Built in 1833 for the Stockton & Darlington Railway (S&DR), the Goods Shed briefly served as Darlington's railway station before being superseded by the nearby North Road Station.
The building was transformed into a Goods Shed to handle luggage and freight for the S&DR, and latterly as a storage facility for the railways. The Goods Shed fell out of use with North Eastern Railways and in the mid 20th century became a home Darlington Railway Preservation Society.
Between 2022 and 2023 the Goods Shed was redeveloped for Hopetown Darlington, the new visitor attraction celebrating and promoting Darlington's 200 year railway heritage.
The Goods Shed now forms the main entrance to the attraction and houses a café, shop, live model railway, split-flap display clacker board and a railway-themed light show feature.
