Google Stadia's one piece of hardware that was created for the streaming platform is the new controller. Since its release it has been seen as a nightmare to take apart, and after seeing Gamers Nexus split the controller in two with a dremel I figured it was going to be a difficult tear down. Today let's take a look inside the controller and see what makes it so difficult to take a part.

9:19 for the actual teardown. "All the controllers we know jammed together." You forgot the Mega Drive 6 buttons, the Arcade 6 buttons and the Trident, to name a minor few. To those saying that Spawn made it look easy, don't forget that Gamers Nexus had to basically destroy it to see what was inside (and where the clips were and how big they were) and set a good course to others to be able to nondestructively open the thing. That said, I too praise Spawn's ability and expertise as well and will be using the "clip holder technique" more often from now on. I could safely assume that Google wanted the controller to be very sturdy. I don't really know why, since many other controllers are much flimsier and easier to take apart, and no one complained for their rigidity or such (as far as I can tell or at least about the major console manufacturer companies). I also assume that 1- no customer was meant to disassemble it; 2- RMA (if ever) must be nonexistent (as is Google customer support according to BeatEmUps review); 3- could be prone to be hacked since it hosts a Cortex chip (and that must be the most exciting part).

Trucker Sloth agreed. Instead, they took the time and care with the controller and launched the service half-baked with a model that, to be completely honest, is a complete rip off. Google should’ve had all the features promised at launch and had more actual exclusives instead of games that you could easily get second-hand for half the price (I’m from the UK and I got Red Dead Redemption 2 at £22 pre-owned). But most importantly, the business as a service is the main chunk that makes this a rip off. Google should have either put a subscription fee per month and made the games free or just priced the games for half of what they were at launch for everyone. Instead they tagged on the subscription fee and charged full price for the games, unless you were a Pro member, in which case you would get discounts. I’m never buying into Stadia because I’m happy with having the hardware, but if Google want this to succeed, they need to meet the standards they promised and ditch the current business model. And even if the Base edition is free, they should never have even had multiple editions to begin with.

I've cut the trigger-springs in half on all my Xbox controllers. Selling a controller with very light actuation on the analog triggers is good, stiff springs hurt my fingers in racing games, and to some extent shooters as well (I also cut the weights in half on my Impact Trigger rumble).

I honestly thought you would not be able to put this controller back together after reading your "Uh oh" Tweet and you mentioning the reason for the GameStop sponsorship. Glad it all worked out. Got tense towards the end as your music cued while reassembling.

Something truly poetic about a well-built controller that can really only be used with one of the worst services currently available. I mean we'll see where we're at in 6 months, but considering all the problems stadia has had before launch and how piss poor it's been currently to this point including a bunch of missing features they prominently promised, if within six months it isn't considerably better I'd say it's doomed. (Though considering Google's track record I pretty much have no problem saying that right now)

I ve spent roughly 200$ for a modified ps4 controller with a tactile d-pad and buttons. It is perfect for fighting games (fighting game pros do actually use controller with tactile d-pads) and plattformer (Celeste). I would be so happy if nintendo or othter console makers would make a controller with a decent d-pad

Externally this controller is really similar to a NVIDIA shield 2019 controller. The differences I noticed are a USB-B port, better grip, different center buttons and the thing is easier to disassemble. Personally I really like it's clicky d-pad.

the difference between cheap joysticks and quality joysticks is the way they detect input, cheaper controllers I've used from power a and hori have two issues in common, when you release the joystick quickly it detects a full motion to the opposite side, so if you release it from the left quickly it detects a full motion to the right when it gets to the center and the other issue is that after the deadzone at the center there's another ring shaped dead zone at the edges(they detect a full range motion before the joystick is physically touching borders and by quite a bit), which makes them worse for shooters and games that require more precise movements.
