If you go to tractor supply you can buy 3 rubber horse stall mats 3ft x 4ft I glue them together and just use spray paint to make a few targets good low budget target especially for the size.

I like the idea of a thrown target. It also has the whole easy disposal thing going for it. Spent foam targets are going to sit in a landfill for a long time (unless you take a sawzall to them to make bag target filling), but the straw target will break down quick. While not a long-lasting target, the movement and "chuckability" of it adds a fun factor to it like the little cube that the bigger targets don't necessarily have. Should probably use flou-flou arrows when shooting out of the air though. Nice review.

Thank you again for this series. You’re reviewing exactly the targets I’ve been looking at.

Straw traditionally rested on wooden stands, with two lugs sticking out at the bottom for the target to rest on. Targets swinging about aren't best for developing consistency. Also, I think you could 'stitch' the center back in with some string and curved needles. A disadvantage is if you are using field points on wood shafts, the straw stitching can catch behind the head and pull it off or jam.

I've had my wooden arrows catch on my 5-layer, but I just wiggle & twist as I pull.

A neighbor of mine just gave me this target after shooting one arrow at it. Didn't tell me why he was giving it to me, just said "Here have fun with this target. It ain't for me." I shot at it for about an 30 minutes (with a 50lb compound) and shot right through it. This target is great for kids - terrible for anything above 30lbs. I gave the target back to my neighbor.

I recently just bought a 5-layer target, but I haven't used it yet. I mostly use a foam mat target I built. I bought the 5-layer for mobile shooting at my friend's house and such.

Love your video series. As for the broken arrow. Kinda looks like a fatigue issue. I have had a handfull of carbon arrows fail after many shots. Most looked similar to that one on your straw target. Two years ago I had one disintegrate just after clearing my riser on my compound bow. I went back to aluminum shafts on compound bow after that. still prefer cedar shafts on my trad bows, which is the bulk of my shooting time

this was my first archery target, beginner inaccuracy combined with longer distance and historical bows meant i rarely hit the same place twice, got over 300 shots out of it!

I have one of those. Mine is a 5 layer, I think. I have mine on a old-school three-leg stand I built. I was bare-shaft tuning with my korean bow, and I started sending them through and across the floor lol

If I had this target, I would add a couple of old inner tubes at 60 & 120 degrees to get it to calm down more quickly.

I use one of these, 4 layer, 44# trad, 20 yards. I have it hanging on a 8" thick cardboard backstop. Been using it for months like that. Something cool I've noticed, If I miss the target and hit the carboard it makes a sharp "snap" sound. When I hit the target, the closer the center I hit, the deeper the sound. The edges give me "thump" and the center, where the most wear is gives a dull "thud". Most times I can tell there the arrow hit by the sound of the impact. Should be noted that I've been shooting regularly at this one since April. Lots of hits.

Thank you again! I was really curious about this one, too. I think I'll get one of these first and then maybe a Rinehart later. Using a straw target that is rated for a higher poundage than needed, say five layers plus for a 40 pound bow, should also exten the target lifetime a bit, no? Thanks and greetings from Sweden.

I use a bale of compressed straw it lasts for months and costs around $15

Cool video, a static setup on a tripod would also be interesting. Whether it makes a big difference without free swinging.

Loving these vids. There's a bunch of good foam targets for broadheads but they're all about the same, matrix, morrell, rinehart the list goes on. None of them are high volume targets if we consider high volume to start at something like 100 arrows a day for 4 or 5 days a week. The bags are great for your field points which will be the majority of your practice. You can get replacement covers for a lot of the yellow jacket bags, which you can find on sale at your big box stores from time to time. Stocking up when you come across a good deal is a decent way to save some money. The yellow jacket jy - 450 plus will take literally thousands of field points even after all 4 centers of the shooting faces are completely blown out and you can get them at most sporting good stores for around 80 bucks (as of right now fall 2023). After trying a ton of different targets over the years, I really don't see a need to go super exotic on or over think the foam target you want to use; unless you really want to try a particular one out for some reason or you're trying out a lot of new broadheads / really fine tuning new hunting set ups or something that. Looking forward to Kramer's thoughts at the end of this series, which is really awesome btw.

have you considered adding a bulldog doghouse target or bigshot iron man or any other high speed/crossbow targets to the series. they are really easy to pull from however im curious about durability.

An Amazon arrow backstop curtain behind any target is the trick to longevity. Works for me. Any target will last three times longer field points only.

Practicing for fred bear status huh? 😂 shooting targets out of the air. I remember watching his videos. Amazing archer. I was gonna say, backing the target up with something should extend the life of the target. Ive about got enough saved up to make an order. Im looking forward to it guys, have a blessed day! As an aside, my first compound was a bear whitetail 2 with a 40% let off.. that dates me huh?😂
