I love how almost every time Ryan takes on a classic horror flick, he sets aside time in the video to discuss its later remake. After all of the in-depth discussing he does for the classic, it serves as a neat comparison between the two, especially if you're someone who (admittedly) watched the remake first but never the original. 😆(Though in the case of Prom Night, I saw neither).

@@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose no shame, especially for smaller slashers like prom night or my bloody Valentine. And some remakes are legitimately good, the Friday the thirteenth remake is better than most of the original Friday movies and the TCM remake looks beautiful thanks to the returning cinematographer from the original and has some legitimately amazing acting. There is only one horror movie where I feel like you absolutely have to see the original and not the remake and that's nightmare on elm street specifically because Freddy in the remake is canonically a pedophile which makes him so much less fun to watch than original Freddy who was a much more acceptable child murderer.

Ryan, you need to see Prom Night 2. It's surprisingly better than the original. Sure, there are no narrative ties, but it features a fun villain, incredible effects, and some surprising themes that are worth exploring. I think you'd like it. Part 3 is a continuation of 2, it's nothing special but it is campy fun. Skip part 4. It goes back to the slasher basics and has no connection to any of the other films. It's very by the numbers.

Prom Night II, despite having nothing to do with the original, is a genuinely well-acted and enjoyable supernatural slasher. There is some great practical effects work, and a number of tense moments, including one girl stalking another through a deserted locker room which works FAR better than it has any right to. It's a shame they used the "Prom Night" name in an attempt to make a franchise (its original title was not "Prom Night 2"), but in my opinion it's well worth watching. Prom Night III, on the other hand, drifts straight into horror/comedy territory. There are some gruesome and unique kills in this one, but by this point the writers are trying to make Mary Lou the female Freddy Krueger, and they're trying just a wee bit too hard. It's still an OK watch, just set your expectations low and enjoy the supernatural carnage. You'll never look at (American) footballs, battery acid, or ice cream cones the same. :D I've yet to see the fourth movie, so I can't give an opinion on that one. Excellent review and analysis, as always, Ryan! :)

  • @DenevaUnchained

The bit of the original Prom Night that always got to me was how disconnected some of the killers were to what had happened. Apart from the boyfriend, who is confronted with his actions in the shape of his living girlfriend and her family all the time, none of the kids who chased Robin out of the window appear to even remember it. It's a blip in their memories that doesn't haunt them, has no bearing on their current lives. Even the girl who finds the photo in her locker placed there by the killer seems to forget the incident two seconds later.

I mean, Michael Ironside plays one of the main characters. It's got a crazy Carrie-esque death scene as the opening sequence, a good-girl gone bad possession narrative (and by bad-girl I mean it's like Olivia Newton John in Grease going black leather in the finale), an abortion subplot, an evil rocking horse, and revenge from beyond the grave. The Prom Night "sequels" were basically their own movies with "Prom Night" slapped onto them. Prom Night 2: Hello Mary Lou is about the ghost of a girl who was accidentally set on fire at her prom after winning prom queen. She takes revenge by possessing a quiet girl named Vicky to go after those to caused her demise... and win prom queen again cuz Mary Lou is petty and self absorbed. It's got a decent idea and some of the supernatural elements like Vicky viewing things in a warped alternate reality or losing herself to the ghost are interesting and genuinely cool (I LOVE the chalkboard scene, like such a unique way of showing the ghost crossing over). Unfortunately, it falls flat by not taking advantage of the concept it creates, and Mary Lou is really misguided with her revenge. Prom Night 3 is a fucking joke. It has Mary Lou escaping hell to seek revenge, only for her to immediately fall for a boy named Alex and wants to get rid of his gf to keep him for herself. And kill anyone Alex doesn't like. It's garbage. Like I hate Alex, I hate Mary Lou and her shitty motivations for anything, its plot is stupid, and it has less of a reason to be called Prom Night than the previous one as the prom IS BARELY A PLOT POINT UNTIL THE END SO WHY THE FUCK IS IT CALLED PROM NIGHT??? And I didnt even bother with the forth one. I'd only recommend the second cuz it at least has some good ideas and really good practical effects. Just pretend it's called "Haunting of Hamilton High" instead of Prom Night 2.

The saddest thing about the 2008 remake is that it was written and produced by J.S Cardone of all people. Cardone directed 'The Slayer', one of the weirder and interesting slasher films of the 80's. In 'The Slayer' you get a taut psychological thriller set rather well in an isolated location. In 'Prom Night' Cardone pretty much went by the numbers wherever possible with only some suspense creeping in here and there. A damn shame for 80's Horror fans.

Prom NIght 2 is classic 80's schlock. Totally worth the watch! There's even this thing about the movie being essentially two different movies because of the people working on it switched off or something. So we'll get totally goofy sequences between nightmare fuel scenes that don't matter to the grand context of the film. Particularly the scenes where the Main Character is being haunted by the main villain in her dreams. Also the fact it was never meant to be a sequel to prom night. It was supposed to be the Haunting of Hamilton High, but they opted to slap that label on it for the sake of easy sequel money. So it was a good stand alone movie damned by being labeled as an "Unnecessary Sequel".

Hey! Just found your movie reviews today, and I had fun listening to and watching you talk about it. I first saw the original Prom Night when I was a kid, and THAT , was a LONG TIME AGO! LOL. But Prom Night would come to have a placei in my heart , because, on the Night me and my parents watched it, I had just got a brand new puppy the same day. I was holding her while I watched the movie , and I fell in love with the pretty, mean girl Wendy, lol. I hadn't names my puppy yet, so I named her Wendy after that character. I do look back on the movie now and when I look at Wendy , I just don't see a High School student, lol, she looks like she is in her late 20's to me. But I still love that character. And she had the ultimate chase scene! I agree that the killer reveal was kind of disappointing. BUT, a movie that has a rolling, decapitated head , stop rolling in and upright position, infront of the entire PROM , lol, it can get by with some not so great aspects I suppose!

You gotta give PROM NIGHT 2 : HELLO MARY LOU a watch, man. It's actually a superb mix of Nightmare on Elm Str., inspired an iconic scene in The Faculty, and shows the (at its time)longest "actor being on fire without cutting away", especially since the stunt is clearly female and without the hunky suit that was normal back then. Go watch it. It's a gem.

I've only seen the original Psycho and none of the rest of the franchise. What I always wondered was, was Norman role playing his mother's real persona or his own version of her? When Marion overhears "her" berating Norman I wondered if thats how she really treated him. Because she zeroed in right off on a possible attraction. Which the detective at the end said was the reason "mother" killed her.

video ask!! the babysitter and its sequel have been 2 of my favorite movies of the last couple years. they feel like real love letters to late 20s year old horror fans, us who jumped on the late 90s/early 00s teen slasher films late - but as soon as were able! the original 3 screams shaped my love of horror and influenced a lot of my favorites after discovering those as a teen. i.e: ikwydls, urband legend, the faculty, the craft, etc. then the glorious and often garbage era of remakes in the mid-00s. this was my whole horror origin story! and when i saw the babysitter i thought... they get it. it's goofy enough to be a wink and nudge to the fans of teen slashers, but has enough genuine heart and real scares to not be patronizing. well, anyway! if you ever feel like it, i would love to hear your analyses on the films. critiques obviously welcome. you can't be a member of this community without letting your favs get sh*t on. huge, huge fan!

Your description of the protagonists kind of reminds me of The Beyond(1981), where despite the fact that there is a main character, the movie doesn’t really follow her all that often. Maybe horror screenwriters in the early 80s were just interested in that concept. Also, amazing video!

What did Idris Elba decide to do after this 2008 remake? Yes, the critical panned David S Goyer movie "The Unborn" and the Rasperry Award nominated movie remake "Obsessed" from 2009. At least 2010 got him some nice movies (although let's not forget Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance from 2011 and whatnot). Idris Elba was never picky with his projects, especially not before his breakthrough with Pacific Rim, 2013

In regards to the setting of the remake. I think it also brings up that well known scary TRUE story about the asian woman who goes missing in a hotel only later to be found in its water reserve on the roof. OBVIOUSLY dead. Like she was totes dead, taintin' people's water and experience, dead. Super duper dead.

Dana Davis (Kit from Craig Of The Creek), Linden Ashby (Johnny Cage from the OG Mortal Kombat movie), Idris Elba (duh) and James Ransome (who's set to appear in the hyped sequels to the Sonic movie and Spider-Verse, was also in one of the recent It movie) are in it.

I'd love to see a video on Prom Night 2: Hello Mary Lou. It has absolutely nothing to do with this movie aside from a high school prom setting, and is more like Carrie meets A Nightmare on Elm Street. But it's completely bonkers and crazy, I kinda see it a sister film to Slumber Party Massacre 2, which is also bonkers and crazy for no reason.

Something I think you could explore is a short manga called Life Is Money. The Premise is similar to Netflix hit Squid Game, where a group of people are brought together to play a life or death game in order to win a crazy amount of money. However, the catch with Life is Money is that none of the participants are allowed to use physical violence of any kind and thus the character have to both use and withstand various forms of psychological attacks as well as dealing with their own issues. It tackles things like Isolation, Hopelessness, Depression, Gender Identity for one character, Human Cruelty and shows that people don't need to be violent to be dangerous. It's quite a series and it features a lot of horrific images and manga panels that really sell the horrific thoughts ripping through each character's mind.

Im trying to decide if i want to pivot to watch other infamous movies like Cannibal Holocaust or I Spit On Your Grave. I saw Prom Night remake in the theater and was so disappointed. I was fine with it being a "prom night" movie not tied to the original. But man was it boring. TBH, I love the idea of a creepy teacher getting obsessed with a student. That's a real world idea. I love that it took place at a busy hotel full of guests. It seems like you should be safe and have plenty of help but in reality, you don't. But damn, it was so slow and boring. There were so many ways to make this really good and they just went with the laziest way to tell the story.

The sequels are really only sequels in name. Prom Night II & III were originally meant to be titled "A Haunting at Hamilton High" and be their own franchise, however to my understanding they wanted to attach the Prom Night name to it in order to sell more copies. Prom Night IV has nothing to do with II & III and might be worth checking out since it's another slasher movie.

That's actually a pretty fun concept, building on the more likable characters of Ronnie and Lisa. Have a slasher film wherein our killer is after one character, and two of her best friends are the actual protagonists of the story. They're only in this by happenstance, and we are just as surprised as the slasher that they are the final survivors.
