You can tell that Geoffrey Rush was having an absolute blast in the remake. The '99 film knows exactly what it is and it's just a fun, fun ride through and through.

I think thats why I love it so much. It doesn't take itself OVERLY serious but everyone is serious enough in their rolls that it makes it an absolute ride. Geoffrey Rush absolutely had a blast with that roll you can tell. It ends up feeling like going through a haunted house attraction at Halloween time. Terrifying but also pretty hilarious.

The intro of the remake with the amusement park, and the audience just wanting a cheap thrill is an excellent opening to a thrillingly ridiculous ride. Maybe my favorite low-brow horror

I'm not going to lie, at age thirteen the House on Haunted Hill remake scared me shitless. But honestly anything involving asylums - haunted or not - utterly terrifies me.

I remember watching 13 ghost as a kid with my dad like right after we got surround sound speakers set up and we both got so scared that after the movie we watched dragon ball z for a few hours....we also talked with our pet turtle to help feel better

I love the scene where she only sees them through the camcorder, lowers it, raises it and they're now looking straight at her, that was haunting.

I enjoyed both versions. The remake is fun for what it is even though there is a horrible CGI at the end....eh but at least you get a funny line, "I had nothing to do with this. I was adopted!!!"

Watched it for the first time with a group of friends at one of their houses, which happened to be in the middle of nowhere at the top of a huge hill. That made it significantly scarier and more enjoyable.

My grandma looooooooved Vincent Price and House on Haunted Hill was a favorite, so she showed me it when I was a toddler and that woman has haunted me ever sense. Her, and the decapitated head they find later. Every time I am in a basement, I always think of her floating along or a head just hanging out.

Absolutely terrifying the first time you see it. Absolutely hilarious every time after that.

I love William Castle. He was definitely more a showman than a director, and you can tell he absolutely relished giving his audience a thrill. Its sad that he ended up a victim of his reputation: He still dreamed of being a serious Hollywood filmmaker later in his career, and tried to make it happen by directing Rosemary's Baby. But the financier knew having Castle as director would send the wrong message and insisted on Roman Polanski. In the end, Castle settled for a producer credit, and also has a Hitchcock-esque cameo in the film. Just another way Castle helped influence the horror genre, even late in his career.

The '99 remake also smashed a couple of horror movie tropes: final girl lives, with no zinger/twist ending AND her new friend, the "token black guy" not only survived the "first to die" cliche', but made it to the end!

Could also throw in, that there are two survivors. That happens, sometimes, in thrillers or action movies. But, kinda rare in the horror genre. 👍🏻 It's a cheesey flick, but I like the ending and some of those images were genuinely creepy, especially for it's time.

I cannot think of an abundance of films where that cliche statement applied. It didn't apply to any of the cornerstone slasher films. It didn't apply to any of the universal monster flicks. It didn't apply to any of George Romero's Living dead films. Or a number of others. The statement itself is a cliche, but the content behind it is far from it.

Really glad you also agree with the murder mystery aspect of this movie. I love that you showed and talked about Castle's gimmicks as well; hokey as they are, he had something special with those. The remake looks... um.

Every time you bait us with Hill House I'm so convinced the next one is going to talk about it and especially the The Haunting Netflix anthology and I fall for it every time...

The remakes of House on Haunted Hill, The Haunting, and 13 Ghosts all merged together for me at the time and this is basically the first time I’ve truly understood which movie was which.

I just watched it other night and forgot how funny he is in this movie.

I thought the remake had some legitimately tense sequences like when they catch the doctor on camera moving around the hospital, when he breaks the wall and the darkness comes out, and the ending sequence. And oh god, the hallucination inducing room was so creepy.

House on Haunted Hill ('99) is actually one of my favorite movies. It hits my sweetspot for campy/legitimately scary that other movies don't really hit for me. (I attribute it to 80% of the crew being Tales From the Crypt veterans). I love the cast, the look, the score is MAGNIFICENT... seriously go listen to "The Price Petard". Not to mention- The doctors looking at Melissa on her camcorder and Jeffrey Combs shaking and speed walking through the security monitor footage are all-time scares for me. ALSO, the Rorschach ink blot ghost made of naked woman is such an insane design, I've always been able to overlook the 90s CGI. It's just so wonderfully weird and for where the film is set, it feels relatively diegetic.

The ghosts in the remake of House On Haunted Hill were utterly terrifying to me when I saw it as a kid. The way they twitched and walked like stop motion puppets was pure nightmare fuel for me lol even though some of the movie is a product of it's time and some of it aged horribly, it's still one of my favorite spooky movies.

The history of the horror genre is such a fascinating topic.

Under all the 50s cheese, the original house on haunted hill has something that is much darker beneath the surface that still disturbs me today. The jumpscare with the old hag, the girl who was killed in the attic by something unhuman, its sinister enough without over doing it.

The original House On Haunted Hill was the first horror movie I saw as a kid. It's always held a special place in my heart, I'm glad you're finally covering it!

I come from a household that adores Vincent Price, House on Haunted Hill was my first ever introduction to him. Ever since that day I have also gained a fascination for the man, he was a true marvel. Accomplished actor, world class chef, esteemed art collector, LGBT supporter, and even a keen ally of Native and Mexican Americans. He was a truly amazing man, I wish that I lived at a point of time in which I could sincerely thank him for his work, and for how he pretty much led me to a path of horror I never would have discovered otherwise. Well, even if he isn’t with us anymore I just want to say, Thank you, Vinny, for being a role model for me, for bringing me to an older era, for showing me that there is a brightness in the dark, even if that sounds hokey it’s true, I appreciate you, and I hope there will be more like you. Thank you so much, Mr. Price.

The remake gave me nightmares; mostly for all those scenes of the crazed asylum doctor. On another note, 28 Days Later gave me far worse nightmares, (one of those fuckers jumped through my window).

The 99 remake traumatized me as a child BECAUSE of the scenes with the doctor and how he would twitch like that. I hated it as a kid! Still unnerves me a little to this day.

I remember watching 1990's movie when I was WAY to young to be watching it. It was on TV and I was terrified of it while my sisters enjoyed the hell out of it. I think it was the imagery that got to me the most. Funny thing was, my parents thought we all loved it and found a DVD version for us to watch...on a road trip and had to try and ignore it while my sisters watched it twice.

I really like the bad CGI in the eldritch entity actually. It makes the House's premise seem more alien and out of place to me.

I agree. It's not exactly perfect, but it looks quite alien, odd, and not quite of (or entirely IN) this world. They used it well and when it would be effective, not willy-nilly all over the place, and the actual design is rad if you ask me. Then again, I also have a much higher tolerance for bad CGI than practical effects, oddly, so it probably wouldn't bother me even if it were legitimately awful...

No you don’t understand, I’m literally OBSESSED with this movie. It’s one of my favorite horror movies! And even the remake and it’s sequel, as 90’s 2000’s cliche as they are, are still so iconic to me. I rewatch all of them every Halloween! Actually the 99 remake is my personal fav!

Darkness Falls might be an interesting film to look at.

Nice one. I'm still curious about the pre-reshoot version that was scrapped when Stan Winston team got on board. That honestly looked like a more interesting movie.

Vincent Price is my favorite actor ever. I'm loving this revival he's been having lately. It brings me so much joy! Thanks for the video :)

The only thing I remember from this movie is the extreme smash cutting that gave the horror scenes a strobe-lighting effect. I hadn't seen that before and it really stuck out to me. I think they did a much better job of that in Thirteen Ghosts, but didn't really improve the story much.

Weirdly enough the haunted house remake and it’s sequel have a special place in my heart, it’s one of the first horror movies that I remember watching and it actually landed for me, I’m also a sucker for creepy hospitals/sanitariums tho

Honesty I like both. The backstory for the remake reminds me of the PS2 game " The Suffering." Play it, it's worth it!

Starting off the year with some William Castle. NICE! I really enjoyed both versions of the movie. The Original with Vincent Price and it's can't be yet spooky charm. And I like the remake for it cast of characters, including Geoffrey Rush, and it's schlocky campy funny.

I'll give William Castle this - he was a showman. I do find it odd that he used FL Wright's Ennis House for the exterior of the house, but the interior is classic Victorian-gothic.

You should check out James Whale's 'The Old Dark House' 1932. It's a lot of fun, with great dialog, and impressive effects considering, well, low budget 1932.

William Castle remade that with Hammer films, starring Tom Poston, and absolutely nothing like the original, though the Femmes are still violent. Goofy fun like a Peter Sellers movie.

I always felt like the "double twist" was just as much a part of the gimmick as the skeleton.

I would love to see a video on Apostle, it's an amazing Netflix original horror movie that really went under the radar. It's got really really strong tension, and some pretty visceral gore.

That remake is genuinely disturbing. The part where the guy in the camera room gets turned around and his head is just hollowed out, still gets me when I see it. And how there’s usually a constant barrage of whispers in the basement that the characters don’t react to at all. Makes me feel like we’re clued in to the true reality of the situation

Glad you finally talked about these because the remake traumatized me when I was younger, and your calm and often humorous demeanor really help. Specifically, the camcorder scene with the ghost standing still in the hallway and the following closeup jumpscare was burned into my brain as a kid when I was stuck at my grandparents’ house and this happened to be on tv while I was all alone, and even though you showed the jump scare 3 times in this video I felt more mentally prepared to visit the scene as an adult and really confront it. It still terrifies me tbh, but I don’t feel as helpless as I did in my youth, rather I’m fascinated with it. It’s like when you finally see the monster for what it is, and you become less afraid of it, especially now that I am older. This video has kinda helped put some of that childhood trauma to rest.

Yay, you're back!! You were missed. I love the original AND the remake. The remake is at the top of my favorite guilty pleasure movie. Wait, nah, I'm not going to lie. It's just at the top of my favorites, I 'm not ashamed.

I didn’t watch this movie until I was an adult, so I wasn’t scared, but I know for a fact that as a kid I would have been traumatized. Also Vincent price is always a treat.

I always liked that the two survivors of the remake were the two that weren't actually descendants. It was a satisfying little touch.

Recently watched Matinee which has a character influenced by William Castle, highly recommended if you like Castle's films and 50s/60s low-budget sci-fi/horror.

House on Haunted Hill (the original) use to scare me so bad as a kid, you did a fantastic job Ryan!

This remains a very engaging film, I really enjoyed your perspective on it. It also reminded me of one of my absolute favorites from that era: _The Haunting_ from 1963. I really hope you will cover that some day, it not only has extremely skilled and unique cinematography the pacing is highly tense with superb acting. It also happens to be based on a must-read classic by Shirley Jackson that I've read at least five times over the decades.

I've been on a bit of a Vincent Price binge lately. As a fan of Hammer Horror, it's taken me a surprisingly long time to get around to watching Vincent Price movies. Some of them are a bit hit and miss, but my favourite two I've seen so far are Witchfinder General and Theatre of Blood. One is Vincent Price terrifying in his portrayal of Matthew Hopkins, the other is prime camp Price. Could you do a video on these two polar opposites in terms of Vincent Price performances?

The whole “rich person-crazy scheme” gimmick reminds me of Truth or Dare (a movie that I really like, even though it is horribly cliche lol)

Hi Ryan, hope you have a great year. The 1999 version is one of the first horror movies I can remember watching. It really disturbed me, but I loved the Marilyn Manson + Silent Hill style it had (that now I see it comes from Jacob's Ladder), hell, I still really like this style, unfortunately it got sooo overused that no one can stand it any longer. I watched again a few years ago, and I still enjoyed it, although it was a bit disappointing for me. They made a sequel of the remake, but I can't remember a thing about it.

Pay attention to the video; it mentions this. It's called The Darkness and it consumes its victims, swallowing them into the house. The physical manifestation of the house's evil.

I actually quite love the Dark Castle films; as cheesy as they are, they were fun watches.

ty for resurrecting my love for the horror shlock that i grew up with. dark castle made some of my favorite movies, thirteen ghosts and ghost ship just to name a couple. love your videos!

What a review to start the year! just rewatched the remake in Dec and enjoyed most of it, except for Chris Kattan. Looking forward to another year of reviews.

Hi, Mr. Hollinger. Have you ever thought about covering made-for-television horror movies such as The Night Stalker/Night Strangler, Trilogy of Terror or Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby? Or blaxploitation-era horror movies (from J.D.’s Revenge to Ganja and Hess)?

Yesss, I was waiting for one of my favorite film KZreadrs would talk about one of my favorite, under talked about horror films. I loved both versions of this movie since I was younger. Something about the 90’s one was just dumb fun. Of all the KZreadrs I’m happy it was Ryan too😂🙏🏽.

Hey Ryan. Your videos are phenomenal and I really like your insight into the horror genre as a whole. That being said I also really love really old black and white horror. It just love the atmosphere. And I would highly appreciate your take on the classic universal monsters. Maybe make a marathon out of it? I dunno if it fits the style of your channel but I would really like having you talk about it. Especially since the reboot of those movies failed so hilariously

I love the 1959 version. Though I have to give it to the old caretaker lady. I know it's coming everytime, and yet, it never ceases to make me jump a little (and the way she glides! That's just so weird!) But kuddos to you for trying to make that scare work in your video, even if it just didn't have the proper buildup for me to make me jump.

The remake is def a guilty pleasure for me. Geoffrey Rush is so good in everything he's in and I really feel like he channeled this would be modern version of Price's original character for it. The imagery is very "nu metal music video" but it's fun for what it is and the history of the house itself is very interesting to me. Also it's got Jeffrey Combs and Spike from Buffy in it!

One movie I remembered watching was like one where a old lady’s eyes melt when she’s talking about a train or something. I forgot the name of it

Tbh the editing in this movie really freaked young me out 😅 the hallway scene made me scared of dark hallways for at least a year

The remake was such a product of its time in terms of costuming and effects, but I still have a fondness for it. I watched it for the first time when I was younger and my parents were just starting to get used t the idea of having horror content in the house, so I'd never seen anything quite like it at that age. I loved it, lol.
