I'm going to give you a small list. They are all classics in their own way. 1) The Poseidon Adventure the original from 1972 or 1973. 2) The Towering Inferno around 1974 3) Death Wish the original starring Charles Bronson around 1973 or so. 4) The Sting starring Robert Redford Paul Newman and Robert Shaw around 1972-73 or so 5) The Taking of the Pelham 123 the original. Which came out around 1972 or 1973 or so. 6) the original remake of the Superman movies. 1978 starring Christopher Reeve 7) George the original 1975 starring Roy, Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. 8) exorcist the first one and the original 1972 or 3 starring Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn. 9) Saving Private Ryan, starring Tom Hanks and Matt Damon 10) Die Hard the original starring Bruce Willis, I think which came out in 1989

Same. I know people like to trash Part 3, but that scene is the greatest ending to a film I've watched. Whereas everyone else is audibly distraught, Michaels grief and pain is so immense that it can't be heard.... by not letting it be heard, we can only imagine what it sounds like. The other characters stop crying for a moment too, looking up, shocked at Michael's grief as if he is the unhappiest man the world, and that their own sorrow is miniscule compared to his. It's a masterpiece.

The Tragic Hero, in a manner of speaking. Has too much of a good quality, people close to them end up dead, they SUFFER, but then LIVE, a long time, WITH their suffering. Vader. Corleone. Etc. (albeit, these characters aren't as close-fitting to the description I gave as the characters in PROPER tragedies, by the Anciet Greeks, Shakespeare, Wagner, etc.)

I'm sure someone else said it, but Michael's daughter Mary in this film was actually the director Francis Ford Coppola's daughter Sofia Coppola. Sofia is now an award-winning movie director herself, and was the first American woman to be nominated for a Best Director Oscar for her 2003 film 'Lost in Translation' (she won an Oscar for her screenplay for that film). She also appeared in the first Godfather film: she was the baby in the Baptism scene (the baby that was supposed to be Connie's son). The actor Nicolas Cage is also a member of the Coppola family: he is Francis Ford Coppola's nephew, and his real name is Nicolas Coppola.

In case you won't watch the original Part III, at the end Michael sits alone in Sicily and as Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana plays, he breathes his last. Here there's just a glimpse of that death scene. I must admit that Coppola did improve on the original theatrical release by moving the scene where Michael wants to buy a controlling share of Immobilare to the beginning of the story, where it doesn't occur until 40 minutes into the original Part III. A vast improvement, as the focus of the story is clarified.

Part 1 and 2 are amazing but Part 3 completes the story perfectly. Michael had to live the rest of his old age alone, which was a brutal punishment for him after he realized how important his family was, so he tired to change and ask for forgiveness, yet he still ended up alone, paying for his sins. This is a new cut of the film that they just released this year, and they added the subtitle. But ironically, in this cut they left out the death of Michael Corleone. it happens a few seconds after they end this cut, when he dies in his chair and falls to the ground. Most of the criticism of this movie has been directed at the choice of Sofia Copolla as Michael's daughter, and her acting. She also appeared as his infant son in the first movie.

  • @paulp9274
    @paulp92742 жыл бұрын

In Mario Puzo's first draft of the script, Michael is shot and killed on the steps of the opera house. Francis Ford Coppola rejected that ending because he thought Michael deserved to be punished for his sins, so they killed Mary instead. Michael sets these events in motion himself when he says "I swear on the lives of my children, if I have one chance to redeem myself I will sin no more." Redeeming himself would basically require him to take no action against his enemies, allowing them to kill him. But Michael's nature won't allow him to do that, so he fights back and Mary gets caught in the crossfire. In the end, Michael dies like his father, an old man in his garden. But while Vito dies surrounded by his family, Michael is alone and unmourned.

I feel like Michael was in pursuit of a legitimate business life, through all three films, not just the third installment. That was the reason he was leaving New York towards the end of the first film. He naively believed he could break out of the life, by changing location and business. He took to his role as the Don, like a duck to water. He had good intentions, and always did what he did to protect his family. So many character breakdowns in these films. Great reactions! Protect his family? By killing his family (brother). Michael did not like his family, even from the beginning you can see his distaste for his family at his sisters wedding. The way he treated his wife and children as secondary citizens in his empire. Michael was not the Family man nor tried to be like his Father Vito Corleon. Vito did fight to protect his family.

You guys watched the recently released “Coda Edition”. In the previous version there is a few seconds cut from the ending. Just after old Michael puts on the glasses, he keels over falling off his chair to the ground, old, alone, surrounded by only a little puppy dog. A tragic ending for him. The third film is gaining acceptance but it can’t live up to the high bar set by GF1&2. GF3 is a fine movie taken in totality of the entire Corleone Family story. It’s like a tragic Shakespearean play. Michael gave an ominous statement to Vincent early in this film. “When they come, they come at what you love.” They hurt Michael by coming at his family. The only thing he ever loved and fought so hard to protect.

Initially, people didn't see this film as being quite as powerful. . .but times change. The narrative of _"this isn't as good as the others,"_ isn't reconsidered, but is sometimes simply repeated. Sometimes ideas get passed on over the decades without much thought. Perhaps these films can be looked at with a more modern sensibility, as an entire story. After all, audiences are more used to trilogies or franchises. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ *Edit:* In the second film, Michael was starting the process to go legitimate. But I feel what truly sealed his fate was killing Fredo. He crossed the line, and there was no way back. Wonderful reaction, as always! 🙋🏼‍♂️

I think for me it's a more powerful image that the last we see of Michael is just him putting on his glasses because: 1) It implies that he will have to live the rest of his days with the agonizing memory of his daughters death, even as a sad old man 2) The motif of him putting on the glasses for a final time before the fade to black harkens back to how he removed those glasses when he was reminded of Apollonia, showing a brief moment of emotional vulnerability and humanity. But now the shades are on permanently it seems - he never will love again, he will never feel again, and he will never be whole again.

Mario Puzo, the author of the book and also wrote the screenplays on all 3 died soon after this was made. He had begun a screenplay for a 4th picture but didn’t finish it. Plus Coppola the director didn’t want to do this 3rd part but needed the money. He said no more after Puzo died. So no #4 was made and now it’s 30 years past #3, 50 years since #1. Loved your reaction. There are things from the original version that I really miss in this re-edit. Originally, when Michael was in the hospital, Vincent and Neri went to Connie for her permission to kill Zasa, and she finally said, "DO IT!" In that moment, Connie herself was the acting Don of the family! And also in the original, we see Michael die at the end. He has an attack and slowly falls out of his chair and onto the ground. For me, this is more of a resolution to the saga. Anyway, it's nice to see people appreciating this movie instead of knocking it because it isn't as good as the first two. As for Mary's death, the irony is that Michael wanted absolution for his sins, but his sins were so great that for him to be forgiven required a blood sacrifice, which was Mary. She was the sacrificial lamb that allowed Michael to live the rest of his life in peace. Here's my suggestion for a 70s classic you should react to next: William Friedkin's THE FRENCH CONNECTION. By the way, here's a video I made in which I dubbed a tornado siren into Michael's silent scream at the end. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqCMzcOlds2ZlLw.html

There's very few times where a character that experiences profound loss and heartbreak in a movie and your heart breaks just watching it. The choice to cut the sound and then bring it back in when Michael was crying was genius and it gets me every time. The only other movies where I've experienced that much heartbreak is in: My girl American history X Shutter Island Pan's labyrinth Mystic river The English Patient I would love to see you guys react to these movies one day

The actress who played michaels daughter is the infant that was used in the first film for the Christening. She is the directors daughter. Sophia Coppala. Michael grew up, the managed to get the family legal like his father always wanted to do. He calmed down, but it doomed him. The boy who plays his son, is actually singing, he walked in off the street to audition and got the role :) Cheers.

The more I watch this movie, the better I like it. I think the reason why most people say they hate this film is because of the time between the first two films and this one. The first two films were so highly regarded which made the anticipation for part 3 so high. People had such high expectations for this film it was bound to disappoint. It's not as good as the first two movies but it is not a terrible movie. The more time passes the more I feel people will start to come around on Part 3.

3 has a lot of good points. I think Al Pacino and Diane Keaton both give their best performances of the series here, especially Keaton. Joe Mantegna is great as Joey Zaza. The confession scene is brilliant, and I love seeing the parallels between the opera and the characters stories. There is fan service for people who loved the first two without it being overbearing. And I feel it completes the story in a very satisfying way.

The 3rd installment of The Godfather was intended to show Micheal living a shallow life and the results of having lost everything important to him because of his "mission" to avenge his father and - sustain the family business created by him. Even the producer/director (Francis Coppola) had reservations about doing the movie, but went forward anyway because so much pressure was on him to do so. Nevertheless I do not agree that "3" was wasted film - I too enjoyed this trilogy to the end because the closure was Micheal's inability to get the "genie back in the bottle" once he poisoned his own "soul". Even with a confession and good intentions his soul was unsalvageable. The penalty of a life gone astray. -Daniel

I agree that it brings the story of Michael Corleone to a satisfying conclusion. It’s too bad that some aspects of the film and story were flawed, but it wasn’t likely that they could catch lightning in a bottle for a third time. Overall, it works.

Part II was in 1974 and Part III was in 1990. I'm wondering if they fast forwarded the time by that much. I'm guessing yes. I saw the third part at the theater and it really was incredible acting. The first one may have come out 50 years ago, but it's really a timeless movie.

If I may make a few suggestions/recommendations: "The Sting" (1973), "12 Angry Men" (1957) and "Midnight Run" (1988). I swear to God, as long a Copolla is going back and re cutting all his movies, he may as well shoot for the moon and edit the entire godfather trilogy together as one giant nine hour movie, going chronologically with all the flashback scenes in turn of the century Sicily and New Yory from part 2, continuing with the first movie in its entirety, along with the 1950's scenes from part 2 added onto it, then conclude with the entirety of Coda. Just picture it: the greatest saga of an American family ever captured on film, all together as maybe the single most stunning mega epic ever made.

Can't wait to see more classics! Yes, this is not the MIchael Corleone you knew! It's because it was more than almost twenty years later.....and they were all doing it for a cash grab! :P They wouldn't even cough up the money to have Robert Duvall in the movie (Tom Hagen). The movie was originally supposed to be Michael vs. Tom. Instead we have Connie as the Godmother, a creepy love story between cousins, and a lot of talk about diabetes! :D I'm a New Yorker: I can promise you that they never did mob hits in helicopters, shooting into a skyscraper with impunity! And I don't know if killing a person with eyeglasses frames is even possible, but hey......that's why Godfather 3 isn't nearly as good as the first two! Anyways, super excited to see more classics from you! One I think you'll love is "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind". "Dog Day Afternoon" is another great Al Pacino/John Cazale movie. "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" with Jack Nicholson, I think you will like that one.
