The Game Gear Micro Is Finally Here

If they had made something about the size of the original GBA with like 20 games on it they really would have had something worth looking into.
It makes more sense in accessorized Japan and that's as far as it goes.

TBH, I don't get why they didn't do that or even one that was a mere half the size of the original, but with improved battery life. They probably could have still made it for under $100 and sold tons of them. Then again, I also don't get why there's so few games when Sega had so many great first party titles for their hardware. A slightly larger handheld with more games and they might have been able to talk people into paying closer to $100 for the set.

I feel like Sega wanted to go super-novelty here because maybe the sales would not have been much different with a larger GG.
As one of the few kids who had a Game Gear, this really disappoints me. They could have made it around the same size of the GBA (with a screen that is proportionally bigger than the GG) and it would have been perfect. I guess we have to wait for the Game Boy classic to get a proper handheld mini console.

It's nice to see that they're also bringing back retro Sega execs for the launch. I'd hate to think they'd do something that made sense like launching this in the US or having a US version of it. It's sad to see how many nice things get destroyed by Japanese companies because the top execs don't know what they're doing. This is a bit like those mini consoles that Nintendo has been producing where they didn't bother to produce enough of them. I thought about getting the NES classic, but ultimately chose to just buy vintage carts and dump them myself for emulation. So, Nintendo wound up with nothing from me because they mismanaged the launch. This is more or less the same thing, a version for the US would make sense as the US was a larger market for them than Japan was.

@@sweet_sukeban4022 Wow, surprising. I have an OLED Vita and it's hard to read kanji in Persona 4 Golden, so I figured even kana would be a pain on that tiny screen.
I did pick up one of these from Japanese Amazon! I love it for what it is to me, and that's a an itty bitty slice of my childhood. Rather than is being a truly portable smaller game gear, I looked at it as a commemorative novelty item that was also designed to function. The Game Gear Micro *is* absolutely micro, but it's almost all the cooler for it. The buttons and switches all work rather than being on there just for show, and it is playable for a short period time because that screen really isn't too bad. I would have absolutely loved this as a kid, even though my parents would have scolded me for playing on something so small. As an adult, it's an expensive reminder of my childhood that takes up very little space and it's more usable than a scale model would be.
This device certainly makes no sense to us, but they love these type of micro devices in Japan, that's why it was just Japan exclusive I guess. I also was thinking to get one to use as a keychain :)
I almost forgot this was even a thing coming out. The hype came in and out so fast it was like in one ear out another.
This could've been so much better. Just imagine a GG the size of a GBA, 40 games with 2 Newly translated obscure Japanese games, or 2 Beta games, support for original cartridges and TV output. Such a missed opportunity

Even without cart support and tv out, that would have been great. The GG has a special place in my heart cause its the only handheld I had as a kid. But, I don't think Sega wanted to put too much effort into this. It was only released in Japan, after all.

Even for that, it's pointless. Get an 8BitDo Zero 2 controller for your keychain and emulate on your phone with the Genesis Plus GX core in RetroArch. There is no reason to own one of these, except as maybe a novelty decoration for collectors. They should have made it a more usable size, or just not done it at all.
If the screens weren't so small, I'd probably buy the yellow one. I'd love to play those Shining Force games.
I think a Saturn Dreamcast hybrid console could be cool, but it wouldn't probably be as nostalgic to some people compared to dedicated systems.
