I'll NEVER not cry at the ending of this movie! Love it! Definately in my top 20! No one but Richard Dreyfus & Marsha Mason could have played these characters. Basically every year from 1970 to around 1986, it was a stunning roster of releases. Those two decades were a golden era. Before CGI and the corporate machine of movie-making ruined everything. I've always loved this movie -- I was 17 when it came out. I met Richard Dreyfuss once -- he was doing a performance of "The Devil's Disciple" for radio in Washington, DC, and a friend of mine who was an arts critic in DC took me to the broadcast. It was amazing. I got to talk to Dreyfuss beforehand -- we had a wonderful conversation. I asked if he would consider doing Cyrano de Bergerac, which is my favorite play, and he thought it was a great idea -- even walked back over a second time to discuss it with me! I am an actress (not an international star, but an actress) and I've always wanted to play Roxanne. I'm too old now, but I would have loved to have played opposite Dreyfuss as Cyrano -- he would have rocked that role!

I mean.... Wow! The Goodbye Girl was just one of those heartwarming feel good movies of that time period. It also helps that I was alive back then so I can really relate to the time period. 1977, I would have been 8 years old. You know a movie is fantastic when you never seen it until well into your 40's and it was powerful. A movie in so many ways represents a time period and as time goes on people change and tastes change but that movie remains that time, that era, that innocents, that cinematography. It's 2015 now but 1977 reached through time and space to touched my heart...... I'm a black man blubbering at the end of this movie! LOL! I had to do some research on it and I watched the clip here on KZread of Dryfuss accepting his Academy Award for best actor and I was left feeling kinda bad. If one thing would have been moved differently, if one person would have been changed it would have been a completely different movie! It was the perfect cast and the perfect acting on everyone's part that made that movie what it is. There should be awards given for entire casts when a movie is this great. What a great movie. I'll always love these kinds of movies. God Bless....

Little Lucy was so wise cracking during the whole movie, but that last shot of her with the bike in the hall you realize that she's still so vulnerable. I guess she felt a little like "the goodbye girl" too . . . another man walking out of her life. I don't think she was that connected to her mother's previous boyfriend, Tony, but she had a real connection with Elliot. She let her walls down and she got hurt. (well at least the movie did have a happy ending because Elliot proved at the end that he was in it for the long haul).

To Mary Haynes: I also love Goodbye Girl, and I cry every single time I watch the movie. I also cry whenever I watch Love Story and Endless Love. ❤❤😢😢

Irony at 1:10 , he won the Oscar for best actor for this movie .
Great show, and one of the best endings EVER!

I mean....

Never has an ending song identified with a movie as much as this one.
Finally in the late 70's some feel-good movies came out, like this one and Oh God, a welcome change from just a few years before like The Exorcist.
One of my all time favorite romantic comedies. The ending is priceless, and the title song by David Gates is icing on the cake.
The most wonderful memories💓
That's such an amazing movie .I can watch that movie over and over again .
I saw this movie on the plane back and was crying during this scene....got back home and immediately searched this scene on youtube....makes me just want to fall in love
A very touching scene that's always meant a lot to me... I'll never forget the time I met a love like this from another state. He had to go back home...but he left his guitar. I remember I cried when I thought of this scene. I married him. I divorced him too. Sometimes goodbye does mean forever, but there's something in a woman's heart that always holds out hope for new love...

i remember seeing this film on HBO in the early 80s. i recorded it on VHS, and i had such a thing for this movie for a while. that's when i was barely in my teens. i just happened to think of this movie tonite, so here i am. :)) i find myself comforted by the memories of seeing this movie for the 1st time. feels good to revisit those times in my mind. :))
My favorite movie of all time! Thanks for sharing the final scene!
"I love you!" " Nevermind that! You're rusting my guitar!" 😂
I loved the movie, and the song, and the D. Gates lived close to us! hope they show it again!
Can we admit that Marsha Mason not getting the Best Actress award was a shame. She was so deserving.

I don’t know if she should win or not but I do think The Goodbye Girl should be Paula’s movie more than Elliot’s. She is the one who’s gone through the bigger transformation/growing in the movie even though Elliot is the flashier character.
remarkable scene and touchable song from "The goodbye girl"

I love this Movie especially the end trailer.Always brings me to Happy Tears!
Richard Dryefuss is our Laurence Olivier, the thinking man's actor. I have fond memories of watching his earlier movies from Jaws, The Goodbye Girl, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Sometimes your earlier work turns out to be your best.

And he won the academy award of course!! 🙈😍
can't believe how hard I cried towards the end....I think it was how good the movie was...then the song made me let loose.....
I'd absolutely hate to live in a city like that
Goodbye girl, Mr. Holland's opus, Close encounters, just all time (and timeless) movies that touch the heart with a common denominator...Richard Dreyfuss.
We should all be lucky enough to find someone to love like that . I'm still waiting
The goodbye girl. 0ne of the best movies ever!!!! So many great lines. Love Richard love Marsha. Love the kid.
"you are Rusting my guitar!" ........ha ha ha..... so funny :)
All your life you've waited for love to come & stay....
One of all time favorite movies. The Good-Bye Girl
Every time always makes me cry! The song and the end after he calls from the phone booth downstairs where their relationship started and tells her to restring his guitar! I love it! I like the cast together. I think Quinn played the part beautifully and the song was perfect.
Absolute great movie. Neil Simon really was a genius. Barefoot in the Park.

Hahahahahahahahaha.....from his sharks(animals)cage as the late Mr Robert Shaw put it aptly to the telephone booth(cage)....and still in water in both scenes. As Mr Shaw says wryly to Mr Dreyfuss..."You're going in the water with that....our sharks in the water!!!"
Elliot tells Paula that even if his plane crashes in the rain storm, he’s still coming back to her The movie ends with David Gates singing that beautiful theme song for the movie. “ All your life you’ve waited for a love to come and stay, and now that I have found you, you must not slip away….”
Best way to make a promise to the one your in love with, call them and tell them to restring your guitar and know for sure that you'll be back

She was in Audrey rose too.
I watched the movie 2x,and this is the part I liked most..
Love this
Im crying...
At 1:47 , i didn't know that would be my future when i saw this movie. My son was 4 when i decided to separate from my overworked exhausted wife (modern working women). The hardest part was not seeing my child everyday, and it broke my heart a 100's times and more. From that time, i could never trust the future, the future is the enemy.
One of the best love story,
I will always love this movie
I've never seen this movie. I suppose I blew the ending for myself, lol! Ha ha! Now, to watch the whole movie to get the back story to the final scene.

Richard Dreyfus such a kind individual. i.e. Gives all of the Paps a few minutes. On Rodeo Drive i.e. anytime Richard's dining/shopping. Then they take shots at Richard on TMZ. (if a celeb interview/sighting plays on TMZ et al - it's worth between 2 and 5K for the individual Pap) i.e. Richard putting a few thousand in their pockets - and for 20 seconds of their time.
Who cares about his scarf!! Hubby & I saw this movie in 1977 one year after we married at age 17 and 19. Here we are almost 37 years together! My favorite movie ever!
