The Gathering Storm, the first time Brandon Sanderson has the reigns. It was a fantastic Wheel of Time book.

It is a very good book, it fascinates me how Rand leaves his burdens and accepts his destiny. Although many may not like it, Rand is the most developed character in the saga

This book had a great upswing, characters finally getting their dues and getting some wins, and your review was also excellent, agreed with all your points and shoutout to your FFX reference, totally on point. I was thinking while reading Rand's final scene on Dragonmount... we know now that there are 2 more books after this one, but when it was first published, where people reading Rand's monologue about ending the Pattern and thinking 'Wow, this is how it all ends?' for one hot minute? Can't wait to come back once it's time to tackle the next book! Edit: People are calling you out about the Blue Ajah being abolished and not the Red, but when I heard your review I got more that you were talking about how the Reds were on precarious footing after all that Elaida did and all the manipulation and how their entire mission (gentling men who can channel) was essentially gone now, so this was Egwene's olive branch to bring them back into the fold instead of doing the same thing that Elaida did (abolish an Ajah due to differences). No worries about that.

Brandon deserves the praise he gets for the job he did finishing this series, but there are differences in the characters and if you let it, it can really sour things for you. Mat is still a funny character, but he was always so much of Jordan's own sense of humor, its just not going to be the same from anyone else. That said, if you can accept this, Brandon does nail 90% of the character voices and the various plot lines are moving fast enough that this is a really fun ride. Rands plotline finally hits the turning point, and man was he in a bad way, and its all believable, very well done. The Aes Sedai who have puppeteer the nations for countless generations are shown to be little more then squabbling children over the course of the series, are finally given direction, the damage is done, the tower will never reach the same influence again for generations, but the bleeding has stopped. Your on the last two books of a epic series, take your time and enjoy them, you only get to lose your wotginity once. :)

All good points and it was definitely a great book. Certainly some of the differences in writing style and approach were noticeable but it didn't bother me much outside of a few things with Mat. I'm excited to see how the series wraps up.

I finally broke down and started a reread of this series, or at least the first 3 or 4 books. Ill see how it goes. I read these books in 2013 and I actually remember a lot of the events in The Gathering Storm. I thought Sanderson did a great job wrapping up the series.

LMAO . . . . your details are waaaaay off on Egwene's plotline :P Someone else mentioned this but yeah, the Blue ajah was the one disbanded by Elaida (who herself was a Red.) Egwene named the same one who was in charge of beating her, Silviana, her Keeper because Silviana did her job w/o prejudice. Yes, Egwene absolutely dressed down everyone for the shit that happened.

Ngl Egwene is the only good female main character in WoT imo and only since she became Amyrlin (so around Book 7 or so) Ah yes and Rand is also so frustrating with not torturing Semirhage like she loves doing that shit and he's like no we can't hurt woman? Dude that's not a woman that's a monster in human flesh

Rand is desperately trying and failing to hold onto his humanity, any sane person knows what needs to be done with Serirhage, but Rand is not sane at this point. He may not be that off on torture though, it has been shown to be a great way to get the information you think you want, and a far less reliable way to get the truth. The figs and mice might be the best approach :) Also Egwene is far from the only good female character, they are all outstanding imo.

The fact that you don’t know which Ajah was abolished (it was the Blue Ajah FYI) really undermines the authenticity of your review. It suggests you don’t know why they’re important, or what Ajah Elaida is in, and the real importance of the political differences between Ajahs and how that’s a major theme of the previous 12 books… Also, how do you not remember Silviana’s name, as the deliverer of all those spankings?! Otherwise, good job 👍🏽

For a first time through it's hard for me to say don't read them at all, for rereads I would skip lol. The ending of Path of Daggers is good, the last chapter of Winters Heart is great, there's literally one thing that happens at the end of Crossroads of Twilight that matters. The rest of those 3 books do virtually nothing to progress the story of our main cast.
