Fab video, thanks. I have Eryngium big blue in my garden so will be doing some root cuttings this winter. absolutely love them too, especially jade frost which I can't seem to get through the winter

You're welcome, I've just had a look at Jade Frost as we've never seen that one before. Those variegated leaves are quite striking, didn't know there were varieties like this available. Hope you have better luck with getting it to survive the winter. Good luck too with your root cuttings.

I don't know why, but I love untangling the roots on pot bound plants. It's almost like they're thanking us! I've not got an Eryngium but when I see them, I always admire how blue they are and the bees love them. Bet you were pleased to find "Cobolt Star" again. I couldn't find London Pride for ages. Had loads of it in my garden In Cornwall. Funnily enough, I too found it when we were on holiday in Scotland! Hope you've both had a lovely long weekend and I bet you didn't come home from the plant hunters fair empty handed!

We're the same Wendy, it's like we can feel the plants' relief by freeing the roots. It was great finding Colbolt Star again and a bonus to talk to the person that bred it. London Pride is another great plant, those dainty flowers are lovely. Glad you found it and what a coincidence it was in Scotland. The plant fair was at Dorothy Clive garden and yes, we did come back with more plants! Just have to make some space for them now, which might be difficult! Hope you had a good weekend too. Xxxx

hi, do u cover all of the top roots with sand ? or just cover around it surface ?

We just cover the top surface with grit but sand would be OK too 👌

Great video i have a couple of well established big blue in my borders can you advise me if possible how to get to the roots to cut some off with damaging it...

Thanks David. I'd use a hand fork and gently move the soil from around one side of the plant. Once you see a good sized root, make a cut close to the plant end so that it detaches and then dig out the rest of the piece of root. Make sure you know which end is which as you will need to plant the cutting the same way it was growing in the ground. Then prepare the cuttings as shown in the video. Hope this helps.

You dont need root cuttings. They spread like crazy on their own. i have dug them up and given them away yet they still persist in my garden.

You must have plants that are well established, that's great. Ours were new last year and we wanted more without waiting 👍

Can you take cuttings any time of the year, as its now November here in the UK.

Now we're getting into the time when the plants go into their dormancy, anytime from now until late winter is an ideal time to take root cuttings of plants grown in the ground. They can be lifted (or left in place and the roots exposed) and the cuttings can be taken. We will be doing this with our Eryngium 'Neptune's Gold' either this month or next.

Firstly, great clear instructions, Thank you. I have a Big Blue with 2 stems, this will be 3yr for me. Is it safe to do a cutting from the plant now, leaving it in the pot and gently forking around? I know it should be done much earlier but it's still pretty cold, however, it now has about 2" of foliage starting on both stems. I did read that they not keen on being tampered with when out of the dormant stage. I'm not prepared to lose this stunning plant, thanks in advance, Richy 😀👍 P.S. Kirkcudbright, been there many times and parents have a caravan up there so might check out Elizabeths nursery next time I visit 🌼

Hi Richy, we've never tried taking root cuttings before in the spring as we usually wait until either later in the year after flowering or in winter. If you want to give it a go, I'd carefully fork around until a sizable root is uncovered. Snip it off carefully. and prepare it as described in the video. I wouldn't take any more than that just in case it affects this years flowering. I'd be interested to know how it turns out so please let us know. Please do check out Elizabeth's nursery in Kirkcudbright, it has some great plants and the walled garden is excellent. @@MadAboutGardening Thank you for a nice reply with information 😀 I had decided after I posted that I wasn't going to risk it, however, I just ordered Eryngium Big Blue, 2x Neptunes Gold and a Magical White from a local Northumberland garden centre. I might still attempt a couple of cuttings but I'm nervous. I'll check out your video of Elizabeth's nursery and for the recommendation I'll recommend the butchers in Kirkcudbright just down the road past the bridge on the left, J Hall & Sons, everything in there I've had was beautiful 😁👍 I've subscribed and will watch the visit vlog now, thank you, regards, Richy 👍

@martianleaderrichy1520 You're very welcome. There will always be the winter for that one but you could try with the new ones before you plant. We really recommend Neptune's Gold. It's changing colours are fantastic. We did some root cuttings of ours in January so hopefully will have lots more for the border. Thanks for the recommendation too 😀

Bees love my large Salvias and Big blue so I'm sure they'll be happy with the new introductions 🐝🐝🐝 I'll probably just do 1 root from each plant as not to annoy them too much. I have a problem with my E.Magical White Lagoon, I didn't stake it up and the single head on main stem has drooped and creased to the point it's turning brown on the crease about 3 leaves down , approx 20" tall plant. I have tied it up but I think it'll come off. If I cut the stem below the damaged area but above the next leaf, will it produce a new stem and continue to grow? 🤔I hope my neglect hasn't ruined it for this year, only bought it about 3-4 weeks ago,3l pot with good roots😒Any advice appreciated if you know, thank you in advance 😆🙌

I would cut the stem like you described below the damage. From memory, I don't think Eryngiums will grow new stems from the stem as they usually come direct from the base but try it first and if nothing happens after a week or so, cut the whole stem down to the ground (unless there are other flowers, in which case leave them to form). Hope this makes sense Richy. Sorry that this has happened as I know how much you are looking forward to the flowers. Take care 😀

@@MadAboutGardening I've trimmed it down as above and tied it up but I noticed there is possible signs that the 2nd but smaller stem may be going to produce so maybe all is not lost. After that I ordered 2 more 3l pots and an E.planum Magical Anita 3l (half price), collect Fri or Sat 😀👍I'm not buying any more until I visit Elizabeth's nursery in July! I'll monitor this one and update on what comes of it, thank you 😀👍

@@martianleaderrichy1520 That’s great news Richy, at least you may get some flowers from that. E. Magical Anita looks like another good one and you can’t complain for half price! I'm sure you will come back with some treasures when you go to Kircudbright! We’ve got another garden tour on yesterday which shows our E. Neptunes Gold root cuttings. I can’t remember if I told you the story with these or not but I dug around the plant in the border in February looking for roots and as I couldn’t find any I dug the plant out. Unfortunately some of the roots broke off and remained in the ground! I dug them out and as I couldn’t identify which way was which, I did horizontal cuttings on these.
