Ground invasions are pretty rare and only happen for HUGE personal achievements. The one at the end there? Lance Franklin was like, the 6th person in the game’s history to reach 1000 career goals. In over 120 years of history. I still remember when Tony Lockett did it - again, with the Swans. I was in high school in the 90s and I still have my tip sheet from the week, like laminated (I’m a Swans girl through and through)

That was awesome seeing you watching our game. I played from age 11 up until I was 27. My body aches in a million places now but I wouldn't ever imagine a life not going into battle every Saturday for 2 hours of marathon running, car crash collisions, tears and bloodshed with my brothers and beers after the game with those I called foe only an hour ago. Aussie Rules Footy taught me many life lessons.

Dislocated sternoclavicular joint with clavicle inside my chest cavity placed a centimeter from main pulmonary arteries. 1 of 3 surgeons in Aus that could do the surgery. Me luckkkky!

A lot of these moments had to do with the stories behind the teams, players and situations. Without context they are generally not that impressive. There is a great official AFL video explaining the rules of the game and also some other highlight videos of the best "marks" and "hits"/"bumps" if you want to see more. Great reaction

Thx for featuring, awesome! I'm from South Australia. Here are some basics for you to help put the game into context. These facts apply to a lot of players, but obviously not all, as just like any sport there are a wide variety and levels of skills dependent on the positions played. An Australian Football field is roughly twice the size of an American football field. An AFL player may run an average of 12-14kms, some as much as 20Kms in a single match. Some players can reach speeds of up to 35kms per hour when sprinting, while at the same time kicking to team mates and scoring goals on the run with pin point accuracy, 50metres away. Tackling blokes around 100kgs at full run and taking marks at double their heights over the shoulders of other players. These guys are amazing athletes and would be competitive in many genres. Very proud. It's a great game!

You need to check out the American who plays this game. Mason Cox came from US College basketball to the AFL. An amazing story. Video is called “Mason Cox - Don’t Believe in Never” Mason will play his 100th game in a couple of weeks

So you get 6 points for the middle holes and 1 for the side goles post play stops when a player marks the ball and players aren't allowed to tackle most goals are kicked with in 50 metres.

Just to clarify, players can tackle, unless it’s been marked yes, which means it’s been caught from a kick that was over 15m long. And yeah most goals are within 50m but if you can kick it from further it still counts, even if it bounces in without another player touching it.

It's funny that you mentioned someone dropping their phone in the stampede because exactly that happened. One of the fans who ran the field bashed into one of the opposing team's players, Zach Touhy and fell to the ground after the impact. He got up, apologised to the player and kept running. Touhy then spotted the guy's phone and keys on the ground and chased the guy down to return them

My daughter and I took our youngest granddaughter to her first match a couple of weeks ago and she loved it. When YOUR team runs onto the ground to play they are the best team even when they are on the bottom of the Ladder. Supposedly AFL is the oldest codified football game, but I am not 100% sure about that. I have seen some serious injuries like broken bones etc but that’s the risk players take. My son and my grandson both play(ed) from 6-7 years old. The game is great because it is so fast and the best games are when the lead changes back and forth between both teams. The sound of 90,000+ people on the edge of their seat is unbelievable. If a player grabs the ball out of the air when it has been kicked and it hasn’t bounced on the ground it is a “mark”. The player can stop and take a kick or play on. If you kick the ball through the centre posts from anywhere on the ground (it can even bounce on the ground over the line off a foot) and no one has touched the ball with a hand, it is a Goal (G) and worth 6 points. If the ball hits the centre posts, goes between the side post and a centre post or is touched with a hand before going through the centre posts it is a Behind (B) and worth 1 point. When looking at the scores the first number is the G (x6) then B (x1) = Total example 10 + 6 = 66 People don’t carry guns here so unless they are a serious criminal with a an illegal gun, nothing is going to happen. If you are aggressive, drunk, swearing there is a phone number you can call and the trouble maker is removed by the police. There are bag checks before entering the grounds to make sure there is no trouble.

The Adelaide Crows are currently sitting at 8th on the ladder after round 9. There are 18 teams and 24 rounds before the finals. The top 8 teams at the end of 24 rounds play off in the finals series. There's a long way to go yet!

The first crowd rush was due to Buddy Franklins 100th goal. It’s tradition for fans to storm the field when a player kicks 100 goals in a season. At the 9:00 mark pay attention to the time remaining. The game consists of 4 quarters, so the Fremantle goal basically sealed the game for them at their oppositions home ground and sent them to the 2nd last week of finals, the preliminary finals.

That was a great reaction. It's awesome to see you understand and enjoy the spirit of the game even before learning all the rules. There are only 2 instances when fans run on to the ground. 1. When a player kicks their 100th goal in a single season. 2. When a player kicks their 1000th of their whole career. These moments don't happen very often at all an the AFL bosses don't fans on the field for all the possible dangers you mentioned. They announce huge fines for invading the pitch every time it looks like a player might reach one of those milestones to try and discourage it. From the footage you can see that never works and there's always an unspoken agreement between fans to just be there and experience it for the joyous moment that it is.

Our game is a funny one. Despite looking like a mix of rugby, basketball, hockey and soccer it's actually older then all of them. It was developed to keep cricket players fit in the offseason which is why the field is so big, it's a cricket oval. For scoring a goal is kicking it between the to big posts in the middle. If you kick the ball between the big post and one of the smaller outside posts or you hit one of the big posts it's called a behind and worth a single point. A single team's score will then look something like 12.8.80 which would be 12 goals, the second number are the behinds, with the last one being the total score. The bouncing of the ball you see is basically the same as dribbling in basketball, you're allowed to run with it 15 metres or about 16 yards or it's a penalty. The punching of the ball is called a handball and it's the only way you can get rid of the ball other then kicking it. If you throw the ball or drop the ball it's a turnover. The other main thing you're seeing is what is called mark which is where if the ball is kicked and travels 15 metres and you catch it on the full you can either play on or stop and take a free kick. The only other real main thing I think left to describe is the tackling. It has to be between the shoulders and the waist, any contact with the head or anything around the legs is considered a trip and would be a free kick. There are some other rules but that's basically the basics of it.

Three of the great AFL origin myths in the first three sentences. Rugby is older, cricket had nothing to do with its development, and the original rules had a rectangular field.

Those two teams that collapsed tied on 68points each, are Collingwood and St Kilda. They had just played over two hours of grand final football match (equivalent of Super Bowl). The rules at that time meant no time on, they had to come back and replay the grand final the next weekend. Only the third time and last time in history a AFL Grand final was drawn.

Loved watching you react to this. AFL is an amazing game, I went to my first game at age 61. The atmosphere and passion of the fans is something to see. The beauty of it is though is the passion of the teams, who play the game, but also the respect they have for their fans as well.

Perhaps you should have gone with Brad's video - it probably would have expmained the game beforehand 😅 Its different 😆❤ I love this game ❤

G'day mate , this is Oz and the best footy game in the world, so many skills, bouncing that ball every 15 meters while running flat out, some of these blokes can kick 70 meters, yeah 300 feet, that's from one end to the 50 yard line on the other end of an NFL field, spring boarding off an opponent or your own team member is a thing, and zero protection, cheers mate good reaction, now you have the Crows guernsey you have to watch more.

Australian football was invented in the late 1850s Sydney started out as South Melbourne, but were relocated to Sydney in the early 1980s. What a great for the Crows? Might I suggest Jordan Dawson's goal after the siren during the Showdown? one the great moments for a young side like the Crows.

Hey Nick, these may be the hi lights, but check out AFL Biggest Hits Ever to see how really rough things can get. You'll be in for a shock. The 2 teams have goal posts each end of the oval. Each quarter the teams change direction. Basically you have to get the ball down your end and through the posts. If you kick the ball through the middle two posts it is a goal which counts for 6 points, while the posts either side count for one point. Players have to bounce the ball when they run with it. If you have the ball, another player can tackle you for it, so you need to get rid of it fast to a team mate or the referee will give to the guy who tackled you. The game can get really rough at times, but it's very fast and exciting to watch.😃

The VFL/AFL started in 1897 as a breakaway league from the VFA. The SANFL of South Australia and the WAFL of Western Australia are also older competitions than the VFL/AFL

The Circlular line painted around the goal posts is 50 meters, 54 yards, away from the goal. So a lot of goal kicks in here were over 54 yards long.

Yes fantastic to see you watch our game. They are regarded as the fittest athletes on earth. An average midfielder is 6’3” and runs 15-16kms a game while marking(catching) the ball, tackling, bumping, hand passing and kicking for nearly 2hrs of game time. The statistics are incredible

The "Best and Fairest" player is selected each year by the umpires, and receives The Brownlow Medal. It's difficult to select the best ever because there are so many to pick from since 1859 when the game began.

There are 4 goal posts, the 2 big ones in the middle and 2 small ones on the out like this iIIi. If the ball is in the air and goes in between the 2 big ones, it's a goal which is 6 points. If the ball goes inbetween the large and small, hits a goal post or goes inbetween any of the posts on the ground, its a single point. When the ball is kicked and any player marks (catches) the ball, the play can stop momentarily so the player with the ball can choose where to kick or handball it for a chance of a goal or better placement of a goal. The player can also choose to play-on, which means just keep running with the ball. When running with the ball, it needs to be bounced while running and has to contact the ground every few seconds, otherwise its a travelling foul which means a free kick to the opposing team. If a player kicks or handballs the ball out of bounds, its also a free kick to the opposing team. If there is contact made without possession of the ball, its a free kick to the team of the transgressed. Interestingly, AFL was origionally created for cricket players to keep fit during the winter months, as Cricket is a summer sport, where AFL is a winter sport. It is one of the most brutal and physically demanding sports in the world! I hope this helps, its a bit of a difficult sport to get your head around. Love to see you in the land of Aus one day!

Yes the clock was counting up into the red of overtime then the siren went off and it was over.

6 points for a goal (through the 2 middle posts) 1 point for a behind (through the posts either side of 2 middle posts) 1 point for a "rushed behind" which is a defender carrying or handballing the ball through any of their own posts and 1 point for a ball that goes through the 2 middle posts if the ball is touched by a defender before it goes through "touched off the boot". The goal area is a 50 meter radius hence term "inside the 50". You are not permitted to tackle around the legs nor are you permitted to "trip" a player. If you catch the ball anywhere on the field that has travelled at least 15 meters you are awarded a "mark" and play stops until you play the ball by either a kick or a handball.

Most of these "plays" are not necessarily special because of the kick or catch. These are special because of the context. Grand final win, first final in 40 years..1000 goals Etc.

Just so you know the bare basics. The two big middle posts is a goal.....that's 6 points. If it misses that, and goes between one of the two big middle posts and one of the outer smaller posts, it is only 1 point. The ball must be kicked through to count as a goal. When the ball is kicked, and it a caught (marked) by another player, without having been touched by anybody else first, a free kick is awarding to the player marking the ball. There are also rules of tackling etc. It's a very rough game and lots of injuries and players who play for many years often leave as walking wrecks with bad knees, bad backs, brain impairments from head injuries etc. But it's fun to watch, and that's all that counts to us Aussies LOL

Our footballers are generally quite tough and resilient. They're put through quite a gruelling training regime at the gym. I have so much admiration for their resilience 💪

So glad you did this. Once you understand the ins and outs of the sport you'll be hooked. The AFL have a rules video on KZread, which I highly recommend watching before anything else. The next one after that (in response to your question about injuries) should be any AFL biggest hits compilation. Enjoy your decent into the AFL rabbit hole. EDIT: The rules video is actually tailored to an American audience (it was an attempt to expand interest in the sport overseas) so it draws parallels and makes references to sports/concepts you'd be familiar with. Again, would highly recommend watching before looking at any more AFL clips.

We celebrate together! We have nothing to be scared of! No gun has ever been brought to an AFL game (that I know of!)…..everyone there is either ecstatic their team won…..or looking forward to next week, when ‘their’ team will do better. Personally….I love the celebration no matter which team won ‘this week/year’…..everyone has to have a ‘turn’….ours is coming! :-)

Someone may have mentioned this already but the ground invasion usually occurs when a player kicks his 100th goal of the season. Not many players achieve this feat

Aussie footy (AFL) I read somewhere that Aussies (adult and kids) are pretty much the only ones that can run with a footy while bouncing it like that, I watch the kids and they are doing this from a very young age(with differing levels of success) but by the time they hit their teens it has become second nature to them, my grandchildren don’t even think about what they are doing, it just becomes so natural for them, even when they are just walking they’re all the time bouncing the footy and talking/joking around but they don’t miss a trick, the footy goes down and just arrives back in their hands for them to continue on their way with no interruption to the conversation. Same with them kicking the footy up to themselves..yep just goes up and comes back down to them…they don’t realise how coordinated/eye/hand/ball shape/weight and motor skills they have..like I said just 2nd nature to them.

I think the video “What is AFL?” would be the perfect introduction to AFL.

If you catch the ball on the full from a kick, it's called a "mark". This applies anywhere on the ground. The umpire automatically blows his whistle to signify a "free kick" to you (ie, you can stop on the spot and take a kick without being tackled). However if you choose, you can "play on" and immediately handball or kick the ball to another player. There is often a tactical advantage to quickly play on even though you have been awarded a free kick, so you see this happen quite a lot with attacking teams.

So much you weren't able to appreciate due to you not knowing the rules the players, the history, game situation and context, but well done for giving it a watch and trying to get it. For example, The guy in the suit walking out onto the field was the coach of the winning grand final team in 2004. In previous few years they made finals but failed to win it. The were labeled chokers, that's what all the pulling neck tie theatrics was about, basically a big up yours to all the critic's, Don Scott in particular!!

Should definitely react to a What is afl vid for a better idea of the rules. The video isn't perfect, and it's tough to explain AFL cause there are a lot of unique rules, but I think an understanding of the basics helps with these videos

That reference to 72 years was the time frame between premierships for the Swans, the team in red and white. We have had some great players, one was Gary Ablett Snr, wonderful goal kicker (6pointd), miss the goal, 1point. His son Gary Ablett jnr played in two grand finals and won Best and Fairest (for the whole season). They both played for Geelong but Junior went on to play for Gold Coast sons. Every team has its star(s), you would need to Google each one. That goal by Buddy Franklin, (when he played for Hawthorn) was his 100th, he went on to be leading goal kicker for Sydney.

We don't have a single champion like the US would point out, we have plenty of Champions that have played this game throughout the eras, and we just love our game. No need to single anyone out, but there is a Best and Fairest awarded called the Brownlow Medal each year to one deserving player voted by the umpires.

You cannot throw the ball but you are allowed to punch or slap it around to move it with your hands, so a special pass called a handball is a key part of the game. A handball is like a underarm volleyball serve, hold it with one hand and punch with the other. Other than that Its basically a kick and catch game. If you catch the ball from a kick, you earn a free kick and no one can tackle you. If you pick the ball off the ground or receive a handball you can be tackled.

Distance from goal makes no difference, centre posts are a goal (6 points), outer posts are a point. But it has to be kicked. Taking a mark (catching it on the full) means you get to take your kick without anyone being able to tackle you, unless you play on. That "came up behind him like a librarian" was when the opposition player came from behind and touched the ball off the boot. A touched ball isn't a goal, it's a point, so he saved/spoiled the goal. That comment came from Dennis Commetti, one of the best. We are lucky with our passionate commentators.

This is unfortunately the wrong video to start with. This is nostalgia for the fans. There are great introduction videos around and even great compilations of “marks” (those elaborate catches you saw that give a player a free kick). Good on you for sticking with it.

Also, just to cover some of the moments in this video and why they're significant: 12:11 was significant because the player kicking the goal was a professional rugby player who had only recently decided to try his hand at AFL and there he is kicking a game-winning goal; 24:28 was called the 'miracle on grass' because the team that won (Brisbane Lions) came back from a 52-point deficit in the third quarter and won with a clutch goal right on the final siren. 28:32 was significant because it was Buddy Franklin's 1000th career goal (yes, 1000. That's not a typo). And they don't usually allow crowds onto the ground like that, but this was a once-in-a-lifetime milestone and security never stood a chance anyway :) That was only last year and there were a few minor incidents in the chaos - a spectator took off with the game ball, a couple of players got pushed off the ground by the crowd and had to make their way back to their team rooms by exiting the stadium and walking all the way around...but I think what was most impressive was that someone actually managed to sprinkle their grandma's ashes on the stadium grass in all that chaos (grandma was a passionate Sydney Swans fan apparently). It was complete madness for quite some time.

The fans are not allowed to run onto the pitch, but his achievement was pretty unheard of and there's no way security could hold everyone back. They knew it was going to happen.

the middle area is 6 points and-the side 2 is equivalent to 1 point there are 4 quarters and a 5 minute break between each quarter except between quarter 2 and 3 which is a 30 minute break each quarter is 28 minutes, but it can go longer, after each goal there is a centre bounce where the 2 ruck-men tap the ball towards their teammates, players can get a free kick for a high tackle (anything above the shoulders) a mark is where a player catches a ball that has been kicked. you can handball the ball which is passing it, if you run too far with the ball its travel and a free kick is awarded to the other team. there are 24 rounds not including semi finals and the grand final.

G'day, The game of AFL (Australian Football League) is over 100 years old and was called the VFL (Victoria Football League) until 1990. There are 18 teams in the league and 19th on the way soon. The Game is played with 18 players on the field and reserves on the bench for interchange to swap out or cover injuries. The AFL game is a multi skilled game and its origins come from Irelands Gaelic football but in the main difference is the AFL use an oval shaped ball and not a soccer ball. The AFL game uses skills from Basketball, Soccer, Rugby & Gaelic football. To start the game the players will try to tap the ball to a team mate just like a basketball tap off, then the aim of the game is to kick a goal but AFL doesn't have soccer goals it has 4 goal posts 2 tall posts in the middle and 2 shorter posts either side. If you kick the ball through the 2 taller posts (the middle ones) you get 6 points and if the ball goes between one of the tall posts and the shorter posts (not the Middle posts) you only get 1 point.To move the ball down field to score you can kick it, handball and run it. If you run it downfield you must bounce the ball every 15 meters to allow play to continue you then can decide if you want to kick it or handball it to a team mate or you can have a kick at the goals yourself. Only kicking the ball through the goals will result in gaining 6 points, if you miss the main goal and it goes to the side it will result in 1 point for your team. There are half circle markings on the field to indicate 50 meters at each end of the oval and a square in the middle of the field to restart the game every time a goal is kicked, players aren't allowed inside the square until the Umpire has bounced or thrown the ball in the air to restart the game then the players can go inside the square to attack the ball. If a player has the ball you are allowed to tackle him to try get the ball back but if you make contact with his head he will get a free kick on the mark where you tackled him. Every time you catch the ball after someone has kicked it to you the umpire will blow his whistle to confirm that it was a Mark (catch) the player marking the ball will either play on by kicking or hand balling to his team mate. If a player marks the ball inside the 50 meter zone he will most likely have a kick at goal, the best kickers are normally positioned inside the 50 meter zone and they are there to kick goals and win games. Any player can kick a goal from any where not just the guys inside the 50 zone. When the the fans run onto the field it's normally because a player has reached a milestone, like kicking 100 goals in a season or 1000 goals in their career. Every team in the AFL has superstars in their side but only very best players will get 1 million per season. The Highest payed player in the AFL is Lance (Buddy) Franklin #23 and he signed with the Sydney Swans for a record 10 million Australian dollars on a 9 year deal. Australia now has a professional women's league AFLW and is shown on TV, they play by the same rules as the men do but their season isn't as long as the mens competition.The AFL game is mostly played in Australia with Australian players but we now have International players, African, Irish, American playing at the elite level. I've seen a lot of Americans making reaction videos to Aussie footy but they always watch the "Biggest AFL fights" so it was nice to see this show with the "Greatest moments" which is more like a regular day at the footy. Big fights are pretty rare these days so I don't think it's a good comparison. I forgot to add to my previous comment that if the ball is touched by any players as it's going through the post, it is a point. It must come off the boot, not touched and go through the big posts to get the 6pts. Collingwood won the Grand Final this year and are the 2023 Premiership Team 🎉

One of the best Grand Finals in recent history was in 2018. This game had everything that there is to love about Aussie Rules. Heroes and villains (depending on who you barrack for), excitement, drama and a finish deserving of the best soap operas. You might have to get it piece by piece through youtube, but it's worth it.

Aussie Rules has been played for over 160 years, the VFL began expanding their competition from 1982; then changed their name to thr AFL in 1990. So it would be hard to pick the best player of all-time, due to the other states of South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania having successful competitions over those times. Each period over the progress of Australian Football has had there best players, each with their own attributes and abilities. If you check out the Australian Football Hall of Fame you will find players from all eras.

Always tricky picking a new team but as a Crows fan I would say Adelaide is a good fit for you. Australia's fifth biggest city, people whose careers started here who you will know are Sia, Hilltop Hoods, Guy Sebastian, Paul Kelly and Jimmy Barnes.
