They only penalize "half the distance to the goal" when then penalty yardage is greater than the distance to the goalline. If you are on the 10 yard line and you get a 15 yard penalty, they only mark off half the distance to the goal (5 yards in this case).

The only thing that confuses me is that the ball was down at the 38...15 yard penalty brings it to the 23...another 15 yards should've been 1st down at the 8. The 1st penalty didn't bring them within the 15 yard mark. What am I missing here? Did the ref just make a mistake?

That’s not quite right. Half the distance is when the penalty yardage is more than half the distance to the GL. If you get a personal foul on the 24 it’s a 12 yard penalty. Only exception is defensive pass interference is always a spot penalty - in the endzone ball is spotted on the one yard line.

California had 4 football franchises in total but now down to 3. The Rams (go Rams) where in LA moved to St. Louis then Moved back. The Chargers also moved to LA from San Diego. But nobody really cared in LA about the charges because San Diego is about a 2 hour drive down the 5 freeway. And a lot of the San Diego Chargers fan base is in LA anyway. LA didn’t have a football team for about 20 years then Boom got two again. We used to have the Rams and Raiders too because the Raiders kept bouncing from Oakland to la. But now they are in Las Vegas. Good riddance I say. So now CA has the La Rams and Chargers and San Francisco 49ers. Gross 🤮.

  • @jrthmc29

    @jrthmc29

    3 жыл бұрын

Technically UNTRUE. Allow me to explain why this is false and you are incorrect. In 1995, owner Art Modell, who had purchased the Browns in 1961, announced plans to move the team to Baltimore. After threats of legal action from the city of Cleveland and fans, a compromise was reached in early 1996 that allowed Modell to establish the Baltimore Ravens as a new franchise while retaining the contracts of all Browns personnel. The Browns' intellectual property, including team name, logos, training facility, and history, were kept in trust and the franchise was regarded by the NFL as suspended for three seasons. So technically speaking the Browns front office, players and staff left and became a new franchise know as the Baltimore Ravens. Thereby leaving the "Cleveland Browns" in Cleavland. Also when the Browns resumed play in 1999 the club's roster was re-stocked via an expansion draft. Seeing as how the team still was based in Cleveland haviing truly never left the Browns were not technically considered to be an expansion franchise by the NFL. Now you know the whole truth rather than the false information you have believed for the past 22 years now. Go and tell all your friends 😁

Regarding the supporting teams: many teams who move have trouble getting new fans in their new city, but they usually move to cities that didn’t have a team beforehand and the people there had supported another team. Many people support their college teams more than their nfl teams especially if they went or currently attend the college. People also support college teams based on location (I live in Ohio and I’m an Ohio state fan even though no one in my family went there). If people move, they don’t typically become fans of their new area’s nfl/college team and will stick to supporting the teams they always have.

21:08 The whole penalization rule of saying "half the distance to the goal" is all determined based on what type of penalty it is, because they all grade differently in terms of yards and some giving free first downs. i.e. since the first penalty was for 15 yards the new spot would have been 15 yards further from the end of the play, but there was a second one that would've been for 15 yards but the ball was less than 30 yards from scoring a touch down so they took half the distance to the goal; this goes for any penalty that is longer that is half the distance to the goal.

The penalties against Aaron Donald at the end of the video was one 15 yard penalty which moved San Fran into the Red Zone, so the second 15 yard penalty is changed to half the distance to the goal. And LA now has the Rams and Chargers as teams, and the 49ers are the only other team in California since the Raiders moved to Vegas. When the player is ejected the team can play another player, but Aaron Donald may be the best defensive player ever to play which will obviously effect the team when he got booted.

Since everyone is echoing the Rams questions, I'll go ahead and clarify that you were originally correct about the hats. The referee throws his hat to signal a penalty if he has already used his flag to signal a previous penalty on the same play. Since there are several referees on the field, it isn't common for a ref to toss a hat, since another ref could toss his flag to signal a second penalty. Safe to say if a referee tosses his hat, something egregious has happened. In the particular case from the video, the player was originally called for unsportsmanlike conduct when the flag was thrown. The hat came off for a separate unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the same player. Two unsportsmanlike conducts in one game automatically results in an ejection, similar to a yellow/red card sequence.

The Rams used to be in LA before moving to St Louis in the 90’s. So there was a fan base already in LA before the Rams moved back. But when a NFL team comes to town, most people choose to support that team, even if they already had a team maybe out of state or in another city. Our lesson for today: The “cleats” on American Football shoes are often about 3/4 inch long and about the same diameter at the base. (They’re conical with a truncated tip.) They are made of hard plastic and have a small steel cover on the end. They are also removable so the they can be replaced as they wear down or to change the cleat length to meet field conditions. They hurt like hell when a 280 pounder steps on your calf, or better yet, your hand.

Oh, by the way, there was a defensive coach, Gregg Williams, who put bounties out for injuring opposing players. When that came out, he got suspended and lots of players got fined for participating. Basically, the NFL's positions are 'injuries happen, but if you're actively trying to cause them, we WILL punish you'. Of course, as with my statement on steroids, there might be people who just play as dirty as they can get away with. (The defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, yes I Googled his name to spell it, _was_ definitely one of those guys, and old age MAY have mellowed him out but I'm doubtful.)

The reason why the catch at 7:28 is controversial is because when you catch the ball you have to make a football move (running/ jumping/ stiff arm) to consider having possession as a receiver, if you catch and you're falling to the ground without making a football move with the ball you have to maintain possession of the football with two feet inbounds and you can't let the ball touch the ground before you catch it or as you catch, or in this case you have to keep firm control of the ball (no bobbling) if it touches the ground right after you catch it.

Penalties can vary in yardage, depending on the severity. Usually they're 5, 10 or 15 yards (the latter if it's a personal foul), but a defensive pass interference can be a 100y penalty at worst, because the ball is placed at the spot of the foul. When a player gets ejected, the team still plays with 11 men on the field, but the player is out. In case of Aaron Donald, that meant the Rams had to play without the arguably best defensive player in the league. There have been incidences of targeting (purposefully injuring an opposing player), this led to the Bountygate scandal that cost the Saints a few draft picks and got players and coaches suspended. In the US, a team usually has a large fan base in it's home town but also some fans in other places. This is especially the case if the team has been in a different city before. e.g. the Rams have been in L.A. previously until moving to St. Louis and now moving back. Many teams have resettled elsewhere and even re-branded. There are also expansion teams that have been added to the league later and that didn't exist previously. If people don't have a home team, they often pick a team they can identify with or that is playing attractive football. It's also very common to be fan of a player and cheer for his team as well, if he's not on yours. This especially happens when a player from your favorite college team gets drafted by an NFL team you usually wouldn't support.

So I'm a Los Angeles native. The Rams were originally from Cleveland back in the 1930s until 1945. They moved to Los Angeles in 1945 and have stayed there for decades representing Los Angeles until 1980 when they moved to Anaheim (similar to how the NY Giants do not play in NY, but in a nearby city). They left Los Angeles in 1994 for St Louis. There are many older fans here in Los Angeles, myself included, that packed away all their Rams gear and shoved it into storage and recently pulled them out when the Rams returned to Los Angeles a couple years ago. Additionally, the Chargers moved up to be a Los Angeles team, but no one really cares about them. A lot of football fans here in Los Angeles, myself included, wanted the Raiders to return to the city of Angels, but NFL politics barred the Raiders from returning to Los Angeles and it's STRONK Raider Nation fan base.

It's only half the distance to the goal when the normal penalty in this case is 15 yards and the ball is closer to the goal than 15 yards. No such thing as a penalty longer than 15 yards unless its a point of where it's called like pass interference.

  • @thumper7047

"Half the Distance to the Goal" means the yards required would take the ball into the goal. SO if you are at the 2-yard line and get a 15-yard penalty, it will be "Half the distance to the goal (and an automatic first down - which may hurt more)" So it'll actually only be 1 yard.

The thing is the rule on replays is if they don't have clear evidence that the call needs to be reversed they won't. That one was close but the refs decided they couldn't reverse the call because it wasn't clear if he had lost possession on the way down or not.

The "half the distance to the goal" penalty in the 49ers Rams game was because the ball would be less than 15 yards from the goal; you can't give the offense 15 yards if they're on the 10 yard line, so they give them half the distance to the goal instead. So, if a team is on the 1 and the defense commits a 15 yards personal foul, they're actually only penalized half a yard (and an automatic first down).

I think in American Football, it can ruin the cohesion between some units, because it is detrimental. But, in this case, the player that got DQed is the best player at his position in the entire league, so it is a huge thing if it happens early in the game(although in this case it was at the end of the game).

As for having a thug do some damage to the other team...I'm pretty sure the league would come down on a team that did that, but also you're "starting" people who aren't as good. It's such a physical game anyway, the starters on the other side might not GET hurt, and they'll definitely put more points on the board (if offense) or get the ball back faster (if defense).
