Google Stadia Controller Tear-Down & Disassembly Nightmare

Ойындар

This tear-down and disassembly of the Google Stadia controller is a shortened version of our 2-hour-long attempt at getting the controller open carefully. It didn't work.

We're working on our Google Stadia review next, but we had to first start with a tear-down of the controller since Google didn't send us an access code as promised. We ordered two Stadia controllers -- one left untouched -- and thought this would be easy. Unfortunately, because Google is obsessed with pretending it's Apple and hiding all screws for the device, it's not easy to disassemble the controller on the first try. It's all held together by massive clips, and we spent about an hour and a half trying to carefully dismantle the controller without any physical damage. We ended up giving up and just using a more destructive means of opening it.

Grab our GN Modmat work surface here! store.gamersnexus.net/ This is really heavily cut down in the beginning. We spent about an hour and a half trying to carefully disassemble things, but since the device only has one screw and otherwise relies upon massive plastic clips, it's very difficult to press those clips externally while still preserving the surface finish of the controller. Google will probably just throw these in the trash when they do RMAs, as it'd be easier and it seems nearly impossible to access the inside without any cosmetic damage.

I think you do the clips on the interior of the handles then when those pop you torque the interior edge of the handles to pull the outside clips away from the lower shell and it should pop off. EDIT: Think of it like the plastic bezels around laptop LCD screens. Pull up from the inner side to free the clips on the outer side

This fact disturbs me because I was just cleaning my XBOX 360 controller and all it took was a screwdriver to remove 7 screws. Just imagine you just want to clean the contacts inside the controller but you need a dremel to disassemble it? Unbelievable! I don't even think you can even put it back together.

So Steve briefly mentions ease of assembly, and that is kind of the problem here. I work in automotive manufacturing and I can see the real problem; it was in fact designed for quick solid assembly and not much else. Working in assembly, I also sometimes pick up overtime in repair, and let me tell you, one does not equal the other. The intent here was "Push the top part down on the bottom, drive a screw, finished product" This falls apart when workers or lord forbid customers have to start jamming tools into seams to break clips. Clips exist for the assembler, screws exist for everyone after.

@Liam O'Brien for these mammoth clips the Jimmy tool is pretty good, as long as you know where to pry. I'm mostly used to them in much bigger things (sun microsystems keyboards to be exact), where you have a larger gap to stick the tool into, as well as a straight edge they are aligned with, instead of them just sort of hanging out a bit inboard the device. If there also is glue in the seam you are screwed tho. Short of actually heat cycling it with ln2, as long as you can't get the glued surfaces apart, not even just hitting it with the hot air will help you.

@@jd2792 Stadia is more convenient. To get a gaming PC you have to do a lot of research trying to find which one fits your needs, buy it, hook it up, buy a game, download it etc. After that the PC will be a PC and it will wear down and need to be updated/replaced with better hardware that meets the requirements of the newest games. ^^^ none of this will exist with Stadia. All you have to do is buy the game... That's it! Now your instantly in the game playing on high settings and you will never have to worry about updating anything. That in itself is amazing but Stadia offers so much more. Ex... 1. Any screen, any time, you're not planted to your desk. 2. If you are playing a game with your friend on a TV you will both have the highest settings 3. There will NEVER be any hackers 4. If you are playing a game on the TV and are kicked off/ want to move then you can seamlessly switch to another device at the exact moment you left off. 5. You can capture a moment in a game and share that moment with other people. They can go to that exact moment in your game and play from there. 6. Game demos will be available on KZread for people to try games for free And to think the only requirement for all this is good internet? Why is everyone complaining? Sure Stadia has had a rocky start and doesn't have everything yet, just give it a little time and some optimism.

@@kommentator1157 The comment was about Stadia 😂 But even if you want to change that to include the rest, no I couldn't. You could go with Apple, which is even worse, or another 3rd party but Google has made their products mainly open source and available for anyone to develop on. Since nothing in life is free you know that they have to earn money by making products. When they don't do that with their OS, Maps etc etc it's very well understood that they will make that by collecting data. I understand your sentiment but I haven't seen them do anything malicious. Hell I don't even remember a breach of conduct or misuse of personal information from them. I guess it just boils down to this, you take the good with the bad to get something you want, for the price you're willing to pay. Essentially you are getting a fully fledged OS for the price of Linux. If you want to talk about the Huawei situation that is the government, not Google.
