Sony PlayStation 5 DualSense Controller Tear-Down & Disassembly, ft. Dremel

Ойындар

This tear-down of the Sony PlayStation 5 DualSense controller shows the inner workings of the device, primarily focusing on the cool trigger resistance mechanism.
Sponsor: Drop's ENTR Mechanical Keyboard (dro.ps/gamersnexus-pc37x-entr...)
A controller was harmed in the making of this video, but it was worth it. We'll be working on other PS5 content soon. In this video, we're taking apart the DualSense controller to look at Sony's new hardware, including an impressively complex mechanism to provide resistance (sort of like force feedback) at the left and right trigger buttons. The PlayStation 5 controller is the most internally advanced we've ever taken apart.

Thanks for doing this teardown. I'm very excited to see if the haptic feedback feature comes to any games on PC as well (PC ports or original titles). I am planning to get one of these from family for christmas so I can start playing more platformers and other things like the spyro remastered collection, the same way I did when I was a kid with a PS2 clone USB controller and BLEEM with some ripped PS1 game disks. Using a DS4 for now but it belongs to my sister, and she'll want hers back eventually when she can have friends over again lol. looks like you can service the whole thing with just a soldering iron and an ifixit kit as well, which is pretty good if you ask me. Not counting the rumble motor because that was definitely a contained unit you cut into there

Looks to me like the rumble "motors" are very similar to a linear actuator, and the metal parts on the ends are springs, which mean that each one can vary not only in frequency but also in intensity, where older controllers have 2 offset weights of varying mass so they only have frequency and a low\high intensity option, and they're usually on opposite sides, meaning that left in high and right is low. This should really allow them to do some interesting things with their "rumble" functionality. I see someone used the term "transducer" lower on the page, and I suppose that these are quite similar to the transducers used to make the beeps for most electronics, just much larger and presumably lower frequency.

  • @xXSinForLifeXx

They are actually voice coils. They can be used as speaker drivers because of their large frequency range - they're precise enough that developers could have the Dualsense output audio without using the speaker if they wanted to. In fact Sony engineers even mentioned that in the API the haptics can receive audio as input, for maximum precision.

Hopefully people will replace their battery instead of buying brand new controllers. PS3 controllers have become extremely difficult to find, because people have been tossing them when the battery stopped holding a charge. And yet, while it isn't meant to be user-replaceable, the battery very easy to replace. Same with the PS4 controller. Although the best in class are Nintendo, since the Wii U gamepad, Wii U pro Controller and Switch Pro controller all feature batteries that is user-replaceable. In fact both generations of Pro controller are using the same battery as in the GBA SP.

They're quite nice, by the looks of it they will be able to make very complex and detailed rumble feedback. They look like they will also have a resonant frequency for when they just want the controller to shake around. Certainly a step up from an off centre weight on a motor. Not sure about the direction they are actuating in though, I would have thought up/down in the hand would have provided more feedback.

That two metal pieces in the haptic feedback motor are so called flextures (or compliant mechanism) basically a type of axial spring (in this form) . Meaning that what was suspended between them was probably a stack of magnets (on second thought probably works just with a metal stack to) . That will be moved by a coil inside the outside housing.

You are first who disassembly the "rumble motor". And unlike others who opened the controller, you found it was not a DC motor. It looks like a system that uses the electromagnetic field not to rotate but to move the mass sideways or along the axis of symmetry. Thank you very much!!! . I really wanted to see what was inside

Hi Steve! I'm pretty sure that the sheet you're talking about is just a conductive membrane like you would see in membrane keyboards. Hmm doesn't look too bad to me. Glue is just a double-sided tape and only on the rumble motor, which is unlikely to fail. The leads to those motors are soldered on, which is not too difficult to resolder. And I don't I would be able to fix the motors anyway. I thought we'd need a dremel to remove the frame/cover at first ....

Great Job! I really didn't expect the triggers to use a ring and pinion in for the resistance. At first sight it looked like a sun and worm gear (which would make more sense in my head). But now I have a much better idea what the difference between "haptic" and "rumble" is. Looks like it's just more weights for different vibration strength and frequency. Thanks again.

21:00 That is a worm drive, based on the Archemedes screw. Looks like its changing the angle of rotation and slowing the speed from the motor to the trigger assembly. Worm gears are great in high torque but also have increased friction. What kind of plastic are the gears made out of? The screw should be slightly harder than the gear and a thin coat of lubricant or low friction material on the screw wouldn't be a bad idea.

The part you refer to in the trigger as a "plastic screw" is a worm gear. I work in a company where we specialize in producing and running the tooling for high tolerance parts like that. The molds are somewhat complicated as they need to rotate at the same pitch of the gear to be able to eject it when the mold opens and they can have anywhere from 4 to 16 cavities that all need to move in unison. Neat stuff for sure.
