@@juanitajones6900 suddenly, no. It was never that interesting and has been excruciatingly dragged out; the show has already covered so much of that emotional ground with Margo. I care more about the political stuff that got sidelined for the entire season (and to a lesser extent S4). instead of a bunch of Di/Cha episodes i'd have rather seen episodes on the Troubles or the Windsor Fire (instead of one damn scene). it wouldn't be so bad if the writing hadn't declined so sharply as well. The actual Queen's message on the handover of Hong Kong is this: "Five hours from now the Union Flag will be lowered and the flag of China will fly over Hong Kong. More than a century and a half of British administration will come to an end. "During that time Hong Kong has grown from a small coastal settlement into one of the leading cities and one of the greatest trading economies in the world. "There have been times of sacrifice, suffering and courage. As Hong Kong has risen from the ashes of war a most dramatic transformation has taken place. Millions of destitute immigrants have been absorbed and Hong Kong has created one of the most successful societies on earth. "Britain is both proud and privileged to have been involved with this success story. Proud of the British values and institutions that have been the framework for Hong Kong's success. Proud of the rights and freedoms which Hong Kong people enjoy. Privileged to have been associated with the prodigiously talented and resourceful people of Hong Kong who have built upon that foundation. "The British flag will be lowered and British administrative responsibility will end. But Britain is not saying goodbye to Hong Kong. More than three and a half million Hong Kong residents are British nationals. "Thousands of young Hong Kong men and women study in Britain every year. We share language and the English common law. And thousands of Britons, too, have made their homes in Hong Kong. The shared legacy of family and of friendship, trade and investment, culture and history runs strong and deep. "Britain is part of Hong Kong's history and Hong Kong is part of Britain's history. We are also part of each other's future. We are confident that the ties between us will not only endure but will continue to develop. "In a shrinking world Hong Kong's role as Europe's gateway to Asia and Britain's role as Asia's gateway to Europe will reinforce the bonds between our two societies. "For all these reasons my government and I will continue to take the closest interest in Hong Kong and in its development. The British Consulate-General, which will be inaugurated in a few hours time, will be our largest in the world. "The Sino-British Joint Liaison Group will continue for another two and a half years to discuss matters concerning the implementation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration. That Joint Declaration itself remains in force for fifty years. For many years to come, the Hong Kong connection will command our attention. "Hong Kong now faces its transition to Chinese sovereignty in excellent condition - prosperous, stable and dynamic. "Unprecedented though this moment in history may be, we have the utmost confidence in the abilities and resilience of the Hong Kong people. Britain learnt long ago that Hong Kong people know best what is good for Hong Kong. "We have no doubt that Hong Kong people can run Hong Kong, as the Joint Declaration promises, and that faithful implementation of the Joint Declaration is the key to Hong Kong's continued success. "The eyes of the world are on Hong Kong today. I wish you all a successful transition and a prosperous and peaceful future.

we should never forgot that Hongkong is the product of opium war... a city created to sell addiction to China. Hongkong will forever remind us of the sin of the british empire and why the empire deserve to be destoryed. yet not a word of apology is mention, not an expression of guilt is make. the empire could not even be honest with itself at the end, what an embarrassment. "More than three and a half million Hong Kong residents are British nationals." who immediately have their rights cancelled and their statue deny by the british parliament. so the correct term is "WERE".

@@hkboi7433 Malaysia is also colonized by British and if you dare to say "loyal to the British now", the people will "ask" YOU to leave Malaysia and go back to UK. If you look at the colonial history of the British Empire, no colony enjoyed democracy until the Brits were about to leave with the exception of “white” colonies like Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The primary goal of the Empire was to broaden her commercial interests. Yes, some colonies developed along the way but this was not the major goal and certainly not spreading democracy. Hong Kong was no exception. Before the 80s, the HK governor was appointed by London and all members of the Legislature were appointed by the Governor. The HK government basically followed executive orders from London. The 1967 riots against British rule were suppressed by the HK police. There was no democracy in the western sense. Besides, why would they be interested in HK’s democracy? What if the people here voted for an anti colonial governor? You are too simple, sometimes naive!

Knowing how particular the show is about regarding details, I don’t doubt this was something they considered. But watching the scene, I can tell they were going for a different kind of solemnity - you can see with the focus on the rain, the voices, and the soundtrack. It’s emotional in a different way, one that focuses on the monarchy rather than the people. For better or for worse, really, as a Hong Konger myself, but I can see what they were going for with this scene and it was never going to actually be about Hong Kong (though all the other details are immaculately done).

@@Bluey306 Yes I agree the decision to portray this event as part of the affairs of the Royal Family in the 90s is more to invoke a sense of turmoil for what the Monarchy now stood for. By then the colonial rule and expanse of the Commonwealth and Overseas Territories largely shrunk from the British Empire, and so with it the antiquated status of Monarchy as Head of a global conquering State. One could see more of this metaphoric receding in other parts of the episode: the lowering of the Union Jack flag in HK, the retiring of the HMY Britannia, the dissolution of marriage ideals steeped in religion and constitutional duty, upholding personal happiness over honour and the role of the public as subjects to the Royal Institution. The Prince at the time represented a voice for change and progression in an era when it was still incredibly difficult to challenge the inertia of a long-established, tradition steeped system and way of life.

Look at what happened not too long ago with the riots, the denial of a medium for the people of Hong Kong to voice their concerns and greivances for their homeland. Hong Kong is unique to the people of Hong Kong who have worked so hard to take it to where it is. Once China took it back.. you decide where Hong Kong is now and whether China will let Hong Kong and the people of Hong Kong grow beyond towards a post-handover time. The communists could have easily taken it back in 1949 after kicking out the Nationalists, but Mao was smart enough to know that honouring the treaty, even it was an unequal one signed by a regime that no longer existed, would allow China to have a gateway to the West and reduce reliance on the Soviets. History have proven this correct, with the later Sino-Soviet spli and Britain being the first Western country to recognise the PRC as the legitimate government of China. Thatcher was still stuck in her bubble after the Falkland wars victory against a tin-pot dictator, when most of the military have decided that Hong Kong was indefensible. Her hopes of keeping Hong Kong fell like she did on the steps of the Great Hall of the People, Beijing.

The scenes were meant to be ominous instead of the celebration of the time, no POV from Charles or the CCPP but we are taken as an omnipresent view point clearly showing the weigth of the handover in the UK(represented by Charles) and the force and power of the CCP. My father, while having spent most of his adolescence in Shanghai, vividly remembers his childhood in Hong Kong. He never went into detail with me but something made him upset, which is why he took the first opportunity he had as an adult to move out from China and settle himself in Germany, despite all the hardships this entailed. He now has spent more time in Germany than in China and is getting demonstratively more upset with the state of the country with every year. I think his mother/my grandmother and his sister/my aunt dying last year and him having no way to visit them for most of the time after put the last nail in the coffin and once my mother has no real reason to visit the country, he'll probably never set foot in the country again. Went off topic there, sorry. But yeah, this hurt a lot of people.

It felt like the CGI and set design for what should have been wide shots (e.g., the British army marching in Hong Kong) wasn't on point for this season. Many scenes were not only obviously CGI, but they also lacked the grandiosity of the previous seasons. Maybe shooting during the pandemic did it good. I miss the magnificence of scenes like Elizabeth's arrival in Nairobi, the funeral march of Philip's family in Germany, Charles' speech outside the Sydney Opera House, or that walkabout in Brisbane where Diana was swarmed by well-wishers, which the production team masterfully crafted.

Now imagine if there had never been an empire and a vastly better-off "nation of shopkeepers", speaking a bizarre variant of German known only to it's own people, paid China absolutely no attention whatsoever beyond quoting prices at them.

This is a real life event that happened in the 1990s Hong Kong was a British Colony and in the 1990s was the Hong Kong Handover which was the British giving Hong Kong back to China also known as the Transfer of Sovereignty of Hong Kong to China. The deal was that Hong Kong is supposed to remain independent with its own government and free elections but unfortunately China has been violating that deal multiple times and began more authoritarian measures in Hong Kong including Macau.
