Sofia Coppola was a last-minute replacement for Winona Ryder. Ryder had to drop out for health issues about a week before filming started, so Francis plugged Sofia in there so they could start shooting. Winona Ryder made it up to Francis Coppola by bringing him the script that eventually became his version of “Dracula.”

Coppola was scrambling to find an actress to replace Winona Ryder who fell sick. He had already cast his younger sister Talia Shire (who was right for her part). So, he turns to his daughter and thinks, "Why not?" If Sofia had pursued acting on her own, she would have been good for romantic comedies, like Jennifer Aniston. Light, simpler material. Not deep, epic stuff like The Godfather story.

I agree, Vito's story is more compelling because he became a Don from his own actions, Micheal and Vincent were passed it on, Vito ruled from respect, Micheal ruled from fear which I imagine Vincent carried on due to the genetic temperament of his father. It's 1, 2, 3 for me with 1 and 2 at neck and neck due to the Vito Andolini backstory.

Yea Vito is more of a self-made man(although it was pretty gutsy for college boy Michael to decide to do that hit while having to experience in the life of crime). Also In defense of Michael, the Vito story was done in a very iconic epic fashion. While the rise of Michael was told in a traditional straight forward fashion. Like someone is attacked, Michael decides to do the hit and then he's the Don.

It wasn’t as bad as it is now, but now we are in the era “women and minorities ruin everything” if it isn’t male and white, it’s corporations forcing us to accept women and minorities against our will 🙄 So certain people feel like they have to “fight back” by making it clear, everything that highlights women or minorities is terrible. 😒 And to top it she is the daughter of Francis Ford Coppolla so people see “nepotism” whether it’s there or not and also feel the need to “fight back” against by saying she is terrible. So Sophia had the misfortune of being born the wrong gender, and to the wrong people, then choose the wrong career, debuted in the wrong movie😂

18:50 You do understand that it was always Vito's plan for Michael to wipe out all the heads of the 5 Families after he died, right? "I swear... on the souls of my grandchildren... that I will not be the one to break the peace we've made here today." And he wasn't the one. Very carefully worded, that vow. Vito was no pacifist, he just had near infinite patience. He didn't care about enjoying his own vengeance. He cared about spending the last few years of his life setting things up so that after he died, his son would be on top without anyone powerful enough to challenge him.

What I always found interesting about this story is that Vincent had inherited the character of Sonny and Micheal recognized it. Strong and likeable but hot headed and always in the moment. Micheal realized that with Sonny’s personality Vincent might be better suited to run the family than he is if he could teach Vincent some restraint and forward thinking. So Micheal hedges his bets, while he is trying to take the family fully legitimate, he grooms Vincent to take his place.

Michael was the strongest Godfather. As he said in 3 he regretted having people be killed on his order. Ex wife and son didn't want anything to do with him. Daughter was his biggest supporter. Michael's life after he became the Godfather was full of regrets. Although he didn't know until 3. Some may say Michael died of old age or natural causes. Imo I believe that Michael died of a broken heart...💔

At the end of Part I she comes in screaming & attacking Michael for killing her (very physically abusive) husband and tells Kay "Read the papers, THAT'S your husband!", so when Fredo dies 7-8 years later, yeah, she would have had no illusions as to what really happened. But by then she was already considerably hardened and had just offered to "stay home now" and take care of Michael (albeit probably just to come under his protection once she had finally gotten tired of tramping around using & being used by men.) Twenty years later at Michael's side and this is what she's become: someone who probably would have been fully capable of putting a hit out on Fredo herself.

Fun fact: In Sicily, cousin marriage has traditionally been approved, sometimes even preferred. They are (were?) big on family down there, and with blood feuds and nepotism being historically big deals, marrying into the family you already belonged to would seem beneficial. Don't know if that's still the case nowadays. I do know that marrying your first cousin is legal in my country, but I ain't got no cousins, so I guess I'll have to stay single! Probably for the better, because I think someone might have urinated in my genepool.

Part III is sorely under rated. It's a great film, and a fitting ending. The following is not directed at anyone specific, but the people that complain about this film are cretins. What did you expect, Michael ends up happy with everyone in the family having egg nog at Christmas together? This is what happens to powerful Mafia figures. They either die young themselves, watch other family members who are connected to them die young, end up in jail, or all of the above. It doesn't end well for these people, and that is where the brilliance of part III lies. They kept it real. Andy Garcia was great, though he's a loon in real life, Pacino was predictably great, Joe Mantegna did a wonderful job, and the ending was real. Michael Corleone was always going to suffer one way or the other because that's what happens to these guys. If you don't believe that watch interviews with guys like Michael Franzese, a real life Mafia man, when he talks about the enormous cost of being in the life. Yeah he survived, but he has spoken at length about the tremendous toll it took on him and his family and friends. Even if these guys live into old age the "life" gets them one way or another. Part III was great.

Oddly enough, one of the major inspirations for The Godfather (Joe Bonnano) did end up living out a quiet life in a nice neighborhood in my city (Tucson, AZ). His son was a major player in our Chamber of Commerce for years. And although there were a few short (< 1 year) jail stints in the '80s, he lived to the ripe old age of 97 and died of natural causes in 2002.

Unfortunately, Al Pacino wouldn't take a pay cut that would have brought Robert Duvall back as Tom. Duvall said he had no problem with Pacino earning 5x as much as him, but Duvall drew the line when Pacino was getting close to 10x as much. Duvall said everyone was in P3 for the $ and he wasn't going to take a much diminished share. Duvall would have greatly improved this film. I don't blame him for sticking to his demand for an equitable share.

I saw it in the theater before I saw the first 2 and loved it. Of course after seeing the first two I understood why everyone hates it. But it is the perfect ending. Michael asks his mother “can a man lose his family?” and it ends up happening. Michael had every advantage and lost it all and died old and alone.

The spaghetti western style music during the Eli Wallach scenes had another connection, though I’m not sure if it was intentional. When Paramount started developing the first movie, they insisted on hiring an Italian director. Sergio Leone was the initial first choice, but turned it down. Leone also passed away in 1989, around the time Godfather 3 was shot, so I’m wondering if the music change was a subtle tribute.
