Those scarpa F1s are really nice, I just picked up a pair. I'm new to backcountry and your videos are really helpful for getting more info on some routes here near SLC. Have a great rest of the season.

Champagne Taste! Consider wearing your beacon on your chest. If you were ever in a burial situation, the beacon is 1m away from your mouth/nose (airway). If rescuers locate/dig to your beacon below your waist, they're still a long way away from unburying your airway/head when time is not on their side. Just food for thought, but I used to keep in my beacon pocket in my baselayer until I realized the harness gets it up even higher.

How is the downhill performance in those boots? I’m am new to the touring seen and trying to figure out a perfect setup for myself. Looking to do shorter tours in search of untouched powder. Not planning on doing day long/multi day tours

Really terrific! I love them, but I also prefer longer tours. If you’re only doing short ones maybe look at something in the 1300-1400 gram range like the Technica Zero G. My friend has those and loves them, a little better performance from a heavier boot

You should check out moment skis. They're made here in Reno and are really nice. They have a touring line, awesome graphics, light and I like supporting an American company.

No not at all. If anything I feel that they’re warmer than my older heavier boots because the toes are fairly roomy aka great circulation. However, I’m naturally a very warm person, so take that with a grain of salt

Like your videos! I am starting to get into BC skiing this year and collect some of the gear. I noticed, from your past videos, you seem to always have fixed grip poles, which is what i was leaning towards. Wondering why and do you size them longer than normal for leverage on the up and then choke up skiing down, or just size them like normal poles. Thanks!

Thank you!! I vastly prefer fixed length poles. I found that the adjustable ones fell down occasionally, which is really jarring and could be dangerous. Once I tightened them they became too tight to unclip. And then after that I found myself never adjusting them… so I prefer fixed length because they’re more simple and usually lighter! I usually size them up by 10cm or so, but I don’t choke up I just ski with them a little longer

Do you ever carry the skies on the backpack? If so how do you mount them?

Yes you can, in the a-frame style, attaching the skis to the sides of the pack

If you don’t mind me asking, what’s your height and weight? Looking at your bindings , but not sure if they’re reliable for 255# like I am.

I'm 5-11 and about 200 lbs. You should ask your local ski shop if you have a reliable one, or you could call Skimo Co in Salt Lake, they're pretty knowledgeable about the gear and some of its limitations. I would guess it would be totally fine

does the nozzle on the dynafit bottle ever freeze up? I have a specialized moflo bottle on my shoulder strap, its not insulated but it almost never freezes, the issue is just that the nozzle freezes solid then I need to unscrew the whole cap to drink

Oh cool, I love the moflo bottles I have a bunch for my bikes. I've never experienced any freezing with the nozzle, I think that's because it's a squeeze bottle and the silicon barrier between the water and the air is thin enough that in the event it does freeze you can squeeze the water through it. Hopefully that makes sense, kinda tough to explain I guess haha

@@MacLeanWright I bought the Camelbak insulated bottle and it froze up on me. I will say it took longer to freeze than the Specialized, but when it thawed in my car on the drive home the whole nozzle assembly fell apart and now the bottle leaks lol. Strange that we both live in Utah and have such different experiences. I tour mostly at night so maybe its colder idk. I'm gonna try the Polar insulated bottle and see how it works.

Im just woried if the boots are tough enought to ski steep and icy slopes dont they bend over to the side like scarpa alien when they are on 100mm+ skis?

I ski the boot with 107 Atomic Backlands and have never had that problem. They're really a great boot, I would recommend them to anyone

Do you ever feel this is too much ski for this boot / binding combo? Sounds like you dont carry an airbag for touring?

Good question about the ski, but the answer is a resounding no. The F1 LT is really that great of a boot, and the backland is a really responsive and lightweight ski for it's size. I don't carry an airbag for touring but I know some people like to do so. I'm ultra-conservative in my terrain choices so the extra cost and weight doesn't seem worth it to me. Perhaps in the future if the price comes down substantially and becomes lighter, I'll consider it!

Hey great review, I really like how detailed you were with everything. I have a few questions about your I like the idea of being light and quick as you are. I have similar boots but from la Sportiva. I’m currently looking at the backland 100 but I’m also considering the 107‘s as a do it everything ski here in Washington. what was your deciding factor for one over the other? Most of my skiing will be touring through the trees and skiing on volcanoes in the late spring

Good question and thanks for reaching out! Just looked up the weights of the 107 and the 100, seems like the 100 is about 250g per ski lighter than the 107. I think it really depends what you want to do and what kind of snow you ski. I think it would be pretty brutal to carry around a heavier-than-needed ski in the spring when out for long days. But then if skiing 2 feet of fresh snow it would be way more fun on a wider ski. I think I would opt for something lighter and smaller but that might be my preference and not others. Touring is 95% uphill, so I always keep that in mind. That being said, a QST 106 and Backland 107 were my main ski for three seasons before I recently picked up the Dynafit Blacklight Pro 85mm. They are less than 1000g per ski, so that's ultralight territory. Knowing what I know now, I pretty much always ski the Blacklight over the Backland unless it has snowed at least a foot. But other people disagree with me. So just think about whether extra weight on days you don't need a 107mm ski is worse than wanting a wider ski when it snows a lot. I'm not sure I can answer that for you haha. I know that out of the ~200 days I've skied in the last couple years, probably only 10-20 have been truly deserving of a "powder ski". And even on those days the uphill is 95%. So that's why I prefer light stuff. But maybe this is making the case for two skis ;)

I went ahead and ordered a set of backland 100 thinking that it would make for a ok powder ski as as be a little bit lighter on the uphill. I think you have a good point about skiing in the back country being 90% going uphill. Thank you I really appreciate your review.

I do like my water, snacks and some occasional other gear up front! I hate to remove my pack. It's just not efficient. I mean, ski touring race packs often have pockets up front, like running vests. Why does almost no one make backpacks with a vest style closure with pockets and stuff? I love those. I own 2 running packs, 1 5L and one 12L one. Too bad they do not fit my gear correctly for skimo. My orthovox cross rider 18L that is made for this has no pockets accessible while wearing it besides a tiny waist pocket that fits only like 1 bar. No phone or other stuff. I know dynafit makes multiple water bottle holders and they are probably pretty great! Have not tested those. I might as well pick one up. An insulated bottle makes sense but I have never had a frozen bottle that I cannot drink out of actually. Only a frozen bladder tube of course which is why I often like bottles when it's freezing, or my tube should ve under my jacket in my mini vest (only holds a blader, ggisisfor running,xc skiing and such where gear is not needed). The bigger volume of water and the sloshing from my skiing usually prevents it freezing for some hours, really, the insulated holder is in my opinion good enough if you wear your pack constantly (body heat as well, my bladder resevoir is often warm). I lately saw the Atomic Backland Backpack 16+ UL on sale. Kind of small, (16-20L) but I like it small, my gear is minimalism anyways. This one has a vest style fit and pockets up front, also for bottles or whatever you like! I might pick it up for the -50% I've seen it! Deal. It also fits my probe and shovel, plus accessible skin pocket while wearing the pack👍

Couldn’t agree more! I wish there were more vest-style packs for skiing. These days I have begun using a soft flask in my DNA 16 backpack more than a hard bottle

dynafit tlt 8 son, 1000g, bomber. no boa closure, no fabric that can tear on the front, stiff.

Yeah I agree. I have the ski trap Gara on my lighter set up. The backland does have a flat by the way, just have to rotate the heel piece (which I almost never do)

@MacLean Wright just bought some new skis and been debating putting that dynafit superlight binging that I already have. Thing is that you can't adjust the binding for different boots. Might end up getting ATK's. The ski shops in Golden say they hardly ever see em in for warranty, as opposed to all the other brands, dynafit abd g3 especially.

What's a guy who doesn't know what rocker is doing making a gear inventory video? 🤔
