How to plant Sea Holly (Eryngium) from bare root
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In today's video I share with you how to grow Blue Sea Holly (Eryngium) from bare root. When they are in bare root it can be confusing as to which end is up. I am starting these in containers to ensure they were all viable. Sea Holly, also known as Eryngium is a zone 4 to 9 perennial. They have an interesting shape and color that can add a lot of interest to your garden. Sea Holly can also be used as a cut flower or you can use them as a dry flower.

I just bought 8 roots from our Walmart for our brand new house and I’m a total gardening newbie and these roots looked beyond confusing when I opened the bags! 😂 thank you so much for showing these being planted now I feel far more prepared!

Thanks for watching! 😊 That little spruce is cute.
They're looking great I grew these last year I was fascinated how the foliage first comes through but the n the plant grows totally differently in texture. They're great, this year they are growing through so strong and much bigger 😀

Very interesting. Thank you for sharing. They do look kind of alien like when you plant them.

Yes they do. Looking forward to them to add some interest - assuming they survive the winter.
Excellent! Good idea to pot them up first 👌 I planted mine directly in the yard, and didn’t have much luck with them 😕

@@MonicaKatie Welcome 💖
Good advice about the hairy bits! My bare root packaging didn't have any potting instructions (Wilko - UK). Thanks

Just got some from Walmart and I’m glad someone made a video of what to do with them, thank you! Glad to know to pot them first, I would have planted them right into the yard. Where did you keep them in the pots, on a covered porch or out in the open in full sun? How often did you water them?

Glad it was helpful. You don't really need to pot them up first. I only did that because I wanted to make sure they were going to grow and I could keep track of them better - plus I was going to have landscaping work done so didn't want them distured. I had the pots on my covered porch where I only get partial sun. I used pre-moistened potting soil when first potting them up. Then I watered as it needed. You just need to check your soil - stick your finger in. If the soil is not moist then it needs to be watered. Once I was ready, I planted them out in the landscape. I put them in an area that gets about 6 or 8 hours of sun. Hope that helps.

They spread like crazy. Good stiff forms in a bouquet. The blue is nt as blue as in the catalog photos. They are more silvery blue.

Yeah, they are a bit silver purpleish. I have learned to cut them back before they go to seed to control it but still get some popping up in the bed. I dug out a bunch and those roots go deep!

Never tried smelling the leaves but the plant isn’t known for its scent
Hi After potting up your sea Holly, did you water them well or lightly? and how often did you water as they were growing? They look great

When you water make sure there is good drainage and let the whole plant become saturated and run out. The plant should stay damp not dry.

In the pots I watered when the soil would look dry. After transplanting them in the garden I watered a few times but then just let mother nature take care of it - or when we ran the sprinklers. They are pretty drought tolerant.

These are really prickly....Deer resistant you bet!

Yes, they sure are pinchy! The deer (or perhaps rabbits) have eaten all the basel leaves but the flowers have never been eaten.
Does it spread? Just bought 6 packs at Costco.
