Cutter was supposed to stay until the end of the game, but Graham McTavish had to leave to film The Hobbit so they wrote his character out of the story. They were planning to bring him back in Uncharted 4, but once Amy left they ditched him and Chloe.

No, no, no, no, UC3 gets into higher gear only like halfway through. Before that you've got introductions, cutscenes, dialogue, pub, young Drake level (basically an interactive cutscene with 0 replayability), sneaking in a castle, sneaking in the sewers, etc. Then later there's walking through the desert for 5 minutes straight, running through the market on drugs, etc. UC2 was a high-octane blockbuster with a set-piece after set-piece, UC3 felt like a slogfest compared to that. This is where ND started to take the cinematic presentation over gameplay approach, and it continued into UC4, unfortunately. Focusing more on story in UC3 wasn't even worth it, since somehow they managed to screw the story up with plot-holes, recycled story lines, and fake-outs. The game was buggy, since they clearly ran out of time to ship it on 11.1.11., and I often found myself stuck in geometry, or thrown through a wall by a grenade, for instance. ND even managed to make the hand-to-hand combat worse in UC3, since the button used for grabbing enemies was the same one you used to roll out of danger (O)- so Nate would lounge straight into enemy fire when you needed to hide, which was my main cause of death on my 'crushing' difficulty playthrough. UC4 has like 8 barely interactive on-rail levels with 0 replayability back-to-back in the beginning, which will take you around 3-4hours to beat. Playing through them is a drag even the first time around, and replaying them is straight up torture for me (that's why I played it twice for the platinum, and I'm never playing it again). Then there's a lot of huge empty open spaces, that are seemingly only there to inflate the 'time to beat' stat. There's an abundance of forced walking segments, and lots of those annoying barely interactive story levels strung throughout the game, too. There's only like 28 enemy encounters (all accessible from the main menu) in a 25hr-long game, and they're not spaced-out evenly - you'll get 2 hours of walking and climbing, then a couple of combat encounters in a row, then it's back to 2 hours of boredom, and then there's ~10 of them in a row at the end, and you're sick of them, too. This further drags the pacing down, and there's like what - 3? 4 set pieces in the entire game? And the best one was shown at some E3 presentation? UC4, or UC3 simply can't hold a candle to UC2 in that regard. Every single UC4 review, that I've seen/read, mentions pacing issues. It depends on the person how annoying it's going to be for them, but for me it's just unbearable. UC2 is still the best in the series, with all its flaws - it was a fun game first, and a story/acting/motion capture showcase, later. These roles have unfortunately been reversed since then, when it comes to ND games (TLOU1 was still a great game, though).

When walking to the green door in London, Sully actually says he was tempted to take the money and walk, to which Cutter responds "Yeah, You have a lousy poker face mate." or something similar, alluding to the fact that the money offered was real and they did just want to draw Marlowe out. It's the exact opposite of this, barring the fact that it's not complicated. The combat is slow, forces you into it whenever you get too close to an enemy, is an absolute bitch to get out of, and provides you zero I frames to work with. The end result is a system that's a complete repetitive pace killer at best and a system that gets you unfairly killed in gun fights at worst.

Same bro, replaying the 3 games for platinum I find myself dreading a lot of UC1 and 3 as I find a lot of it boring to replay but UC2 was a joy to replay, every chapter is great and fun, and when it's getting dull it completely switches up. For example, we spend a lot of time in the Tibetan City and then boom, we are on a train in the jungle/mountains. UC3 just seemed to throw us from dull location like the London Underground to the next dull location e.g the shipyard. The game felt far less vibrant than UC2 to me. Idk I LOVED UC2 and UC3 on my ps3 in 2012. But replaying them as an 18 year old on my PS5, Uncharted 2 still holds up and is a 10/10 (platinumed 2 days ago) whereas UC3 felt like a dull experience (refinished it an hour ago). I'm not enjoying grinding for the platinum either.

You highlighting that there was an internal struggle within Naughty Dog when creating this game really hits the nail on the head. Like mentioned in multiple interviews after uncharted 2, naughty dog split up into two development teams that either went to go work on the last of us or uncharted 3 and the majority hopped over to the new project. With a smaller group left to complete uncharted 3. They wanted U3 to be the most ambitious uncharted to date but since they were not working at full capacity the quality, story and scheduling suffered for it. You can tell they were crunched for time when you’re thrown into random set pieces that side track from the story just so they can have the cruise ship sink. Instead of building the set pieces around the story the story was built around the set pieces to drive the marketing of the biggest adventure yet which resulted in a very in cohesive mess. Don’t get me wrong I love the story because it really had a lot of substance the other 2 didn’t have before it they finally dove deeper into the relationships which the other games glossed over. I really believe if they focused on the story rather than cramming all the set pieces together that uncharted 3 would have been the best.

That makes a lot of sense. I notice after re-playing the other games 3 is the one that holds up the least in my opinion. Just in terms of gameplay and polish, you can tell there wasn't as much time put in. Like the way the characters move during gameplay is much more jerky and the gunplay doesn't seem as fluid. Like I never noticed on my first playthrough, but the enemies don't react to you shooting them. Like I pump 30 bullets into one guy while he's running and he just keeps going into cover until you get the last shot on him. They put in some cool animations for Nate when walking around like you can do a slow turn where he looks around before turning completely. Or just in general he has different animations for when he's tired or moving quickly. But overall the traversal just felt less fluid. I still remember LOVING this game when it came out but for sure there are parts that don't hold up as well as the others.

I remember being quite impressed by the first Uncharted game from a technical perspective since it was one of the first PS3 games I've played. I enjoyed it enough to be excited for a sequel though it has its issues. Uncharted 2 is a game that I replayed multiple times over. It's a game you could come back to, lay back and enjoy the thrill of it. I was looking forward to Uncharted 3 and I enjoyed it for what it was, but I felt like there was something missing or that it doesn't feel right compared to its predecessors. I remember being extremely confused by its pacing and its questionable writing. A game with a lot of promises and a lot going for, but with a half-assed and undercooked execution.

The main reason what makes Uncharted 3 so enjoyable and for many others who share fond memories within this chapter of the series is the Multiplayer. The majority of casual players to competitive players to cliphunters to editors all debate that Uncharted 3 is one of the greatest multiplayers to date. The campaign was decent but due to the Last of Us being worked on, I can see where this game goes south in the campaign. Aside from that, the MP was phenomenal and probably the main reason why a lot of people adore this game especially those from the cliphunting and comp community that it had.

After coming from the PS2 to the PS3 that had already matured and was in its late lifecycle the graphics blew me away. The thing that I would argue about Uncharted 3 is the action sequences are arguably the best in the series just because of how much you get. Everytime I think about replaying the game I just remember the different action sequences we’re going to get halfway through the game which for me triumphs over the other games for example, the boat part, that boat parkour area and then chasing after that big boat that ends up sinking but straight after you’re sent to the plane section and then the desert section where there’s a whole shoot out and car chase scene. It’s all very intense and compact in a short amount of time and it really doesn’t give you a break but I really do enjoy the adrenaline rush and I genuinely never bore of any of the action sequences in uncharted 3. In uncharted 2 for example, most notably the parts I remember is the train, village shoot out and the final battle. Everything else to me wasn’t on the same calibre of excitement as uncharted 3 gave me despite of how flawed it was. Uncharted 3 to me just remains that one jam packed action sequence game that realistically makes no sense but the excitement of it kind of makes you forget all about the plot holes in a way

I suspect that is because while there is story and lore, the only time I see the story mentioned it's the Dom's wife scene. And while it popularized what shooters are today. There really aren't that many differences between gears 1 and gears 5 from a gameplay perspective. Improvements and the B.B and more.B did turn out to be true. But beyond that, most people play it have fun, and them move on because there aren't those same level of set-piece moments or story that sticks with many people.

@@Bacbi Idk, I haven’t played 4 or 5 so Idk, but the campaigns between 1, 2, and 3 are seriously different. 1 is vaguely horror with a lot of darkness everywhere, although the characters aren’t that important, and sluggish controls (like Resi 4). 2 is much more action/story about Doms wife, more than Marcus, and controls are a lot less sluggish, but stil pretty sluggish. 3 is Much more Action-Packed with an emphasis on Marcus’s backstory, and significantly smoother controls. The games have a lot of differences that make them different (in my eyes). 1 & 3 have believable level design, while 2 doesn’t really. 1 & 2 are incredibly gray and black, while 3 has a crap-ton of saturation. 1 has few set-pieces, 2 has a lot, but they're kinda janky, 3 has some great ones. 1 just had a basic shooting system, 2 added a few guns and when someone gets knocked done, you can use them as a shield (and horde mode), and 3 added smoother gameplay, a few new guns, and Beast mode. 1 stays mainly in a dark night in a street, 2 stays mainly underground, while 3 has radically different ones like remnants of a city after a bomb, a Mad Max-esque desert, lush Jungles, and ships in the middle of the sea Also yeah there is absolutely no lore. Just this isn’t Earth but Sera, the world was running out of resources, then they found this new thing that started fighting between COG and UIRC, then Emergence Day, where Locust came to fight, then Marcus killed their leader. Then like 20 yrs later they came back. This is nothing compared to Halo. Halo has like 5,000 years of detailed history, while Gears barely has 150, while half of it is completely unknown.

My primary issue with UC3 was that it lacked the sense of 'place' that the first two games had. In UC1 you're on the island. In UC2 it felt like after the Borneo/Istanbul prologue, you get to Nepal and then you're moving forward through a continuous location into a final goal. "Lost Legacy" was the same. I felt like I'd been on a journey in these games. I remember them like they were places I'd been to. In UC3, the continual jumps from cool location to cool location left me feeling like I had watched an action movie, rather than feeling like I had been transported somewhere. I think because stuff like the cruise ship and the flaming chateau were such technical undertakings and had to be decided on very early in the process, the studio had to shoehorn them into the story. Sure, they look super cool, but they didn't really keep me in the story. And yes, there are a lot of plot holes and utter nonsense - particularly with puzzles that don't make any sense in context or traps which could only ever be sprung once, yet miraculously remain unsprung until Nate arrives. The main plot issue I had with it was with the ending. In UC1 the bad guy takes El Dorado and you stop him. In UC2 the bad guy captures the Tree and you stop him. But in UC3, Nate actually stops the bad guys *before* they get what they're after. You never fully experience the power you've kept them from getting because you actually get there in time. It was comparatively unsatisfying.

I'm surprised at how much the phone bit in Syria bothered you, I thought it was a great joke and another top tier "Uncharted"-esque character moment for these guys. Cutter's short screen time in U3 accomplishes so much to the point where you have no qualms questioning if he's a worthy part of the team, and moments like the phone scene are why. The phone scene in my opinion also doesn't detract at all from later moments of actual tension/suspense. The fakeout moment with Sully near the end shook me the first time I saw it, and I loved how it literally comes out of nowhere, but feels organic. Yes, the overall Sully foreshadowing throughout the game culminates in what ultimately could be argued as a non sequitur, but I will never forget my initial shock at seeing what I thought was one of my beloved characters getting shot and killed right in front of Nate. U3 overall just has the most standout moments for me; the set pieces are bar none, keeping the game's pace brisk, and engaging. The writers also found ways to sneak in character moments that keep that pace, but accomplish so much through the dialogue and delivery (every Nate/Elena scene in U3 is magic). Things don't always need to be explained wholeheartedly; and this game's dialogue proves that through nuance, context clues, etc. that expositing or "showing" is not always the right route to take. Uncharted as a series has always been character driven first and foremost, and U3 is that in a nutshell.

When you start saying things like "It was the executives at ND that made changes, not the director, in an effort to make it more like The Last Of Us." and stuff like that... you need to supple a source. For one, The Last Of Us wouldn't even be released for 2 full years so there's no way they're trying to make Uncharted into a game that doesn't exist yet, and who's impact hadn't been made. Two, it's an entirely different lead team. Maybe post a screenshot of an article (which in itself doesn't mean it's true, but it at least supplies a bibliographical source). Amy Henning never said that... About Uncharted 3 (she did say that about U4, though). So it feels like you're conflating things to suit your narrative (something you have a history of). I only say that because you kind of have a history of mixing your own theories with disreputable sources, making it hard to suss out what's fact and what you've added to... or just adding more to stories than exists in articles, interviews and texts. And I know almost everyone does that, and I give them the same advice because it's not how journalism should be done.

Honestly, I thought the same. Uncharted 3 is not really darker either and I personally never got that impression on day one purchase. The story is raising the stake as many project sequels do. It's Indiana Jones 3. Additionally, the biggest problem I have with this review is that the opinion is: supernatural is silly. This is why games aren't so replayable anymore, because they're trying to be so serious art. Searching ancient civilization supposed to lead to supernatural. I want my castles and spiders and supernatural and creative ideas put in a believable or a fantasy looking place.

@@turbulonTV here's my thing... Luke is more than entitled to his opinion, and I enjoy hearing them, even if I think he has a bad take, because hearing different perspectives is a great way to both braoden and hone/fine-tune your own perspective. But I think there should be a clear separation between fact and opinion, and sometimes that's where Luke can drop the ball. That's why I said showing a screenshot of an article that you used is a great way to bolster what you're saying and separate it from any opinions you might hold. I know ND basically stole Uncharted 4 from Amy Henning and pushed her out of ND when U4 was well into development, and that Druckmann took over and did approach things from a more "grounded" (in comparison to the previous 3 Uncharted games) POV. And it's entirely possible that her original vision for Uncharted 3 was also impacted by the executives over at ND. But I have never heard that about U3 (and I follow Amy Henning, Druckmann, and ND fairly closely), and I think I would have. But it doesn't add up that they would take their (arguably) biggest IP of all time and try to fashion it after an unproven entity (TLoU1) that was still over 2 years away from completion/release. Where's the logic and reasoning of that? _"Let's take the best thing we've ever done and one of the most well-received franchises in gaming history and try to make it like a game that isn't even out/completed yet... despite the fact that it might flop."_ Where do they do that at? If anything they would have tried to make TLoU1 as much like Uncharted as they possibly could. And Luke does things like this at times. And the rule of thumb is _if you have to lie, exaggerate, or inject conjecture to prove a point, you don't really a point worth proving._

Haven't played and liked one since I was in my late teens (bloodborne was excellent though) . I tried FF15 and didn't like it. But I'm glad it exists. My point is games are just that: games. They are fun and can do things reality can't. This fad of 'grounded' is frankly terrible and conditioning the consumer's perception of what good games are. Calling something that's not grounded silly is silly as watching horror movies or sitting down to play a realistic pretentious simulation rather than doing it yourself in real life. Variety is spice of life. Every now and again, we need something light hearted, funny, cartoony or creative to take a way with a smile. A healthy human mind goes through moods like you would music. Uncharted 3 has the best soundtrack, my favourite environment and theme (the middle eastern setting), the characters are as good as ever, but the story just missed the mark towards the end imo. it would be my dream that if they ever remake this game (and looking at the state of the industry and naughty dog it wouldnt be surprising) that they really fix these issues, and make the story more akin to Uncharted 4 and made it make sense. Also include some uncharted 4 stealth sections. if they changed the soundtrack id revolt

Revisiting this game makes me think that in one of the original drafts had a big sequence that would explain the supernatural element to be where Talbots ability comes from. I think that it supposed to be drawn from the jar, and that he had gained the power of the Djinn via some sort of power passed down through generations to Talbot from somebody who lived in the city. He becomes mortal when the jar is broken and the city is crumbling because his power source was always being drawn from there his whole life. This is also why when you shoot him as he grabs Sully at the end, he takes a couple shots to be killed because his power is fading away. Additionally, the group Nathan meets in the desert could have also been descended from the people who lived in the city, and so made them feel obligated to protect it because they knew of the Djinn’s power. Obviously when the higher ups interfered, the story got scrambled and we didn’t get Talbots full story. While I’m only spitballing, it would be cool to see a small DLC like the Far Cry 6 Vaas DLC or a mini series similar to the ‘Eye of Indra’ that builds upon Talbots character and or the story of the Djinn.

Strongly disagree on most points in this vid. The melee combat was really fun at the time considering in uncharted 1 and 2 you don’t have much control of the fighting but in three you could fight multiple people at once and on top of better animations you could take peoples weapons and keep fighting (this was a first back in the day). All that on top of the big set pieces and the more in depth break down of sully and nates relationship and this game was pretty dam good. I do agree that the magic sections were annoying and not explained tho. Also you didn’t get to play the multiplayer and co op which were both really great so the game had the huge story on top of an actually really deep multiplayer with tons of dlc and free updates. Also the pirates on the ship didn’t want to kill Nate because they wanted to trap him again and get the info on iram.

Uncharted 3 is literally a copy and paste of Uncharted 2, beat for beat - from the reveal of the same supernatural beings at the end to the crumbling bridge that leads to the destruction of the city. Only, not as good. The horses bit is a re-skinned version of the convoy trucks in 2, after again meeting some native from the area. Yawn. They even re-used the Sully fake out death yet again, not to mention the whole cruise ship scene where Sully wasn’t even there was utterly pointless. In the game for set piece sake. Without advancing the plot forward, and Drake just so magically ending up right where he needed to.Terrible pacing, with two halves that feel disjointed. To say one enjoyed this more than 2, when 2 did it first and with tighter writing and overall higher quality, is a tad wee bit ludicrous.

I agree with the overuse of the melee mechanics, having enemies rush you in a gunfight just to lock you into combat was annoying and you can't effectively get a quick kill shot on them right away when you are locked into melee combat, especially if it's a brute. The Cutter shooting Nate and Sully was about of an over criticization, because we've seen Marlow was willing to send guys to kill Nate when he was a kid, so if anything, her unwilling to kill them was out of character for her as opposed to Cutter shooting them and being suspicious because of it. I'm still not sure why they wanted the hallucinogen from the city since it's essentially the same as what they used on Cutter and Nate earlier. Granted it seems more like they wanted the Djinn in the urn, but it's supposed to be the source of the hallucinogen in the city's water, and we don't even know if it's really a Djinn. I think Nate and Sully should have gotten to Marlow and Talbot after they brought it up and opened it to see why they wanted it. The chase sequences of young Nate and Nate chasing Talbot right after his hallucination run felt like they dragged on a bit too long. 23:00 The body of one of Marlow's men, I just assumed it was an unfortunate victim of the spiders, especially since they are introduced shortly after that. Plus, the spiders have been shown that they were able to follow Nate and Sully all the way to the tower of the palace. 27:30 Talbot mentioned before leaving that Nate and Sully's torch was going out, which I assume is why Sully dropped the torch. Granted the developers probably could have added a bit to the texture of the torch so it actually faded and went out before Sully dropped it, but it is explained. 1:07:44 The whole pirate side story was pointless and didn't make much sense. The lead pirate claims he captured Sully and was going to get information out of him when he couldn't get it from Nate, leaving the wrecked cargo ship to go through a massive ship graveyard to a cruise ship where he leaves for the open ocean and Nate finds out that he never had Sully to begin with. Why did the pirate goad Nate into this and what would have been his plan if Nate didn't actually make it to the ship? Naughty Dog should have just abandoned this whole pointless side story and had Nate be captured at the airport where the plane was going to leave, he hears about the cargo plane and hitches a ride. I didn't notice it for the most part in the first two games and until about halfway through this one, but one thing that really bugged me was how you were given a good weapon, like an RPG or the Dragon during a fight sequence and shortly after that fight is done, Nate just randomly drops the weapon for no reason. I first saw it when I got the T-Bolt in One Shot at This chapter on Crushing during the big area where you had to try and stealth some guys before climbing onto the roof and splitting up with Elena, after that I had the suppresser again even though I dropped it long before that. Then I really started to notice this trend when it happened two times during The Settlement chapter when I got an RPG after the second major fight of the chapter. I figured I could carry it and use it in the next sequence, but then Nate had to squeeze through a crack in the wall and all of the sudden the RPG was dropped and replaced with the M9 for no reason. Then that next sequence was with the turret where you had to shoot the pillars under it and then two heavies. After clearing that area, I found another RPG and was carrying it to the next part only to have Nate be sneak attacked by the guy that drags him down and there's a bunch of people shooting at him, and I had the M9 again. As a side note, I thought it was established in Uncharted 1 that Francis Drake's ring was made after he supposedly died, which would have been well after his journey for Queen Elizabeth. Someone at Naughty Dog didn't do a simple

When a relatively complex game is developed there are always bits that don’t make it into the game, either because they are not ready in time or they turn out to not work very well. The whole pirate/ship part looks like something that some over ambitious level designer was trying to make, possibly for a DLC or maybe even for Uncharted 2, and it was not finished in time to be used. The fact that it’s still kind of janky also supports it being some repurposed cut content.
