, such good memories, we would play this every weekend

i had a ZP4.0 server back in the days. the peek was between 2010-2012 when 32 slot was not enough and i started to think that i must limit ping to let others get in cause even chinese and brazilian gamers interested. it was a nightmare on summer because of school holiday. the server was mostly full till 11 pm and then only the hardcore dudes played till 2-3 am. i had a lot of fun after i beated all the cheaters. but one day sadly the original host/owner end up with server hosting and that time it was really hard to keep the community if a server down because of the competition. only a few servers offered clean and classic ZP servers. most server had A TONS OF additional creepy shitty extra addons. even those were very unbalanced most players accepted those and go on with those. it took about a year and a little money to get the original config from the original owners and reboot it with another host. sadly the old community not existed anymore and only a few of them came back. after a year i shutted down the server. it would be fun to play ZP again but the lack of interest might not worth it however i still have the full configuration. now i just started to baking a home server machine but damn... 1.6 is not a thing anymore and nobody interested.

Played Zombie Mod to death on CSCZ as a kid, then played Zombie Escape to death as a teenager and still play it to this day. There's one map I've been trying real hard to remember the name for months now. Thought it was Crackhouse, but no that's another one. And you finally told me, it's Toxic House!!!! That was probably one of my very first maps played on CSCZ! I'm getting so much nostalgia watching videos of this map now it's insane. Good times...

Zombie mode is also probably the most iconic gamemode in the source community and the fact some other games like tf2 and gmod also have zombie mode, i recommend you play zombie hunting in css its always full of people sometimes

Dalm this brings memories. I have tried cs 1,6 zombies and source too but mostly i play CSO or in the other words. CS NEXON, cuz i don't have a pc that time and even i do (cuz a little while i have) i don't understand how to download the mods thing. My brain is still brand new on the computer technology stuff (cuz I was a kid) and not a single on want to help me. (I even was confused what the hell is a G mail) anyway that's why i play NEXON and i love it. My favorite one is Zombie Shelter and zombie escape. I kinda like zombie darkness and zombie hero is just hard (but sometimes it's kinda fun glitching to a map and hide). Great video man and yeah it inspired me to play CS zombie again (probably CS2) cuz Previous CS is indeed pay to win.

My favourite are those "umbrella" zombies rather than zombie plague as they are level based and more playable with a mix of custom and l4d2 zombies and VIP while he gets better parachute and extra jump and also a few VIP guns is still almost a normal player level also they play on normal cs maps which is neat

I have played a zombie mod called "Zombie Hell Mod". There is one server in the world left with this mod, I think. There used to be another server, but it got taken down. The "Zombie Hell Mod" is probably the most fun mod I have ever played on cs 1.6 hands down.

funniest thing i remember is that condition zero zombie escape maps were a huge hit in 1.6. Also yeah, i played so much zm i still remember some hidden spots in certain maps

Zombie Escape was a blast, man. To this day I am looking to secure my first triumphant win on OBJ NPST (which essentially looks similar to Half-Life 1 layout-wise in some ways), last time I played, I nearly was able to beat it, I spent 2-3 hours on that CS:GO ZE server, trying to beat that map. No, seriously. That map was ridiculously hard.

Zombie Swarm and Zombie Infection (not biohazard or plague, the early zombie infection, no ammo shops nothing) were my favorite as a kid

I only remember playing on one server where some of the humans were actually walking around, thats because all zombies were either leapers that can simply leap inside any pipe shaped bases or were predators that could multijump 50times so they could catch ones using a jetpack(that could overheat) to get on a high spot

Nice man another game that has it i played it more than css or cs 1.6 its call of duty 2 had similiar zombie modes with theese concepts some survival

I remember playing zm_lila_panic or some version of it in CS:S. And it had a keypad with a password that you had to enter just to get inside a secret room. And the password was heavily guarded by the community who played on those maps and servers, so they almost never told it to anyone. I remember knowing of one and we always hided in there, not sure if the zombie players could also use the keypad to enter. It was unfair but also felt very special and fun. This mode needs to revive in CS2 and be just as good as the previous ones if not better.

ZE was so good, I remember the classic weird janky vehicles, the secrets. Some of the maps also looked INCREDIBLE, Mines of Moria, Helmsdeep, not sure if this was counterstrike, but I remember a Reactor map from FF7 that was so INSANE, those map creators had crazy skill.

There was a good long time during high school when my friends and I were just on zombie CS:S servers every single night, no questions asked. It was just a chill way to hang out online. Lots of nostalgia there.

really surprised zm_lila_panic was never mentioned in the maps section, that map had SOOOO MANY edits and versions of it and was on many zm servers on source back in the day and still even now, hell i think there is even a zombie escape variant of the map too.

This is how Back4Blood was made. The critically acclaimed spiritual successor to Count-Striker.

I think the jetpack was fine, it is a bit annoying to fight against but usually zombies would just use "Knife Blink" and reach the player quite easily

My affinity for CS 1.6's Zombie Plague mod and its sheer level of customization, has brought me to point of learning game development in hopes I can create a standalone but similar multiplayer experience. Bringing the classic to the better engine (either Unreal Engine or Godot, but the scope of art style is the Goldsource-look) and hopefully attract new audience to this type of zombie game. I'm most worried about handling the network and servers, but other than that, I program and model on my own. Also, Team Fortress 2 recent Halloween event added a vscript gamemode that's very much like the counter-strike's zombie mod. Its a bit unpolished and has balance issues, but the premise is in the right spirit.

Zombie escape lives on in other source games. Last i checked (years ago) tf2 had some servers and possibly gmod too. Pavlov, essentially VR Gmod, has a surprisingly big community with many recurring sourcemod classics like Zombie Escape and TTT.

Man, what times those were. Back in 2010 -2011. Had great community Zombies Servers like ZoD*| and the nostalgia followed by simpler times. Now the mode is just a husk of what it used to be. R.I.P ZoD*| and all the other servers that left great memories. Wish I could go back and experience it once again.

I loved the first zombie mods as a child. It was completely dark, you couldn't see 2 meters and the flashlight only lasted for a certain amount of time. me and a friend took turns turning on the flashlight to see something while we heard the zombies wailing in the distance xD
