When we think of dive watches, our minds typically wander to Swiss and Japanese creations. But do not sleep on the Germans, they definitely know their way around a dive watch as well. Glashütte Original caught the attention of sports watch enthusiasts looking for something different when they unveiled their SeaQ diver, a revival of their very own dive watch from 1969 - the first diving watch from Glashütte: the Spezialist SeaQ. Now, Glashütte Original has expanded their dive watch offering with a first for the brand, a chronograph dive watch. Let’s dive into the new SeaQ Chronograph.
The stainless-steel dive watch comes in a large 43.2mm case, with nice heft on the wrist, and although it is a chronograph it is rated to 300 metres of water-resistance - tested using DIN 8306 and ISO 6425 standards. Geometrically, the case has relatively compact and squared-off lugs that camber around the wrist and mitigate its presence on it. Mixed satin and polished finishes insert a degree of elegance into the watch, which, of course, at its core is very robust.
Fittingly for an ocean-themed timepiece, this first-ever chronograph diver for the brand is outfitted with a blue ceramic bezel insert and a PVD blue sunburst dial. Situated beneath a domed sapphire crystal, which gives it the sort of dramatic warped effect that collectors love about vintage watches, the dial conveys the running seconds at 9’, 30-minute elapsed minutes register at 3’ and a double-window calendar date complication at 6’ with two dial-matching white on blue discs. The indications are highly legible, with luminsicent coatings found on the central pencil-shaped hours hand, broad arrow minutes hand, sub-seconds hand on the running seconds register, applied hour indices and numerals, and the triangle indicator on the timing bezel. The only lume-less elements are tied to the chronograph functionality - the central chronograph seconds hand and the smaller hand found on the elapsed minutes register.
Four configurations are available to choose from. You can purchase the watch on a blue rubber strap, grey synthetic fabric strap, and blue synthetic strap with pin/buckle or folding clasp closures. The fourth configuration, which we have in hand, is a case-matching, stainless-steel bracelet. The bracelet has the advantage of offering a fine adjustment folding clasp, which can be incrementally enlarged or shortened at the wearer’s discretion. Unlike the case, the bracelet has a full tool-watch vibe with three-piece links that are entirely brushed on their front end. Interestingly the screws used to add/remove links are found on the underside, rather than the topside, so the flanks of the links will appear clean and crisp.
Inside, visible beneath an exhibition caseback, you’ll find where a ton of the value of this watch lies. The in-house calibre 37-23 is finely decorated in German-style with Glashütte stripes, blued screws, and a polished swan neck regulator on the balance. The central winding rotor is striped and openworked, with a gold GO logo medallion. Technically speaking, there is a lot to like about the automatic calibre as well. It offers 72 hours of power reserve, and utilises a silicon hairspring to resist against magnetism.
Considering the saturation of dive watches, it is nice to have watches like the SeaQ Chronograph that offer a distinct proposition within the ubiquitous category. So, if you are craving a dive watch for your collection - but want something different - you may not need to look further than this.

I have the GO pan date on a canvas strap. It’s fab ! Period … for me. I have a seven inch wrist.
I have a SeaQ panorama, at 15.5mm it fits better on the wrist than a pelagos which is 14mm because the way the case is designed. The Pelagos is very tall but the SeaQ is more compact. I tried them both on multiple times buts it's true. GO's movements and finishing are works of art, runs at - .5 seconds per day better than COSC and METAS, 100 hour power reserve, 100% made in house. Almost new SeaQs are going for around 7-9k right now.
My AD put this on the table recently. While I was unsure about the standard GO divers, this Chrono convinced me instantly.

The distortion effect of the doomed glass on the indexes is just amazing

Its a top hat sapphire crystal and does look pretty cool!
The watch looks fantastic, however it is too large and bulky for my wrist. The SEAQ with the normal date however fits quite well.
Brushed centerlinks, perfect!
Stunning!
Absolutely Gorgeous..... I own a SeaQ Pano Date in Blue so if this is in my future I think I may have to wait for a Black Dial option.
I like the more than the SeaQ! really cool--

Yes, much nicer than the regular diver.
People keep saying that it is too large, though it seems to be about the same size as the large cased Planet Ocean Seamaster. The measurements suggest it is smaller than my first generation 45.5mm. (Not that it is a small watch.) I have a slim wrist, but don’t feel like it is massive. To each their own I suppose.
GOs SeaQ range of divers have left me cold so far. But I really like this diver Chronograph! It just oozes quality and presence. My favorite from this catagory of watch together with the sublime Aquastar Deepstar Chronograph.
I would love to see a bicolor version grey and gold like the panorama date!
I've got poor uncorrected eyesight so I keep my lumed watch on in bed: At 3am and I'm not wearing my glasses, that minute hand with split lume is going to cause an issue as it looks like an overlayed GMT hand. Like they got stuck together. Otherwise it's a stunner. Gorgeous.

Yeah but surely you're cognizant enough even at 3am to know that the $15k dive watch that you personally curated is not and will never be a GMT?
Not a chrono guy, I have the two-tone Pano date… perfect enough.
I love the watch but only a 30 min chronograph kind of stinks. Wish it was 60 minutes at least. You can time 30 minutes easier with the dive bezel.
Beautiful watch but I hate that 6 hour marker (wish they left it off). I will therefore be taking the $20,000 that I don't have elsewhere.
Beautiful watch but at 17+mm thickness it's just a non-starter for me. I love chronographs so I'm used to thick watches and 15mm is the max I can tolerate.
Wow!
There's a lot out there what slaughter tutor's pelagos 42 for it's thickness, well the peli looks positively sleek compared to this one.
Awesome. Don't need that obnoxious date window, though. Thanks.

Signature for the Brand
GO has very good looking watches especially their Pano and vintage collections. But their price tags of over Aus 20K is very steep, especially to those not familiar with the German style brand. 😮💨

It is a fraction of the price of a Lange. I know Lange is slightly better finished but Glashütte should be compared to watches at that end rather than more mainstream offerings.
how much?.... really? wt...
Incredible looking, but too big and fat. Better at 41, and the thinner the better.

Not too many thin 300 metre water resistant watches out there.

Submariner 41 wears as flat as a pancake compared to most dive watches.
Blimey, at €15,400 it makes the Omega Seamaster professional 300m chronograph look an absolute bargain at €8,000. Technically a better watch too! Bonkers! Price you pay for something a bit different and exclusive I guess.

Other than price in what way is the Omega better? Don't even get me started on that joke of a bracelet the seamaster has.

@@attila2246 metas certified (higher accuracy) titanium balance bridge. Twin barrels, more extensive use of ceramic, 12h chronograph, helium escape value (these are diving watches)…. To name a few reasons…. Also, I believe the buttons cannot be activated under water unlike the Omega. 🙅 Didn’t even mention the co-axial escapement thus longer service intervals and jewel count… 😎 Just shows the outrageous value that Omega is offering. 👍🏻
too many fonts. remove 12 and 6 the watch will look more elegant
16.95 mm is a joke... why cant they understand ... people need wearable watches

I tried this watch on and loved it. Short and curved lugs made it feel great. Feels expensive and amazing looking movement.
Rolex and Omega are leagues above this, technically speaking. This is a well known fact among Horologists.
