You actually explained the spiking rule very well. A QB can spike the ball right after the snap to stop the clock legally, but "Intentional grounding" is designed to make it so a QB can't just throw it out of bounds when they are about to be sacked. There is more to the rule, but you have the correct idea. Also, Al Lerner was Randy's father.

I’m a Browns fan, I live in Cleveland and although I wasn’t at the game, I remember watching that disaster on TV. Our replay system has gotten better, they’ve changed the way reviews are done and there is more oversight by the league on those reviews. Al Lerner is Randy Lerners father and he actually helped Art Modell take the Browns from Cleveland and then he was granted the rights to pay for and own the team when they returned in 1999. When Al died, Randy owned the browns for a time along with owning Aston Villa..but has since sold the team to new ownership....who coincidentally have now purchased a soccer team in our MLS ( Columbus Crew ). An incomplete pass stops the clock, so that’s the purpose of the spike however any pass thrown from within the width of the tackles has to land within the general area of an eligible receivers and/or past the line of scrimmage and the spike is the only play not completely beholden to this rule. It’s almost for the same reason that a center half can’t flip the ball up from the ground and nod it back to the keeper to catch it.

So, the spike rule is quite interesting and you kind of got the explanation correct. The NFL doesn't want the QB to just be able to throw the ball away willy nily whenever he feels he might get tackled, or they risk losing one of the most exciting plays in football, the QB sack. In order for the QB to be able to throw the ball away legally, one of two things must happen; Either the QB throws in the general vicinity of a player who is eligible to catch the football (not the big fat guys blocking), or he must scramble 5 or 6 yards to either side of the field and then throw it (outside the tackles), otherwise an Intentional Grounding penalty is assessed against the QB. However, if this rule were to be enforced at all times, then you would take away another exciting part of the game which is spiking the ball to stop the clock. So, what the NFL did was amend the Intentional Grounding rule to allow for spikes. In this amendment, the rule clearly states that the QB must take the snap, move a few steps back and immediately spike the ball, otherwise it will be considered Intentional Grounding. That double pump is clearly Intentional Grounding and quite a few penalties have been assessed against QBs who did the same thing, including penalties that caused the team to lose the game right then and there. The fact is, the refs blew this call in the worst possible way they could have, and it almost caused a riot. The fans know these rules, and they know when the refs fuck up. The NFL and the refs know that the fans know it. Why the fuck they decided to go back to a previous play and review it is beyond me, and in my opinion, the refs hold most of the blame for what happened here. The NFL front office is to blame for pinning the entire thing on the fans and saying virtually nothing about the refs gigantic fuck-up. One positive thing has come about because of it though, they have never repeated this mistake since then. One more thing; This game is the reason sports fans in America can no longer enjoy beverages in glass bottles in American stadiums. Everything is served in plastic, or aluminum cans.

  • @williamjordan5554

It used to be that to stop the clock because you had no more timeouts, the quarterback would intentionally throw an incomplete pass in the vicinity of a receiver, which always stopped the clock automatically. This usually involved placing a receiver close to the sideline and throwing it over his head. For some reason, this was changed to simply throwing the ball at the ground without any other motions from the quarterback. If a quarterback faked a spike and then spiked it, that was illegal. Some teams took advantage of the defence's expectations and actually threw downfield to a single receiver while every other player froze in place.

Spiking the ball into the ground stops the clock and allows teams to save a timeout. But the spike also counts as a down played so that spike was on first down and the next play would be second down. Intentional grounding is a penalty called on the QB when the passer throws a forward pass that has no realistic chance of being completed. So the penalty is called if the QB is standing in the pocket and the ball does not go past the line of scrimmage or no receiver is in the area where the ball lands. If called, the penalty is ten yards and a loss of down. This is in place to prevent QBs from just randomly throwing the ball to avoid a sack. As long as the ball gets thrown past the line of scrimmage, regardless of either of the other two reasons, no penalty can be called. The Jags coach is saying that because the QB looked to have faked the spike, which is allowed and has led to several famous late game TDs being scored, and then proceeded to spike it, intentional grounding should have been called. As for the replay, whenever a close call like that happens, almost every team will try and snap the ball as quickly as possible to not allow the other team to challenge or have the replay booth call for a review. Once the ball is snapped on the next play, the previous play can not be reviewed, no matter how wrong it is. So yeah, the ball looked to have touched the ground, which would make the pass incomplete and give the win to the Jags. But this should not have happened as the refs went against the very rules they enforce. Alluding to your story about the Champions League game, this NFlLsituation would be like if the goal was scored, the ball was taken back to midfield, and then play resumed but after the first pass, the refs went to VAR and called off the goal.

In gridiron football, intentional grounding is a violation of the rules where "A Passer...throws a forward pass without a realistic chance of completion."[1] This typically happens when a quarterback about to be sacked passes the ball toward an area of the field with no eligible receiver. Were it not for this rule, the quarterback could easily turn the sack into an incomplete pass which, by rule, would advance the ball back to the line of scrimmage and stop the clock.

Spiking the ball stops a running clock when the offense doesn't have time outside left or they want to sacrifice a play and save a timeout. From end to end of the offensive line makes up the pocket. Any time the qb throws the ball away in the pocket without a receiver near by it's intentional grounding. It saves from people taking a lost down instead of a sack. I'm a football coach and would love to help yall

Never thought i’d hear a brit know of the sporting goods store modells!! That’s a north eastern regional chain of sporting goods stores that unfortunately went out of business a few years back. Good catch on Art Modell having the same last name as the owner of Modells! Though unfortunately they’re not the same family, though both are originally from NY so small world i guess. Art Modell‘s family was in the Champagne business before he bought into the NFL, understandable to think it would be a sporting goods store tycoon though that is far more logical lmao.

In 1984 the Baltimore Colts moved to Indianapolis because the city of Baltimore wouldn't build a new stadium. Then the Brown's owner wanted a new stadium but the city of Cleveland wouldn't build it. So Model moved the team to Baltimore who would build them a stadium. Pretty ironic!

What I don't understand is why the NFL wouldn't give Baltimore an expansion team and it took a decade to get a new team to the city, but Browns got their new team almost immediately after. And Browns fans still want to play victim. Baltimore looks like the bad guys for "stealing" the team, but nobody talks about the Colts moving.

You mentioned teams moving to different cities... how's this for a head scratcher? In 1961 the (old) Washington Senators moved to Minnesota and became the Twins. Also in 1961 the League expanded and added 2 new teams.. one of them was the (new) Washington Senators. Instead of putting an expansion team in Minnesota, an existing team moved to Minnesota and was replaced that year with an expansion team.

The thing is the reffing in football is way more complex and they have way more to look out for than in soccer. I think that’s why they don’t just get fired automatically because it’s understood that mistakes are gonna happen. BUT there have been some egregious cause in just the past few months and everyone is beginning to have enough of the referees determining the outcome of games. Unfortunately there is no easy fix. My team, the Saints, were on the receiving in of what has generally become agreed upon as the worst call (actually a no call) in NFL history. It costed us a spot in the SuperBowl. When it happened (or didn’t happen) even the commentators couldn’t believe it. The other team that committed the foul (that didn’t get called) couldn’t believe it. It was an absolute stain on the game. We ended up losing in overtime as a result, which is on the team, obviously, but that would have never came to fruition had the original penalty been called.

I am a Browns and City fan, and you analogy of the reversal of the Sterling goal is a pretty good one. Only difference being VAR in the City match just got that call wrong, where in this Browns game the VAR call is correct, but it is fundamentally breaking the rules of the system. Both are still some of the worst officiating mistakes I've ever witnessed. And no, the referees in the NFL are basically untouchable, that ref went on to do Superbowls and Playoff games for years to come only retiring in 2017 I believe.

Takes way longer than that would take in the US, though. Their highway system isn’t that great in terms of directness and accessibility everywhere. Not like the US where you can drive from Florida to California on one road.

I’ve watched this closely, and I used to think the browns were cheated, as you are not to review a replay of a previous play after the next snap. However, the ref said the “replay buzz prior to the snap,” which means the ref should’ve stopped the game for a review before the ball was ever snapped. A similar thing is used as a tactic to stop the opposing team from making a field goal all the time. Seconds before the kicking team goes for a field goal, the opposing team may call a timeout before the ball is snapped. If they do this, even just 1 second before the snap, even if the kick was made, they reverse the call and redo the play because timeout was called before the snap. So if they buzzed the ref for a replay prior to the snap, they were 100% right to reverse the call.

The refs said the booth buzzed them for replay prior to the spike play. The call often comes close to the snap especially in that situation where the offense is rushing to stop the clock and/or avoid replay. Thus, by their explanation, the spike play never happened. The receiver clearly did not make the catch so that was the correct call. The main question in my opinion is whether the refs blew their whistle before the snap on the spike play. If they did not then the play would count and it’s too late to review the catch. Either way throwing bottles is a bad look.
