TBH, I don't get why they didn't do that or even one that was a mere half the size of the original, but with improved battery life. They probably could have still made it for under $100 and sold tons of them. Then again, I also don't get why there's so few games when Sega had so many great first party titles for their hardware. A slightly larger handheld with more games and they might have been able to talk people into paying closer to $100 for the set.

I get your sentiment overall, but Sega is still making moves. I just don't think the home console/PC space is their moneymaker compared to the arcade/entertainment industry. It's nice to see that they're also bringing back retro Sega execs for the launch. I'd hate to think they'd do something that made sense like launching this in the US or having a US version of it. It's sad to see how many nice things get destroyed by Japanese companies because the top execs don't know what they're doing. This is a bit like those mini consoles that Nintendo has been producing where they didn't bother to produce enough of them. I thought about getting the NES classic, but ultimately chose to just buy vintage carts and dump them myself for emulation. So, Nintendo wound up with nothing from me because they mismanaged the launch. This is more or less the same thing, a version for the US would make sense as the US was a larger market for them than Japan was.

I did pick up one of these from Japanese Amazon! I love it for what it is to me, and that's a an itty bitty slice of my childhood. Rather than is being a truly portable smaller game gear, I looked at it as a commemorative novelty item that was also designed to function. The Game Gear Micro *is* absolutely micro, but it's almost all the cooler for it. The buttons and switches all work rather than being on there just for show, and it is playable for a short period time because that screen really isn't too bad. I would have absolutely loved this as a kid, even though my parents would have scolded me for playing on something so small. As an adult, it's an expensive reminder of my childhood that takes up very little space and it's more usable than a scale model would be.

Even for that, it's pointless. Get an 8BitDo Zero 2 controller for your keychain and emulate on your phone with the Genesis Plus GX core in RetroArch. There is no reason to own one of these, except as maybe a novelty decoration for collectors. They should have made it a more usable size, or just not done it at all.
