The Last Posh Frock Barbara tears her last 'posh frock'. Tom can't understand what the fuss is all about.

This episode really bothered me and I feel like the reason Barbara had a right to feel upset was just glossed over. It wasn’t really about the dress, it’s that Tom wasn’t treating her how she felt she deserved. And then when he said he loves her and the dress doesn’t matter, and threw that dinner for her, he spent the whole time flirting with another woman. But of course all is forgiven when he buys Barbara a dress.

You're quite right of course but this was the 1970's when men got away with being terrible chauvinists. To be honest, I was cringing when he said some of those things, I guess that things have improved somewhat.

Matt Osborne yeah I could kind of get that it was more accepted back then. But I felt like they were trying to take it in direction that that behaviour was wrong, with what Jerry said. They still kind of missed the point somewhat though. And yeah I was cringing immensely through the whole episode.

@Mark Jones not really. If someone did that to me it would be over. It shouldn’t be normalised in a show as something you should just accept. Or that women are as 2D as a dress is all they want and need. I like the show as a whole, but this episode was not good. Even Jerry was trying to say the right thing, but he still glossed over the important part.

I feel exactly the same...I'm loving watching these episodes again as I remember as a kid being entertained by Tom's manic energy and their relationship...it seemed funny and somehow comforting then...but my perception has obviously changed somewhat after going through puberty and a few relationships myself and now my view of Tom has declined dramatically and I now see him as frenetic, cantankerous, insensitive and completely self-absorbed! Haha! He does not deserve Barbera one bit and he is damn lucky to have her! She has every right to have left him long ago. Something interesting though is that, judging by the sensationalised notions that we are fed these days by social media that there is no difference between genders, these days a young person would in theory agree entirely with Tom...that girls and boys, men and women are EXACTLY the same in every respect and that Barbera is being completely irrational in how she feels and doesn't deserve any sympathy at all! Interesting huh? Kind of shows how warped and twisted things can become when people try to place a belief over reality.

It's a comedy - situations are often exaggerated. The characters of Tom and Barbara had a lot more equal balance in their relationship than many other husbands and wives in that era. You certainly do have a serious take on life.

Reading the comments and there's lots of anger directed at Tom, and quite rightly so. But Barbara is the real problem. She sacrificed herself for the manchild, to be his best friend, his pal, his "mate". She wanted a "quasi equality" rather than making him grow up and them having an actual child. Her femininity, her biology, is considered silly and superfluous, and she does that to herself. Just as so many women nowadays sacrifice their womanhood for being "one of the boys" and a career. This message has been pushed for so long, for so many years. No wonder we are in a mess.
