The Gododdin - The Warriors & The Poets

The Gododdin were the ancient people that the Romans first recorded when they entered into what we now know as modern-day Scotland.
The Gododdin had a kingdom which stretched from the Lothians to the North of England, originally their capital was in Trapain law but they built a huge fortress on Arthurs Seat in Edinburgh! The Gododdin were also responsible for the oldest recorded poem found in the British Isles, Y Gododdin.

Great video, it is said that Maelgwyn, The great King reigning among the Britons in the region of Gwynedd, Wales, was a descendant of Cunedda / Cundag who had come from the northern part 146 years before, ( 5th Century )from the region called Manaw Gododdin. In modern times the area of Eidyn south of the Firth of Forth I think.

Love the video. Since I was young, long ago, I was always reading of British history, the various legends and folklore, everything I could get my hands on and it all fascinated and inspired me. Now, in my 60's, it's still a lot that way, though I have many other mysteries to research and delve into. I was also very satisfied with touring the country and legendary places in my late 20's to early 30's as in feeling drawn there, yet I am an American with some ancestry there with the Hatfield's and Wilson's. Thanks again.

Personally, I am in Oz. I have ancestors from Germany, Scotland, Ireland and England, but it was from about 4 generations back on all branches so I don't have any identity other than Australian. BUT, even I, at that distance, feel enough affinity with the history of Briton, to have read alot of relevant history and literature. Including Y Gododdin, in recent weeks. It is not a narrative of the battle(s) of Cattraeth; rather, an extended set of eulogies to the fallen among the Goddodin, and their allies. Which makes it a far more personal and human poem, as its focus is not about the slaying and the decapitations, but about the people. If it is so that Scottish kids are not taught about that period of history, and are not made aware of Y Goddodin, that is indeed a stunning shame. Were I from gaelic background, and actually lived in those parts .. Ireland, Wales, Scottland, I reckon I would feel compelled to become acquainted with it, and revel in the history!

It's great that you are interested in this stuff, but I'll bet it makes you cringe when people say Eedinburg or Loth-AY-un. So it's a nice touch to do your research on pronunciations BEFORE you make the video, so Welsh speakers or Gaelic speakers, or whatever, don't have to cringe. It's more respectful, and people will respect you more. Here's some help - Y Gododdin: "uh Go-DO-thin" (Both "o"s rhyme with "go", hard th - you nearly had it right!) Mynyddog: MUH-nuh-thog (dd is always hard th, ddog rhymes with dog) Mwynfawr: MUIN-vower (rhymes with shower) Din Eidyn (Welsh): Deen AY-duhn (AY rhymes with say) Dùn Èideann (Gaelic): Doon EE-juhn Catraeth: ca-TRITHE (rhymes with Blythe) Keep up the good work!

mynyddog is pronounced as 'Mun' (as in munster) 'uh' and the last bit the 'dd' sound is similar to 'th' so would be similar to 'thog' sounds like dog. Mwyn would sound like coin with an 'm' fawr would sound like replacing the 'h' in hour with a 'v'. Therefore it would sound something phonetically like 'mun-uh-ddog moin-vour. Hope that helps.
