Hands-On: Glashutte Original SeaQ - Is it worth a Rolex?

This is a follow up to the video on the Glashutte Original SeaQ Panorama Date, this is the Glashutte Original SeaQ. If the Panorama Date is the equivalent to the Rolex Sea-Dweller, then the SeaQ standard is Glashutte Original's alternative to the Rolex Submariner. This watch cost £7,400, so it's not cheap! But unlike the Panorama Date, it doesn't have an open case back, so we can't see all the watchmaking goodness that Glashutte Original has done on this dive watch.

I own this same watch purchased from Wempe in NY. I simply adore this piece simply because it's a true unique design and extremely well made. I tried on the bigger brother but it wears to big even on my 7 inch wrist, it wasn't huge at all it's that it's tall at 15.5mm. I find that the 39.5mm version is the sweet spot for me.

39.5mm is a large watch. The 5 digit Subs we’re about that size. I believe the original Subs were more like 38mm.

Just bought the SeaQ on a bracelet. Absolutely amazing watch! AD had both black and green dial versions in stock. Both beautiful, but I had to go with the black as it will be my daily wearer. I agree, it could have more power reserve.

Got mine at the AD in Blue with a fully brushed bracelet but I wear it on a rubber strap. Finishing is a level above my GMT Master 2. Nothing beats an in-house movement compared to the lack luster quality controls in current ETA movements. Keeps better time in all six positions versus the Master 2. Daily wear for me so no need to wind, ever. Best, not an attention grabber at a distance but up close it is a scene stealer compared directly to a Rolex.

I own both the Oris 65 2017 in all steel including the bracelet and the Glashutte sea q . Totally different watches from top to bottom. From unscrewing the crown and hacking to setting the time and winding, the GO is amazing. The Oris 65 is a nice watch, especially the 2017 with that translucent dark blue edge on the dial it’s gorgeous indeed. The Sellita SW200-2 on the Oris is okay, the Soprad A10 smokes it escially when winding. I had plenty of time to return my GO back to Wempe and I just could not do it. Amazing watch. I put the GO with my recent JLC Polaris Marine Date. Well, close.

My money would go to the Oris tbh, your'e getting a rather functional watch (it has an ISO certification which many people don't know) and it has a movement that is easily serviceable. Of course the biggest thing, as Adrian mentioned in the beginning, is the look of the watch: the 12,3,6,9 with the dimensions of a vintage rolex sub on one of the best interpretations of a rivet oyster style bracelet is really hard to compete with. At the end of the day, you just have to go your own way ;)

I don't quite understand why everybody keeps comparing this watch to a Rolex Submariner when the obvious point of comparison should be a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Also, a dive watch does not need a display back. It's another potential weak point which could compromise the water resistance. Fair point on the 40 hours power reserve, though. I prefer the blue version, as I can do without the fake patina.

  • @michellep2682

Old review but just picked up this watch with the blue dial on the bracelet. Everyone talks about the power reserve but it is about the same as a PP 5711 or 5167 (35-45 hrs) that cost substantially more. I'd love to have a longer power reserve but isn't a deal breaker for me.

They are wonderful, super accurate, watches. The new gold ones have the open case back, which hopefully will move across the line of the 39s (it is a beautiful movement). Even at retail they are more watch for the money than the Submariner (which I still love, but it just isn’t the same league). And you can usually get one for less than full retail. As for power reserve, 40 has been fine, rarely is 70 hrs any better for me (maybe for just a two watch rotation, but for either I put them on a winder). They should at the least offer an open case-back you could switch in like Blancpain used to do with the Leman.

The design of the case and the bezel reminds me of the Seiko SPB051J1. Obviously, the dial and the caseback are very different however.

Great watch but I'm with you, the Panorama is lots more watch for the money. The display back, the large date window with the separate numerals and the gorgeous dial all add up to far more than the extra cost. Luckily I have a 7cm wrist that it doesn't look too big on, now I just need the cash :/

About power reserves - it's a fun stat, but never seems useful, because I change watches too often. Even give a watch a 100hr power reserve and it'll likely not be running when I pick it up again. I guess it's nice if you have an everyday watch you wear to work, and wear whatever else over the weekend, so you can put the work watch down Friday evening and it'll still be set when you pick it up Monday morning.

Power reserve should be 70 hours. I don't mind the closed case back. The trident is quite striking.

I want to like it as i respect GO the watchmaker, but I find the numerals to be cartoonishly large on the SeaQ - but less so on the SeaQ Panorama Date. And I agree, for that money there are so many choices...and one has to be a dedicated GO enthusiast to choose the SeaQ/SeaQ PD over other exceptional watches at that price point.

Every time I see this watch, I'm reminded of the Longines Hydroconquest. If I were after that aesthetic, I think I'd pocket the 6k and get the Longines...

@@Jabber-ig3iw How's that funny? I'm not saying the two watches are on par, just that the SeaQ looks like a Hydroconquest aesthetically.

When you think GO you usually associate them with dress watches so those looking for dive watches would probably look elsewhere. Also I think you get alot more value in a Panoreserve with only a slight increase in price.

The preference toward display case backs, especially those with beautifully finished movements, is a very new trend and I don't think it should be a requirement to justify a high price tag. This model is a freaking home run. I just wish the lume color was white.

Hi, considering the price point how does the fit and finish of the Glashutte compare to that of an Oris 65? I see a lot of similarities. Really enjoy your content...

Hi Gaurav, this GO is far superior to the Divers65 with regards to build quality, finish and engineering. It certainly has similar styling to the 65, but when you hold them, they are worlds apart.
