Well the guard broke parade to open the gate meaning he doesn't have to follow usual protocol like only being able to shout or not stopping if someone's in the way. Its like he's breaking character for a moment.

To anyone wondering: The guns may be loaded. There are special provisions where they can carry loaded guns without knowlege if the public, so you should assume that is it loaded. Also, the swords and bayonets, when equipped, are extremely sharp.
