    tbh this movie is underrated bc people see it as a top gun regurgitation. the stories are similar but the film making genius that went into this is insane. this will always be one of my favorite movies.

    But it's not remotely a top gun anything. Tom Cruise character was modeled after Tim Richmond. Who came to nascar from open wheel. Seems Hollywood done Tim dirty just like nascar did by not mentioning this fact.

    When I was a kid I did view this movie as racings version of Top Gun… but it’s not and they both stand on their own. I was 10 years old in 1995 and got the best Xmas gift of my entire life when I got both Top Gun and Days of Thunder on VHS Lmao. We had just recently got TV and a VHS player for the first time at home so it was HUGE to me. Today my kids watch garbage on my iPad lol. Damn I sound old…

    @@bradsanders407 Agreed, I think it's a lazy take to just call it Top Gun on wheels. It's similar to most other action movies of the 80s and 90s but it has its own unique story and Robert Duvall took that film to the next level.

    Hanz Zimmer talking about writing the score was a great little insight. There are several points, which, for me, always evoke strong emotion and memories of watching this movie with my dad when it first came out. The first is when Harry is finishing up the first car, and then the music ramps up from that slow somber tone to the main theme style with that electric guitar lead hitting when you see the car on the track for the first time in the sunlight.. and then at the end where Cole is struggling whether or not to trust that he won't crash again through the smoke and again when the drums hit and the main theme drops upbeat with that guitar... I get choked up both times. My dad and I both loved this movie so much. He even would buy me the little diecast movie cars when we would stop at the Exxon when I would go to work with him that summer. I have the full set displayed on my wall. I wish I could tell him how much that all meant to 10-year-old me and how much it still means to 43-year-old me. And the weird thing is. Dad and I were never NASCAR fans. But we sure loved this movie.

    I'm french and fell in love with Nascar when I was 10 in the 90's... Unfortunately we didn't have access to Nascar races back in the day. My only enjoyment was racing magazine, very sporadically. I'll always remember the first day I watched DoT, It was everything I expected from a good racing movie; The feel of speed magically directed by the underrated Tony Scott, the connection between the driver and the crew chief, and the fear of death.... Lastly I'll tell you what, I watched this film 5 times in a row; just to begin with.

  • @1969EType
    @1969EType11 ай бұрын

    I've been a NASCAR fan since the late 1970s. The sport has changed a great deal since then and it's no coincidence that the release of "DOT" in 1990 also coincided with the start of the rise in national and global popularity of NASCAR that leveled off and has been on the wane since Dale Earnhardt's tragic death in 2001. NASCAR was huge during this time and "DOT" really helped kicked that off. Tom Cruise was, and still is, the kind of movie star that people will go and see no matter what the movie is about. "DOT" brought it legions of fans from all across America and the world. And there has never been a more welcoming sport and scene than NASCAR. And although the sport is not as popular now as it was in the 1990's, I am pleased to see that that welcoming spirit continues on to this day. If you are trackside and you get a flat tire, fellow fans will rush to help you change it. Run out of food or drink during the tailgate or forget some important item? Your tailgate neighbor is always there to happily bail you out. I have taken many people to their first race over the years and I have never had one person say they had a bad time and would never go back. With all of that said "DOT" has some thorns to go with its roses, of course. As a summer, popcorn, blockbuster film it is a wonderful experience and everyone should see the film. It captures the spirit of NASCAR, the track day spectacle of it all, etc...but, the two things that did not age well on its release and have not aged well here in the 21st century are 1) All the shifting...there are a few ovals where there is shifting, but generally on an oval you wind it up to the top gear and leave it in the top gear until there is a yellow or you are coming into the pits. Yes, it's very dramatic to hear the drivers in the movie talk about passing someone and then they show them grabbing a gear and making the pass. But, that's not how NASCAR passes are made. 2) The beating and banging...yes, there is a great deal of contact in stock car racing, especially on the short tracks and yes, drivers have been seriously injured and or killed as a result of excessive contact. But, the way it's depicted in the film is a gross exaggeration.

    "Because bigger is better" - quotes Miss Pat Carroll from September 15, 1985. "Days of Thunder" was Tony Scott's 1990 sports movie was bigger and better in the tradition of 1969's "Winning" plus even more exciting, breathtaking, thrilling, intriguing, fascinating, electrifying, gripping, lively, moving, rousing and touching than "Revenge" and others did. It was nominated for an Oscar for best sound - Donald O. Mitchell, Rick Kline, Kevin O'Connell, Charles M. Wilborn in 1991.

Robert Duvall playing a Southerner and nailing it. The man went from the Godfather to Pitt crew chief. Who does that!? I always thought Michael Rooker was playing himself. I always wondered how they got some of those shots. I didn't know they actually put a couple cars in the race (for 100 miles but still). Pretty amazing. Similar to the whole Brad Pitt thing a couple months ago in Formula 1 except there was no way F1 would let him drive next to the big boys in a race lol.

    If you look closely while watching the film, you can see actual nascar footage. Some moments you can see Dale Earnhardts car
