The thing I loved about the special was how it let Mantis be center stage for once. And the actress seemed to be having a BLAST with so much screen time to play, and act, instead of always just being a side character.

Mantis is just amazing here. Hilarious and touching. Her character is very childlike, and when she laughs or yells, it's damn funny to see how extreme she gets with her emotions.

@@earlchatterton9133 Yeah it makes sense really. Her entire being is built on emotion and empathy. She walks through a world, where every casual touch, opens up her mind to the feelings of those around her. Usually in storytelling, that kind of power makes a character withdraw, become anti-social, or at least very reserved. But not Mantis. She's just an open nerve of emotions, letting all of them flow through her like water at all times. She just...experiences them as is, no real filter or restraint. So yeah, it makes perfect sense to me that she was the emotional center of the story, and the driving agent for the narrative. Given the entire story is an emotional one. Nobody else in the cast has the maturity of emotions, or self-awareness to push that story. Hell half of the people in the crew barely acknowledge they HAVE emotions, much less what to do with them.

I felt the ending when Mantis revealed to Peter Quill that she is his sister was one of the most touching things in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Peter has lost someone he loved in every film he’s been in (his mom, Yondu, Gamora, and betrayed by his father). This is the first time Peter has felt like he has a family once again.

Can we talk about how great the facial expressions are by Chris pratt. I noticed it here more then any other movie of him. It was sublime. Him reacting to the first song. His face changing when he walked towards the present. his eyes while he finds about mantis being his sister. When his face lights up when giving groot a present. He did great here.

Yes I felt the same. I thought the Mantis and Drax parts (so most of the special) were ok, but either the acting was not great, or the screenplay was a little slow. Maybe because it was hastily put together. They couldn't carry it for that long. I felt like Chris made up for it with his acting.

I'm happy that Pom Klementief finally got center stage as Mantis! She has so much potential as an actress!

It was one of the biggest payoffs to James Gunn’s film running gags. They made a big deal about Kevin Bacon in the first movie and now he finally shows up as himself. It’s a full circle

I'm happy for you dude. Experiencing Christmas through the eyes of your kids is incredibly special, and I can only imagine how magical that must be for someone who didn't get his own Christmas celebrations as a child.

One of the complaints I read about this movie was, Pratt appeared to be phoning it in. Which I couldn't disagree with more. Peter is dealing with losing Gamora,again. He's also dealing with trying to lead the people on Knowhere. He's got a lot on his plate. And he seemed emotionally distracted and detached. Not because it's phoned in, because it's good acting.

I went in expecting very little, and actually loved it. I even cried at the ending part with Mantis.

Dave Bautista is awesome as always as Drax and I'm glad he's also in the spotlight and played a big part after all kidnapping Kevin Bacon was Drax's idea!!!

My favorite part was when Rocket got exactly what he always wanted lol! But seriously Chris you got me in the feels talking about you and your family this Christmas 🥺. From one parent to another make sure you enjoy and really take in every second of it. Hope you guys have the best Christmas ever!

James Gunn is great at balancing more cynical humor with more sentimental moments. The last scene with Mantis and Peter was so sweet.

To me this special felt like a christmas episode of a really good cartoon show starring a random celeb as a guest voiceover. It just had that vibe going and I loved it Edit : I just got to the part where Chris explains how this special reminds him of those TV show christmas episodes, so I’m not alone here yay!

Truly one of the best Christmas specials I’ve ever seen in my life and truly thank u James Gunn for making this and making us feel emotional for guardians 3 next year

Nebula had the funniest line about actors at the end, Karen's delivery was so amazing, and Pom stole the show.

I freakin loved this special. As someone who loves Christmas, and Christmas movies, this was a lot of fun. Big thanks to James Gunn for giving us an instant Christmas classic that I’m for sure going to be watching again and again around the holidays.

I think what hit when mantis gave the reveal, was already knowing everything that happened to Quill and to find out what Mantis told him you can have a heart warming sense of finally someone that Quill can call family that's related.

cant imagine growing up without christmas stuff. I myself live n south america, here theres no snow, no winter, not really a reason for it, but we still had a ton of christmas stuff, gifts, american movies, decorations, even my mom who works on creating gifts from wood and painting them after was a factor into me getting a lot of hype for christmas. It was very touching to see you get hyped now that you have kids and you will be able to create that for them, so congratulations, hope to see more videos from you this holiday. Merry christmas!

I have to say as someone who is a casual Marvel watcher, I enjoyed this Holiday Special. And it's weird, for a lighthearted special, I thought Pratt showed how good of an actor he can be.

i been watching your reviews for years and you saying how you can celebrate christmas with your family and enjoy it in ways you couldnt before...really beautiful dude. have a great christmas man!

There was actually an appearance by Mark Hamil in the GOTG special. He was the guy shown in 2 shots drinking next to a deflating Santa on Knowhere. It’s real quick but it’s him. He’s shown in profile and then in a wide shot. Edit: After further research it apparently is not Mark in the shot. Sad panda.

His son Nathan confirmed it wasnt actually him and then Mark himself joked about how similar they look.

This was so good and I am glad Gunn and others didnt do this as a cheap xmas cash grab, but created it to last the test of time.

I cannot stop listening to the opening song. Exactly how Stuckmann describes it and I love the enthusiasm! Even to though they get so much wrong it still fills me with holiday cheer.

Thank you Chris for these vids. We are all lookin forward to hearing about any Xmas stories you'll have for us. Secondly, James Gunn is continually mastering the art of the squad/team. He makes the audience really care for the individuals. But I can't help feel that he is setting us for a character death or two. He showed us with Yondu, he isn't afraid to kill off a character for an emotional payoff. Lastly, the Xmas special was as close to a 10 as a special gets! Kudos to all

Its easily my favorite Christmas thing I’ve seen in a very long time and the music was so good, smashing pumpkins soundtrack in my Christmas movie!?!? James Gunn stated on his Instagram page that the opening animated sequence was meant to pay homage to Ralph Bakshi films that used rotoscoping animation. It may have been just a coincidence that this sequence looked similar to the animated sequence in The Star Wars Holiday Special.

Hey Chris, loved the review as always but was wondering if we can expect a review of Andor?? Would love to here your take on what was a very ambitious instalment in the Star Wars franchise. Would also love another review of house of the dragon now that the show is finished and has had time to marinate. Keep up the good work!! Keen for Shelby Oaks!!

The animation may have been meant as an homage to the Star Wars Christmas Special, yet there were aspects of it that reminded me of Ralph Bakshi's rotoscoping work on his films, particularly "American Pop", and the 80s Canadian animation of films like "Rock & Rule" and "Heavy Metal". I was pleasantly surprised by The Old 97s and Kevin Bacon, knowing Bacon has performed as a musician in The Bacon Brothers. Also I swear towards the ending you briefly see Mark Hamill as a bum.

Yondu is probably one of my favorite characters after part2, you could feel his warmth even under that rough exterior and attitude. This special brought it all back and i definitely teared up😢

Our family isn't your typical family when we celebrate Christmas. We have a black tree, often decorate it with horror themes, and our go-to films are A Nightmare Before Christmas and Krampus. And of course The Grinch (which I guess is typical Christmas). The special was fun and I thought Gunn did a great job. Hope your holiday is great. As a father, I have to admit kids make the holidays better : )

I usually hate Christmas specials but I loved the songs, I loved the humor. It really is a change of pace.

Honestly I don't know if it's marvel's idea or James Gunn's but man this was the perfect holiday gift. Also it explains so perfectly who Mantis was with ego in the second movie.

This was a nice bridge in between Guardians 2 (well..technically Infinity War, Endgame and the beginning of Love & Thunder) and Guardians 3. It was nice to see something cheerful and merry before we see the Guardians one final time 🥲

perfect use of that obscure Smashing Pumpkins Christmas song.

My wife and I both loved this, and have watched multiple times already. And actually, I was thinking how the animated parts reminded me of the Rankin Bass animated Hobbit & LotR stuff, and yes, Ralph Bakshi's work, too.

Great special. Had the elements for the MCu And also Christmas special bits to work. Nice to see/hear Yondu again too. Defo do some Christmas films, can even do some Christmas horror to get the best of both worlds. Look forward to it sir 😁

I started feeling this was a middle of the road, overly musical Xmas special, but then the ending came with a 2-hit emotional punch that hit me in the feels. Well played MCU.

I never watched Footloose but I think the first Kevin Bacon movie I ever saw was Death Sentence. In my opinion, one of the best revenge films.

I feel like Marvel should make more Special Presentations rather than tv shows that are stretched for too long. They proved with this and Werewolf By Night that it works better in every aspect of the production.

The Guardians movies are some of the best things Marvel has done, I need to watch this.

The animation was in fact, according to a post made by James Gunn, a nod to Ralph Bakshi's work and similar animations. It was made using rotoscoping just like Bakshi's animations.
