The Garden Ghost Eryngium giganteum

One of the best plants for bees and some other beneficial insects. Sometimes sold as Miss Willmott's Ghost or Silver Ghost. I prefer not to sell it under these names as my plants are seedlings and there is always a tiny degree of variability, so they're not strictly clones.....it is however always worth having. While not a perennial in the truest sense of the word, they self seed so readily they will always be in your garden. It is a prickly little bastard though if your a bit of a girl about such things......I'll probably get into trouble for that remark....The PC police might send me to jail.

How much clay does it tolerate? I have a mix of gritty clay loam and worry it will be too heavy for it? Liatris went all bendy and flopped.

Sow them in the spring Sam, they should come up easily enough. I wouldn't put them anywhere inside, a cod frame if you want cover or a sheltered position outside as fluctuations of temperature are not good for most hardy plants. its actually a biennial, so it dies after flowering in its second year....,however, it usually seeds around so much that you don't notice...they get everywhere in the garden. They also hybridise freely with Eryngium alpinum and the resulting offspring can prove more perennial. Hope this helps.....not heat!

Also Tim....if they are raised by seed there will always be variability, the only really true way of cloning eryngiums is with Root Cuttings...i'll do a film on that sometime....its easy enough. As they are both biennial...meaning they dont live more than two years, they will always revert anyway....because what they do is seed themselves about. I think they are lovely plants especially in evening light. Mine have overhead trees so pull up slightly for light, thus a touch taller. Best wishes. M
