The Formula 1 Rivalry That Inspired Hollywood

Спорт

Hollywood didn't really need to cook up a script when they made a Formula 1 film back in 2013. And that's because the 1976 season battle between Niki Lauda and James Hunt was one of the all-time great battles in - not just Formula 1 - but all of sports. You've seen the film. Here, I'll tell you more of the story ;)

Rush is a genuinely brilliant movie and its a shame it didn't do better at the box office. It deserves to be seen and known more widely. had it been released today, with the popularity of F1 at a high because of stuff like Netflix, it would probably have been an even bigger cultural blockbuster. And it really does convey the essence of Formula One racing and the psychology of drivers so brilliantly

If it were made today, it would probably have a bigger budget too allowing them to do more with the race scenes. The fact that F1 was so niche at the time lead to some unfortunately tight purse stings. They did however absolutely nail the casting.

Lauda’s quote about Hunt after his sadly early passing is one of the most touching tributes to anyone I’ve ever read. “Of course he didn't listen to me. For James, one world title was enough. He had proved what he needed to prove. To himself and anyone who doubted him. And two years later, he retired. When I saw him next in London, seven years later, me as a champion again, him as broadcaster, he was barefoot on a bicycle with a flat tire, still living each day like his last. When I heard he died age 45 of a heart attack, I wasn't surprised. I was just sad. People always think of us as rivals but he was among the very few I liked and even fewer that I respected. He remains the only person I envied.”

Racing is safer than ever. The drivers are, however, still putting their well being at risk. It's only three years ago we lost Hubert at Spa. Grosjean was lucky to walk away from his fireball. And I don't want to think about Zhous car catching fire at Silverstone. Even the porpoising can post a dager, as it could give the drivers micro-concussions causing long term brain damage as has been reported with boxers. Moving at high speed is inherently dangerous. And while motorsport is safer than ever, we need to understand and appreciate that the drivers are taking a huge risk - for our entertainment.

Gasly and the crane at Suzuka were more in line with marshalls running across the track while backmarkers are catching the SC train (Italy 2020), race restarted before crane is fully put away in slippery conditions (Turkey 2020), or even Bianchi - the race directors making racing more dangerous than it needs to be.

It's not gonna happen, because - even though the sentiment expressed in the comments here that "F1 was kinda 'niche' back when this film was made" is nonesense - it is true that americans apparently don't care for F1 and even less for its history. The rest of the world isn't that picky, Days of Thunder was a success because it was a Tom Cruise film and nobody who watched it gave a rats arse about Nascar. More importantly however, the rest of the world has no trouble identifying with a protagonist from the angro-sphere, contrary to the apparent unwillings of the people from the anglo-sphere to identify with protagonists from outside of the anglo-sphere. Rush was actually Lauda's biography packed into a film conceived to appeal to the anglo-sphere, which is why the film tries very hard to focus on Hunt, even though for most of the film he accomplishes very little, especially compared to Lauda. *This film was doomed at the box office because nobody knows/remembers Hunt.* I had to google who this guy was and it spoiled the end of the film for me. Most F1 World Championship winners aren't remembered, more than that is necessary to remain a part of the collective memory. Everybody knows Lauda, my grandmother knew who Nicki Lauda was. You can go to any retirement home in Brazil and ask anyone you encounter there who Ayrton Senna was and you will be schooled. Same is true of Prost, because Senna was Prost's nemesis, neither Mansell or Piquet are remembered in such a way, if people remember them at all. And we both know that a film about Senna and Prost wouldn't be able to draw an american audience. Hell, Hollywood had to dig deep in the bargain bin to come up with a film about Ford vs Ferrari, because the americans know ford, the name Shelby and were willing to identify with Ken Miles, but god forbid the driver's motherlanguage were french or even german, american's wouldn't bother to see the film no matter how good it is. Ford's victory at Le Mans is a footnote in motorsport history, but it's the only bit of Le Mans history that could galvanize the interest of an american audience that's the bitter truth. That's why most of motorsport history or even world history will never make it into a Hollywood film.

I turned 11 that year. It's not one I'll ever forget. Much as I wanted Hunt to win, I was an admirer of Lauda's skill. After the accident, and after he returned (I totally blubbed at the start of the race, and again at the end. I was a watery wreck! Not because of Hunt, of course, but full of emotion for Niki) I was torn between the two of them. Yes, of course I wanted my fellow Brit to win the championship - I think that even then I understood it would probably be his only real chance at it - but being a typical Brit, I can't help but support the underdog. And after seeing the state Niki was in after that first race back, he could only be seen in that light. (I was still 10 years old at that point, so you have to remember how kids think. It's very black and white.) When it came to that last race in Japan, and I saw them going off to race in conditions only a madman would consider safe, I was terrified, particularly for Niki (by then I was a more "grown-up" 11 year-old, with a very safety conscious ex-rally driver dad - yes, that's paradoxical in ways, especially for a rally driver, but he _never_ skimped on safety standards and would explain why I couldn't do it either. He was a cracking dad :)) The world championship had lost its meaning for me at the start, it wasn't worth anyone's life. I felt - and would still feel it - that if Niki had one more big crash, especially so soon, he wouldn't survive it. I can't tell you how relieved I was, and how full of admiration, when he pulled into the pits! Then, being 11, of course I was urging Hunt on to win the championship. Nobody can accuse an 11 year-old of consistency! Excellent video as ever, young man. More please! I'm still waiting on the Pat Moss video 😜

This movie. The very single movie has successfully made me wanted to know so much more about formula 1. I ended up watching "1" documentary, then began to learn about motorsport history as a whole. What an amazing movie this was, I still love to watch it if it's shown on TV.

Rush was amazing! And Daniel Brühl definetely nailed Niki Lauda! Btw., Niki Lauda himself became a TV expert for German RTL and often gave Insights, even when he worked for a team on the grid. Kapperl off to you, Josh, and Kapperl off to Niki and James!

I was a kid during this time and I remember sitting up with my dad watching formula 1 and cheering these guys on. Niki Lauda was always a favourite of mine, his guts to come back from such an accident and to keep on giving to the sport even after retiring just cannot be denied. Hunt was another one who inspired in his own way. There have been many great men in the sport who deserve to have their story told. Please keep this up!

Rush is such a great movie and Chris Hemsworth and especially Daniel Brühl are excellent as James and Niki. 76 was truly a great F1 season and what Niki did coming back from that crash and achieving what he did shows what an amazing human being he was. It's a shame these two legendary personalities are no longer with us.

To add a little detail, your so called fuel infringement wasn´t something the FIA judged over McLaren, but half the team got arrested on the italien border for "illegal fuel smuggling". They were of course released as it turned out to be false, but because of that the teamed couldn´t show up to the qualifying in time, hence why the McLarens started from the back row

Finally had the time to watch your video, really well done, great story telling and editing. Rush is honestly one of my favorite films, I think Daniel Brühls performance is very underrated, he absolutely nailed the voice and accent of niki lauda, not only in the original voice but also in the dubbed German version. For a German to get absolutely nail the Austrian accent of niki lauda is no easy feast, but it was brilliant.
