The Gunfight at Jenkins Saloon
Tascosa, Texas, in those turbulent times of the 1880s, epitomized lawlessness and chaos. It was a place where legends were born, and outlaws roamed freely. The echoes of Billy the Kid's footsteps still reverberated through its dusty streets, mingling with the shadowy presence of Dave Rudabaugh, John Selman, Henry Newton Brown, Charlie Siringo, and countless other fabled figures who had left their indelible mark on the annals of the Old West. And by the time of the “Big Fight” aka the Gunfight at Jenkins Saloon, Tascosa was still as wild as ever.
The LS Ranch, located on the outskirts, harbored a band of ex-Rangers whose reputations preceded them. These LS boys were known for their heavy-handedness and soon were bestowed with the moniker of barroom gladiators.
Things finally came to a head on the fateful morning of March 21st, 1886. It was then that Ed King, a bona fide barroom gladiator, rendezvoused with his paramour and dance-hall gal, Sally Emory, just beyond the threshold of Jenkins Saloon. Unbeknownst to King, Sally’s ex-boyfriend was waiting.
Also mentioned in this episode: Tascosa’s Boot Hill, Hogtown, the music of Charley Crockett, and a saloon girl with a heart of gold by the name of Frenchy McCormick. #wildwest #history #cowboy

I was born 30 miles from Old Tascosa and stopped by anytime I drove on State Highway 87 (Boys Ranch Road). The stone courthouse still stands and Boot Hill is well-tended. The Lore of the Panhandle and Eastern New Mexico figured significantly in my upbringing. Ft. Sumner, Las Cruces, Lincoln…I’ve been to all those places. Great channel!

I live in "Mobeetie" Texas, in modern times it's called Sweetwater TX. The dance hall hotel and saloon that he met his girlfriend in, was most likely the Bluebonnet Hotel. It burned down in the 1970s unfortunately.

Great episode as always Josh. I had heard of The Fight At Jenkins Saloon but had never really read up on it. I do have a topic suggestion. I was watching an old western TV series last night called Stories of The Century and one episode was about an outlaw named Harry Tracy. I had never heard of anyone doing any kind of videos about him. Would he be a good topic for you to cover on the channel?

Hello Josh...Such a great episode...I had never heard of any of this...Hell, I didn't even know where Tuscosa was (or is, or how to spell it for that matter). Please give a listen to "The Sad Bag of Shakey Jake" by Humble Pie if you aren't already familiar with it...also "Outlaw Blues" by Dave Edmunds...genuine outlaw music..Your work and efforts are MUCH appreciated!!!

I also didn't discuss the people that occupied the land prior to the Comanche. Unfortunately this wasn't meant to be an exhaustive history of the panhandle, just a glipse of Tascosa during it's cowtown days and the lead up to the gunfight at Jenkins. I'm not really sure what happened to the sheepherders but it would be interesting to find out.
