I think bloomburrow has potential to have some really sick cards given that they have the entire animal kingdom to work with. Also totally agree with your point about sets that take place in a single location

I feel the same way about these sets that are isolated to events or small areas. Strange choices. 2024 feels like a huge step down from a year that had a Phyrexian invasion, LOTR, a return to Eldraine and dinosaurs.

I guess maybe that could be what Treasure Tokens are?

I think there is a difference between " Remastered" and " Remastered". The former is always in paper and is intended to be a best-of of cards from that plane, the latter is just a way of making pre-Arena cards available digitally.

Oh yeah, for sure these cards are a lot of fun. I'm VERY tempted by those Doctor Who decks. I think my issues is I'd never want to play them against anything other than another Doctor Who deck

I feel like these decks were made by Doctor Who player, for Doctor Who players and a bit low in power compared to the other commander decks. I've played against them and they were always far behind

@@RedBobcatGames Indeed I do remember Both Eldrazi Winters, the second one was worse in my opinion because of Void Winnower and Reality Smasher and such. I don't blame the format, I blame the Designers for Eldrazi, OG Innistrad had no such nonsense, it had it's own nonsense, but it was not the insanity that was the First Eldrazi or Second Eldrazi winters for Modern. I wanted more sets that felt like Innistrad, as in Well Designed, Full of Character, and Worth Playing.

Yeah, couldn't agree more. I feel like Theors was the last time I was actually interested in the lore and story of a plane too. All these new ones like Capenna, Ikoria, Stryxhaven and Kaldheim are here and gone before I even start to get interested

I may very well put out a video doing just that once we know more. I like Fallout. I'm just really not a fan of the seeming reduction in attention and care to magic's own IP and story, in favour of chasing other peoples. I may also do a video on the Assassin's Creed "Beyond Boosters" when we know more... but for other reasons...

I'm genuinely rally hyped for Thunder Junction. I LOOVEE wild west settings, and they have a lot of options in terms of classic gothic country shenanigans (eg. Gambling with the devil Devil Went Down to Georgia style, or the mysterious Sherif strutting into town to duel Big Iron style.). I don't believe that they're going to be limited in the slightest

I'm hoping Bloomburrow will be a great set. I've been waiting for a plane with no humanoid creatures on it since time in memoriam. Very excited! I also think that if WotC is going to stick with a 1 set block structure, these non-massive plots can probably work fine. MOM just had too much going on to be restrained to a single set. A smaller story can give story moments more room to breathe. Of course, it can create the opposite problem; Not enough material to work with and containing a lot of bloat as you've mentioned. I'll withhold judgment until MKM releases and I read the stories.

As Bloomburrow was introduced as being "The start of the Dragon Storm Arc", I'm worried they haven't learned their lessons, and this will be another Kaldheim situation. A plane introduced, not because the setting is cool and to be fleshed out and explored, but to introduce a maguffin to the over all plot. I think Bloomburrow will do fine if there is no main plot, and it's all just side stories exploring the world. I remain hopeful, but sceptical

The Duskmourn will be more like psychological horror in my opinion oposing to Innistrad ghotic nature. Beside bringing the 70/80 estethics it will be more in form of fear of unknown. For me this is time of experimentig and I am willing to see this new approach to mtg.

Sure. But I fear the reason behind the experimentation is not for the benefit or betterment of the game, but instead the profits of the shareholders. Creativity doesn't always florish under the boot capitalism. I guess we'll see

Between your comments on Thunder Junction and Murders at Karlov Manor, I am honestly curious. Do you feel that it is ever appropriate to have a smaller and more intimate story for an mtg set (as opposed to a small side-story for a larger story)? You seem to oppose the idea on both old planes and new planes. I get your point that it feels weird if a set’s story is only represented in a small subset of its cards (especially if one or more colors are missing). To say that mtg can only do stories about wars, apocalypses, factions, and explorations of new planes seems a bit limiting, though.

The answer to your question is yes and no, depending on what you're asking. If you're asking whether I believe it's possible to have a satisfying set around A (singular) small story, then no. Unless that story and set is about two factions or opposing perspective which between them, represent all 5 colours of magic, OR that set doesn't include all 5 colours in the cards to begin with. If you're asking if it's possible to do small and intimate stories in magic at all, then yes. But to make sure the narative is fully fleshed out, I believe it should be done over multiple sets. Have 5 stories (say), across 3 sets, each with their own beginning, middle and end for each set. Kaldheim would have been a perfect place to do such a thing. There were 10 realms there. What were any of them? Why establish them if we're going to do nothing with them before we blow the plane up? Wouldn't it have been better to actually tell some stories in full so we can get to know each faction before they're wiped out? That would have been a good place to tell 10 smaller stories, one for each faction. But spread them out. As I say, I'll do a video on this to talk further on my thoughts at some point

I'm really hoping that Duskmourn isn't just set in some random haunted mansion on a random plane, but the plane itself is an unending mansion of terror. Humanity adapting to the endless halls. Groups of people banding together to fight either the horrors or each other. The daily life of people hunting through the halls for untouched rooms, hoping to find supplies that make no sense being there but are their only hope for survival. Just make it a spookier version of the endless IKEA SCP and I'd be so happy! But I know WotC won't have it be like this. It'll be as you said, just focusing on a single place in some random plane that could have been Inistrad. Also commenting to help the KZread algorithm.

i am personnaly really excited about karlov manner because it looks from the very few cards we have seen that it will expand on archetypes that have been made but not fully focused on. i think bloomborrow will be a good set becasue of they theme but idk if it will be a bit to late

Sure. It's nice to see Investigate back. I just wish it were on more Innistrad cards to be honest. That might be my bitterness on not getting a physical print of the Shadows Over Innistrad Remaster talking there though

​@@RedBobcatGames Well they even mentioned that they kind of messed up by making a "crime plane" which has no government or law enforcement. (so what makes it... 'criminal'?) This investigation set would have been the perfect opportunity to rectify that oversight in story by establishing some kind of new law enforcement of the plane and how things were going to be different. It would give you an opportunity to explore the larger changes to the plane (thus showing how all the colors and creatures are "involved" in the set) while still having the specific mystery be the hook of the set. Heck have the murder be that of the recently "stranded" Ob Nixilis and it could have been a lot of fun. Besides how do you have a murder mystery on Ravinca? Can't you just ask the ghost of the victim?

I don't think wotc is going to think as much about this as me, but my thought is duskmourn is a demiplane type deal that's just a haunted mansion that you used to be able to accidentally stumble into pre-mending, when portals between planes were around, then the mending cut it off from everything, and now that omenpaths are a thing people found it again. Maybe a non-planeswalker wanders in, gets lost, and now they have to survive and find their way back to the portal they came in from, possibly with the help of a planeswalker who is there on purpose for something. I could see how to write a good story and good world building to make a haunted mansion plane work, but wotc is known for setting up interesting ideas and whiffing the execution, so idk. I hope they do it well, but I'm not going to be surprised if it isn't great

I really want the cowboy set to be cool, but I'm honestly not very hopefull due to the character line up, but Bloomburrow sounds cool as heck, the rest don't have a lot of potencial imo

I was going to comment that Bloomburrow looks cool based on the concept art and the rest look kind of boring but it seems like a lot of other people have already expressed that sentiment. Instead I'll try to guess what creatures each color will have. Birds will probably be white and blue. White will probably also have mice and maybe rabbits. Black actually has a large pool of critters to choose from already, I imagine that there will be a few rat and frog cards, and maybe a bat. Then green obviously has a lot of options, based on the necromancer squirrel in the concept art I assume that squirrels will be green and black. Red and blue are the hardest colors to figure out. Rabbits sort of make sense as red creatures, and blue has otters I guess. I doubt that they're going to just have talking fish, since there's not a lot of ways to get characters like that to interact with land dwelling characters. It's the same problem that they sometimes have with incorporating merfolk into the story, but worse, fish don't have arms or legs so they can't really believably form a society. Wait, I forgot about turtles. Obviously blue will have a bunch of turtle cards. Oh well. Post comment.

That would be interesting if the colours were divided by class. So Red were Reptiles, Blue were Fish, White were Birds, Green were Mammals, Black were... invertebrates? So, Red / Blue Creatures would be Amphibians? And White / Green would be Flying Squirrels? Okay, maybe this doesn't work

Looking forward to most of the *actual* sets. Not looking forward to yet more Universes Beyond or Horizons.

I am really excited for Duskmourn. MTG is at its best when the horror element is strong. I was really disappointed when I heard about Bloomburrow. I was like, "Are you kidding me? That is so childish! Talking animals? I grew out of illustrated children's storybooks. Maybe I will sit this one out." I have calmed down a bit since then. It does look more original and imaginative than "The Detective Hat set" or "The Cowboy Hat set" as some people mocking call them.

So I've been sat here trying to think how I would have reworded that sentence to be clearer. Because I mean a plane where anthropomorphic animals have established a human like world and filled all the roles usually performed by humans. But that feels very clunky. I'm not sure I'd change it. However, your point still stands though

I played most of the last few standard sets I will be taking a break till bloomburrow. I keep thinking magic is going to get knocked down a peg. Learn make better card quality not raise the price of your entry booster box. But their sales keep going through the roof.

Thanks. Though you maybe missed the section at 50 seconds in where I talk about how good a job they've done with Ravnica Remastered and how much I'm looking forward to it. So it would at about 1:57 that I start to get negative. That sounds worse than 5 minites in I suppose, but also the video's only 12 minutes long and not 30 so I get it's a matter of perspective. What sort of thing would you like to see a video on? So far my positive videos are my least watched

i'm pretty disgusted by hasbro and not really interested in new mtg. if something cool comes out i'll look into it but i'm certainly not just rying to pick up some of everything like i have been for the last couple years. they already printed the cards i want so i don't find WOTC to matter all that much because they can get fucked and i'll still be able to enjoy myself.
