42 year old here, bought a 2006 ZX14 (3 months ago) after figuring out that I absolutely do not like my R1150GS (riding-wise). Sat on a Hayabusa and it's definitely not as good for very tall people (6'7") as the ZX14. So I went with the ZX14 and I absolutely love it. Previous owner fixed it up with Öhlins shocks, and all lights etc black on black. I messed the optics up by putting a huge Givi topcase on the back. Not the right bike for this as the rear is not built for carrying weight and there aren't many anchor points for straps. But doesn't matter: if this is the bike you want to ride, you just make it work. It is ridiculously overpowered, really never rev it over 8-9k rpms. Just way too fast. Very smooth in lower rpms but at about 5k rpm all hell breaks loose. The 2006 does not have wheelie control, ABS or anything the like. More than once the front wheel accidentally came up. A close friend who looks exactly like me with the same bike sometimes does 120 mph for a few seconds on the highway, it takes about 3 seconds to get there from 75 mph. Adrenaline rush. I really love the bike but you need some self control.

I've had 3 ZZR1400s (the European branding for the ZX14) over the past 13 years. Yes, undoubtedly they are fast bikes, and it's potentially very easy to get into trouble as the speed is deceptive, but I've used mine equally for commuting on a 30 mile ride into central London, and for rides out. 80,000 miles on the first, 29,000 on the second before I go knocked off it, and now 56,000 on my current one. Comfortable and easy to ride, fairly manoeuvrable in traffic, and competent at handling high mileages as they are so under-stressed, if Kawasaki hadn't dropped the model I'd have another one tomorrow.

Came to the comments specifically for this. My 08 zx14 has dyno sheets for 175hp and 110 ft lbs at the wheel. And thats about as much as your getting from a first gen. He started with 154 hp and then said it has 154 ft lbs of torque which is wrong. I think it was just a matter of miscommunication not trying to missinform. But that bike is making 160hp stock and 100 or so foot lbs of torque. 2nd gens (2012 plus) are a whole different bike.

I had an 06 zx14, that was tuned by Ivan, at Rockland county cycles. He is THE destination for zx14's. After a tune, full exhaust, secondary butterflies removed, power commander, secondary ignition module installed it made 189.7 at the wheel. From the factory, these were detuned horribly. The algorithm for the computer and secondary butterflies in the velocity stacks only allowed full power delivery for 15% of rpm range. The butterflies would remain mostly closed until full throttle. And right after that point the computer started pulling timing obnoxiously. It went from sedate to an absolute animal. But was awesomebtondrive if you had experience, skill, and respected its power. What he describes as "twitchy" at low rpm would be 100 x worse if you didnt know what to expect or how to use it. If you get ham-fisted, YOU WOULD DIE.

the 1st generation Suzuki Hayabusa with the 1st Generation Kawasaki ZX-14 (ZZR 1400) specifications and performance! The ZX-14 or ZZR 1400 was released in 2006 after the demise of the ZX-12R. This was probably the model that Kawasaki should have released back in 2000 unfortunately they didn't get it right until 6 years later. Furthermore why Kawasaki calls it two different names is a marketing issue to possibly rekindle prior owners of ZZR1100 memories. However dropping the 'R' seems sensible. So what ever you want to call the Kawasaki it is a seriously nice bike - I've even tried and almost bought one. However there is one big issue - the ZX-14 is not better than the Hayabusa - different yes - but not ultimately different enough - and that's why I didn't buy one. The fact that the original Hayabusa remained essentially unchanged since 1999 and a further two years after the release of the ZX-14 should tell you that Suzuki did the good job.

Dude if that bike had its weight distribution slightly altered/tweaked, lightened by say 40 lbs, and dimensions just slightly smaller/thinner by a tiny fraction then it would quite possibly be the greatest sports bike of that era. Just a bit closer to the ZX-10r of that era and with that engine it would have dominated all.

I've owned both a ZX14 and Concours 14 at the same time. Just two completely different bikes in terms of power, capabilities, and comfort. They both serve different purposes. With a tune the Concours is deceptively fast and twice as smooth as the ZX as hard as that is to believe. The shaft drive is wonderful and the storage capacity is slick as well. But the ZX is in another planet when it comes to acceleration, it handles better, lighter and can be toured just as well when equipped properly. Im 35 and decided to sell the Concours after our daughter is bor and kept the ZX for a personal bike. It's awesome. This review is spot on. All the power with out the wild redlines, superchargers and butterfly smooth shifts. Will always be my all time favorite bike. Anyone that hasn't rode one is either to small, to short or riding something else they enjoy. But I guarantee they'll never forget riding one and everything else will feel slow after that.

@@theozman38 I have a 2012 Concours. So let's be real for a minute; NO, they are not BASICALLY the same bike, at all. The Connie is tuned for sports touring; the suspension is for sport touring, not even close to a true sportsbike. Don't get me wrong when I say this though; frankly almost none of the guys and gals in my team (about 450 ppl) can keep up with me when I go into DEVIL mode with the Connie. If you dare, it is more than capable to be sporty, but she's a big girl, and such, demands respect. Now, to the differences: Chain vs Shaft. I love the fact that my connie has a shaft, but of course, power output is quite different. Chain is way better at transmitting power to the rear wheel. Shaft loses a ton of horses there, but is super reliable and aside from a few ounces of hypoid oil every once in a while, maintenance free. The engine: The one on the concours IS NOT the same as that on the ZX14, even more different to the 2nd gen ZX14. The concours has about 1352 cc's. Concours has shorter cams, lower compression, smaller throttle bodies, cast instead of forged pistons, smaller exhaust. The engine cases are basically the same, but the connie is tuned for lower rpms. Concours 14 has a Variable valve timing module (VVT); ZX14 doesn't have that on the side of the intake cam. This little piece of engineering makes a huge difference. Bottom line, don't expect to (ab)use a Concours 14 as you would a ZX14. Not a good idea. Are they close in performance? My 2012 flashed by Ivan puts out about 160 hp give or take to the wheel. A ZX14 2nd gen bone stock will put out something like 185-190 to the wheel. Having said that, the Concours will perform each and every time; it is way faster than 90% of riders out there can handle. Once you have tried one, and put a huge grin on your face, you will understand. All the best!

Jeremy Doukler. Thanks for your reply and detailed honest opinion. The Connie is a sport touring bike ok I gotcha on that difference to the 14r. I hear so many people say it’s the same as the 14r but you’ve made it clear it’s a lot different and meant to be a tourer with a lot of grunts and speed but not a drag bike or to horse racing lol. I’ve heard people putting the stock 14r headers on the Connie to gain a few hp’s plus yah!! Ivan’s flash transforms it. Ok. Great information. Thanks a bunch. Ride safe.

@@theozman38 glad to help buddy. It is a common misconception that they have the same engine; I was even under the same (mistaken) impression for a while, but learned of the big differences later on. Yes, adding ZX14 headers may give you more hp up top (high revs) but flatter hp delivery on the below, where a sport tourer usually rides. Something to keep in mind. I preferred a good flash (Both Steve Sefsik at Shoodaben engineering or Ivan's flash are awesome) and a nice aftermarket pipe, and you are all set with all the HP you will need. Cheers buddy! Ride safe! :-)

My mate from the gym i used to go to had the zzr1400 and it was just on another level you could cruise at a ton with very little effort from you or the engine, just twist the throttle and you could either go stupid fast or just sit at 70MPH or 130MPH [on track of course] but if i had the choice of the kawi or Busa it would ALLWAYS BE THE KAWI. I gotta tell you after riding this and a hayabusa.. this bike should not be an option for first liter bike unless you're completely sure of your skill.

Ok, so my Z900 with a PC5, custom tune, and full exhaust, and shed some weight (443lbs wet) hit the dyno at 132hp and 78tq at the wheels. My tuner said he'd guess maybe 150ish hp and 90ish tq at the crank. This ZX14 has 154TQ...That's insane, I've never ridden one but I can't even imagine.

I know this is 3yo but why the hell not😂 Ive been riding since I was 3 started out on little yellow Yamaha trizinger 60cc ATC around five got my first motorcycle a Honda z50R I’ve been addicted every since. Thank mom! So went and looked at a 6k mile 06zx14 2 times the second I had money in hand and intended to leave with it. I’ve rode a lot of bikes and owned quite a few but never experienced a near 200hp machine. Took it for a 25-30 minute ride and loved every second of it it was surprisingly well mannered under 5500 rpm everything from then on is mind blowing. There’s really no way to explain it other than HOLY SHIT it just never stops pulling. 4th gear acceleration feels as strong as 2nd there’s no such thing as hitting the proverbial wall it just wants to eat . I know there’s faster bikes now but I can’t begin to imagine a world where a zx14 isn’t enough. If you ever get the opportunity to ride one take it you’ll either be in love or it’ll be a big hell naw it’s to crazy there’s no in between.

I had 2 years of experience on a DT125R then got to try a 2003 Hayabusa on an airfield, it felt smooth and easy to maneuver at slow speed and felt like a tractor when I accelerated under 7k rpm, 3rd gear, pulls hard, next gear PULLS HARDER, next gear "WTF DOESNT IT STOP?!" It made me think how insanely overpowered bikes are, the power after a 25hp bike compared to the busa feels like hopping from a WV Transporter 1,9D with 64hp to a 360whp Evo9
