YES! One of the most iconic horror moments ever. I was actually enraptured by the original (even though I saw the remake as a kid and literally laughed through the entire thing … sorry Ryan!) when I watched it the first time as an adult. It takes you on a beautiful, creepy, and unexpected ride if you let it.

I always appreciate the nuanced opinions Ryan gives. There's definitely too many "thing bad" videos that don't really consider the merits in flawed works. I kind of miss films like this, since it really feels like all media has to be commenting on something or lean into hyper-realism to the point where it's just dull. Malignant is the only horror movie in recent memory to go back to the bombast of the 90s/early00s and man was that refreshing.

  • @shoesncheese

    @shoesncheese

Too true. It's easy to jump on the bandwagon of "thing bad" because the algorithm seems to like that sort of content. I prefer this sort of content, because it's more realistic. Often times a movie isn't the worst thing ever or the best thing ever it's just kind of okay. And that's fine. Sometimes that's all you need. And Ryan delivers.

I'm ok with "I actually like this" videos when it's just a person wording their opinion well like Ryan usually does, as opposed idiots that have inconsistent standards, vomit nonsense buzzwords to look deep, reject basic storytelling concepts such as believable plot progression "because it's ART!!!" while they're literally talking down to their audience and preaching about not imposing opinions on others while literally doing just that. Ryan is a guy explaining his opinion and he respects the intelligence of the viewer, he's not an insecure dumbass who is salty that their shit tastes aren't being validated. They're just another type of toxic, and they just ruin my day when I make the mistake of watching their trash content.

The original is my favourite horror movie. It's such a quietly tense experience with a very ambiguous ending if the house is haunted or if it's in Elenore's head. I've never seen the remake but I'm now interested. Also holy shit I'm actually super early.

I know Ryan is calling it a guilty pleasure, and I guess I kind of agree because its really watchable and also kind of terrible, but in no way does it hold a candle to the original in my opinion. The level of opulence that the set designers etc were able to pull off in the original Haunting are still kind of stunning to me, we couldn't believe they were sets in any way, there's just so much detail. The remake suffers from being of its time - CGI became a very popular tool that in no way was convincing enough yet to be used as liberally as The Haunting remake does - a bunch of goofy plastic-looking ghosts and cherubs and shit basically just ruin anything the movie has going for it and make it goofy instead of spooky. And frankly, while I didn't LOVE the original Nell, she was at least something. Lili Taylor's Nell is just kind of an empty shell of a character, there's like nothing there and she doesn't really bring much to the table. She's just blah. At least Catherine Zeta-Jones manages to ham it up properly.

I watched the remake and enjoyed it, however I was not aware it was a remake and it’s good in its own right as long as it’s seen as inspired by the original story and very far from it. I agree about the original. It's a total classic. Hoyever, if a tremendous force causes the doors to warp inward, and there are no elephants in the house, that sounds like a genuine haunting to me. I can't attribute it to Eleanor's mental state because even Luke (the skeptic) is so freaked out he drops his bottle.

The Netflix Hill House series is my favorite of all the adaptions. Though, it really stems from the fact that I'm 1 of 5 kids, and we lost our dad to illness far too soon. So much of the trauma and grief the siblings go through in that series was mirrored of our own- (though we're not psychic or seriously addicted to drugs). It was a real emotional watch for all of us.

I feel like I pick up on something new every time I watch it. I was holding my breath that Ryan would bring it up but it’s understandable that he didn’t. Still, I cannot rave about that series nearly enough. I recommend it even to my non-horror-loving friends because the story is just SO GOOD. I love this take on the remake, we need more camp in cinema today, everything is either hyper serious or hyper on the nose and the line between the two rarely seem to cross. Also I want to highly HIGHLY recommend the book to anyone and everyone. It’s a very easy read, only 250ish pages and just leaves you feeling empty and haunted. The final line of the novella sat with me for a month and still gives me chills every time I think of it. The 1963 movie is a very faithful recreation of the novella (and is one of my favourite movies), but the book does have, almost a better way of showing us the quiet horror of the house and the frailty and innocence of all the characters. I’d almost put it as required reading for horror lovers just so I have more people to gush about the book with! I think I’ll read it again this autumn :) Amazing video as always Ryan, even though you didn’t love the 1963 version haha, always looking forward to your next video!

That final line of the book is haunting. I've seen several adaptations of Jackson's books, and I have to say nobody has ever quite captured how scary they are. I think because they make the mistake of making it psychological horror. But Jackson is closer to Lovecraft in my opinion. Not that she deals with the same subjects exactly, but in that the horror is both inevitable and inexplicable. In a Jackson book, people WILL burst into group hysterics with almost no explanation. Children become violent with little to no provocation. Ghosts might appear, but they won't be described by anything except how they make everyone feel. It's emotional horror. To Jackson, the human heart is unknowable and that's why it's terrifying.

I always had a soft spot for this movie probably for the mystery of the house itself. There was just something about the character of Eleanor trying to discover the dark past of the house and then doing whatever she could to help the spirits of the children. It always left me a little teary-eyed when she finally helps the children and allowed her spirit to be taken with them.

I think an aspect of finding cliché stories endearing these days is that at some point they did stop being the cliché in a lot of cases. If anything the subversions of those genres have now become the norm to such a degree it feels refreshing to go back to the original less unique and more run of the mill origins for our entertainment. Heck in some cases seeing the origins of a lot of these 'subversions' is something a lot of younger newer fans are doing for the first time within the past few years. At some point the subversions become so common theyre a new cliché of their own and get a bit tiring to parse.

After having such a great time watching the Haunting 99 with my dad & sister, we then rented the original from Blockbuster. The original scared me so badly that I didn't sleep for 2 days lol. I will never forget the terror of the noise/ wallpaper scene. It's a prime example of what you see is never as bad as what you can imagine.

Oh, I love the 1999 movie. I really, unironically do. The house is so beautiful and horrifying because of its beauty. The house is totally a character on itself. I wish I could visit that house and at the same time I'm so repelled by it. And there is so much I adore about Nell and Theo as characters, too. I don't care if it's good or bad, I simply adore the movie. When I later read the novel I was torn between loving the portrayal of Nell's state of mind and missing the house and the supernatural elements. But yeah, I learned to appreciate it too.

I really liked this back when it first came out and I still mostly like it now. I'm a sucker for horror movies that give me just a single interesting thing and I really liked some of the ways they used the house itself. The statue in the fountain grabbing someone, the bed frame's kids, the spooky door, that ridiculous lion head... loved all of it. Feels like someone made a video game house (like you mentioned) with the intention of it being interacted with, not just to be used as a location or background piece.

I thought all the CGI in The Haunting was entirely appropriate. This and the remake of House on Haunted Hill both managed to turn a house into a believable antagonist. I think The Haunting did it better in a way because you have the character of Nell who feels a closeness to the house in a familial way. In House on Haunted Hill, everybody hates the house and wants to get out; nobody is working to save it. I remembered Liam Neeson. I remembered Catherine Zeta Jones. I remembered Lili Taylor. I forgot Owen Wilson was in the movie. I thought it was Liam Neeson who "lost his head".

It's one of those instances where the unnatural, uncanny look of early 2000's CGI was actually used to the film's benefit. Because you're using it to portray spirits, ghosts, and impossible realities. Of course those would look unnatural and uncanny. The bedpost children coming to life is a great example. They look horrifying, in no small part due to the creepy CGI animating them. But it absolutely works.

Not gonna lie, miss the aesthetic of campy 90s horror. It's like they really try to make something but technology just isn't where it needs to be at the time or at least it's not applied effectively. They felt more genuine. Meanwhile the Batman was a better Saw sequel than Spiral, Leatherface from Mortal Kombat/DBD got a movie, and here I am playing World of Horror longing for Asian European fusion spooks.

Loving your videos! I highly recommend the book; the best scene imo has never been adapted and it's towards the end with Nell drifting into a daydream that, since it's from her perspective, really throws you out of reality in the most disconcerting way before another character screams and grabs onto her to run away, leaving you so rattled from the unknown. I love the 99 version if only for a laugh, but feel really sort of bad for the cast; they all are so good just like, when the script's big twist is the ultra cliche "she's really the long lost great great descendant :O" I can't help but feel myself die a little inside. The creepiest part is genuinely that face-morph CGI in the ballroom, and it's meant to be more endearing like she belongs there.

I watch Netflix’s Haunting of Hill House constantly. It’s my favorite show, and I will usually cry my way through it because of themes I relate to, such as loss, familial addiction, mental health, fear of passing on said mental health to kids and thus a fear of having kids, plus the nicely done LGBTQ+ representation. That last bit makes me cry just as much as watching people survive their own heads + the house. I needed that surprisingly simple representation as a kid who couldn’t accept liking girls while being one, and I certainly wanted my representation to be HOHH’s level of beautifully and lovingly created! Mike Flanagan is easily one of my favorite filmmakers with his wonderful resume of work, definitely including Haunting of Hill House. It will stick with me until I leave this mortal plane! I gotta need to give these movies a shot asap, I need to know where this show I love stems from!

Yes! Thank you for highlighting the stunning production design in the remake film. Set design in film has always been something I admire and appreciate and this film, after decades, remains near the top of the list for all-time favorites. Regarding the original film, that moment when they were trapped in the bed and that horrific noise was pounding at the doors is the only time as a teen that a movie scene made me physically contort. The direction and cinematography of that film was superb.

I first saw "The Haunting" (1963) at a movie theater. I was 13. A male friend was along, and this movie quite simply scared us silly. A slow burn, sure. But allowing you to use your imagination, the sense of claustrophobia, even the interactions between characters was enough to keep you interested. For example, when it's discovered that Dr. Markway is married, unknown to Eleanor, who is developing feelings for him, was shocking. And the housekeeper with her introductory speech, laying down the rules, and how she always leaves before dark... that sent chills down my spine. A classic. Then, there is the remake. Where they twist the original movie, take out all the interactions between characters that adds depth to the story, and make it (as you note) a CGI heavy behemoth. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean should do that thing. And poor Eleanor. She spent her entire life waiting on one horrible, demanding old woman, and seemingly will spend eternity waiting endlessly on another. Bottom line, Ryan, the 1999 movie sucks. But if you can find pleasure in it, more power to you.

To an adult the effects might not look good, but they blew my mind as a child. And even watching this video now, I love those statues of the kids moving it's just so uncanny. I suspect that this was the movie that made me love creepy statues in general.

The 1963 version will forever be a favorite of mine. The scares in it are more effective to me because they don't so much show you what to be afraid of, but rather makes you question what to be afraid of (and in some cases who to be afraid of or even for), such as the mysterious hand Eleanor was holding to the camera effects used to give those rapid fall shots. Plus, I also like the sense of leaving it open for interpretation, as was mentioned in the video: is it truly haunted, or is it all just the inner turmoil and guilt within Eleanor manifesting itself into reality? It all depends on how you see it. (Personally, I think it's both) BTW I also highly recommend the book if no one has read it. Definitely give it a read or a listen (if you prefer audiobooks)

We ended up having this one on VHS when I was a kid. I loved it and I still do. Maybe it's the nostalgia talking, but I think I've grown to appreciate the amount of work gone into creating the practical moments mixed on with the CGI. I know the animation is really goofy now, but I think the direction was at least good enough to make me attached to the characters and enjoy the part fantasy/part horror approach. I'm also kind of a "If the story is interesting, it isn't bad" kinda person sooooo ...

I think it helps to be an adult when these "cringey" movies are viewed. It was enjoyable when I watched it in 1999 but I did forget it pretty quickly. I don't expect all movies to be analyzed in detail however. Some have content like interesting camera angles or unique scripts that benefit from deep analysis, other movies are just some nice way to pass time. The CG didn't bother me as it does some people and that may be why I don't cringe when watching and can just enjoy the flick for what it is. Hugs from central Ontario Canada.

You'd love Shirley Jackson's novel! It is one of the few books in this world that actually frightened me. It's less that Jackson denies the house is haunted and more that she doesn't necessarily explain what the haunting might look like. In one amazing scene, the main characters begin screaming and running from something behind them...but Jackson never tells us why. It's so chilling! She is an absolute master of horror, mass hysteria and female paranoia. There were also STRONG lesbian undertones throughout the book, and I'm still waiting for someone to film a version that does justice to it. I enjoyed Mike Flanagan's series of the same name, but it really had nothing to do with the book other than the characters' names.

The child ghosts are a little over the top toward the end especially, and the moving statues are as well, but it’s still so much fun. I know some people bash it. It would be easy to nit pick.
