Ski Mountaineering Equipment | What I Would Keep & Change | EP4

Спорт

In this video I reflect on ski equipment I used when climbing and skiing my first 4000m peak. I weigh and show you what I normally ski tour with and how I changed it for ski mountaineering and finally what I learned from this adventure and show you how I would improve my packing for the next mountain.

This is the way to do it! Make your best choice, do the trip, then come back and evaluate what worked and what didn’t. This is how we learn and improve. Not just for gear, but also for skills and decisions.

you can put your skins under your jacket when riding down, that way the skins will dry a bit and work better when touring the rest back home. I would also recommend to add a small first aid kit with 1-2 bandages to your tape and ibu + an emergency sleeping bag or thermal blanket. cheers!

You can save weight with a smaller shovel, and it will take up less space in your pack, meaning you can get by with the smaller backpack easier. The Black Diamond Transfer LT shovel is my current favorite. It still works well (has a long handle), but is much smaller and lighter than that full sized Mammut you have there

How’s the change from the Backland 107 + shift bindings to the backland 100 + touring bindings? Are you able to charge and trust on that touring ligheter gear? I I’ve heard that the shift binding feels a LOT heavier on the uphill for a LITTLE more response skiing down, do you feel the same? I am thinking aboutt getting touring gear and your help would be great! Thanks for the content, it’s really helpfull and enjoyable ;)

OK this is some really useful information I really appreciate it, however I have some questions about your skis. I really like the atomic Backland but I’m torn between going with the 100 and the 107‘s as my all-around touring skis here in the Pacific Northwest. Right now I’m leaning towards the 100s because 90% of it is going uphill. what are your thoughts as an expert who skis both?

Try using a bum bag in addition to the rucksack. Great for things you need on the go, so you don’t need to remove the rucksack

Did’nt see you back an airbag. Should this be essential avalanche gear for ski touring?

  • @StompItTutorials

Yes and No, great to have but not a must have. I generally like airbags and they are a great safety add on which will save lives. You will see me wear one in adventure vlogs this winter where the objective and risk situation is different from Gran Paradiso on that specific day.

Even this "light" set up is quite heavy, the backland 100 wouldn't be the first ski I would pick up for a spring tour even my backland 95s are quite weighty with a dynafit st binding fitted.

Tomsan, actually, the Backland 100 is VERY light. It is actually lighter than the 95! (At least in years past. The 95 was redone this year. Not sure about weight). Of course, 95mm might be better skiing or skinning on firm snow.

Good idea with the helmet but... climbing helmets look so silly for skiing. Im super happy to wear one when I´m out multi-pitch climbing but when skiing im too vain :P Maybe I can find a helmet that satisfy both needs.

  • @PatrickWoerner

I did a Skitour a few days ago wearing my petzl sirocco helmet.. When riding down, the air was whistling through every little slot in the helmet. this could be very cold and it was very loud. Also: A mountaineering helmet isn't meant for skiing, since it's constructed for other risks (rock/icefall, which generally come from above). A Skihelmet is designed for other risks (falling). There are dedicated skitouring helmets. Hope this one helped :)
