As for more disruption: The Gogoro charging stations can and do act as grid storage. Gogoro has been licensing its battery and charging tech to other scooter and motorcycle manufacturers.

That's really good. It makes a lot of sense, really they're a battery/grid company more than a vehicle company much like Tesla is robotics (and others) not cars and McDonalds is real estate. Bosch standardised power tool batteries and now lots of manufacturers make interchangeable ones which immediately makes them the equivalent of AAA cells that aren't antique tech and opens up your options. Doesn't really matter which tool you want from which manufacturer.

I am an early Gogoro adopter. I have their original series 1 designs. I have had it for around 7 years and it’s been amazing. At the time they called them the Teslas of scooters. Ive only ever had to pay for new tires and brake pads. We now own a Model 3 so we are an all EV Taiwan family. Gogoro has so many more models now to fit different budgets and drivers.

In 1890, when the first electric cars where made, their batteries were swapped in service stations built for this purpose. Actually, in NYC, in the early 1900s, all Taxis were electric cars with swappable batteries because the noise from gasoline cars frightened the horses. SHORTLY: nothing new in more than 100 years.

I've been wondering why corporations are going to build charging stations instead of just having battery exchange stations..... design the vehicles for quick battery swaps.

We have a Silence S04 on order, expected to be delivered before end of 2023. The L7e type vehicle has 2 swappable batteries under the seats, that you can pull out on a trolley, with a total capacity of around 11kw, good for a range of 149km (92miles), up to speeds of 85km/h (52miles/h). My point this is already a thing in Europe, although not mean Europeans know about it, I expect this will happen soon.

Which country are you in if you don't mind me asking? I've seen it around online and it's on my list of future quadricycles to consider (like the Ark/Dogood Zero which is a Chinese import). I suspect the Silence is way better than the Ami but that's not hard because the cup holder in that is not in reach of the driver from what I've seen so.... terrible design. Bosch standardised the power tool battery industry and most tools accept their batteries so Gogoro/Silence etc could easily come up with a couple of standards for battery swap too which would be great. But for me the Silence appealed for the reasons Zack and Jesse mentioned - ability to take a battery back to your flat and charge it up, that gets you going if your battery is dead and you don't have a driveway or on street charging. Plus cost. Obviously cost :D

@@jonevansauthor I'm living in Belgium. After owning a Citroen AMI myself and testing lots of competitors I have can say the Silence quality is amazing. Only thing I had wish they would have add to the product is ABS. Given the speed it reach the breaks could have been better but thats the same story with all quadricycles I know off. In the case of the AMI this was less of a concern to me because it could only reach 45km/h (28m/h). Nevertheless indeed if you compare vehicle total different price brackets, the AMI is less than half of the price of the silence and that make a difference of course. We were quit pleased with the AMI for the price paid. The weakest part of the AMI was the limited speed. That's the main reason why we sold it (during a period were the prices of secondhand vehicles were crazy, we sold it to a dealer for more than we paid after 6 months of ownership). The battery swapability is the only reason why we ordered the Silence. I see it as an incredible game changer, the more because they are interchangeable with the scooter-lineup of the company. For me the advantage of the silence battery comparing to the GoGoro is the capacity. With 5.4kw you can power decent amount of other appliances. Indeed the Silence battery also can power electric components though an optional mobile inverter. To give an idea we have a decent amount of solar panel on the house and a home battery but that is sometimes not enough to cover the night. So what we could envision is using the silence batteries charged by the solar panels to power some high consuming devices during the evening (entertainment system, mobile electric heater...) Options are limitless, transport devices will become much more that a means of transport. To be continued...

@@bartpuesthanks for all that, it's really helpful. I live in a hilly area but suspect the Ami could handle it, however I would benefit from a bit more power, and there are plenty of roads I'd use regularly where 40-55mph would be helpful. The batteries sound great - the detail that they can also be used as a power bank for appliances is great. No need to duplicate that functionality then. Cost is definitely an issue since there's an argument to be had for having a second hard tiny car at a certain point. However, the best I know of in Europe is the Smart and Mercedes cunningly did nothing to give it a modern range as has been demonstrated in Chinese clones. I suspect because they just gutted the ICE design and put batteries in it. Supposedly it'll be £16K when it comes to the UK but we'll see - and I'm also not sure if they're doing it right hand drive for us or not which is a definite 'would get something RHD instead' issue for me. Can't find out if they've done it or not either way which is typical of these companies sadly - they do terrible marketing (there's a lack of good pictures of it despite it being in production). It'd be driveable, but I'd pay more for the seat to be on the side that's safer for me and importantly, that everything like car park ticketing systems is setup for! :D Still, more of these existing is awesome because they'll lead to competition in the segment, fewer massive vehicles on our roads and lower prices.

I would like to see a self lifting/exchanging battery for agricultural machines and construction. It should be self contained and rugged with built in AC and DC charger and 380V outlet. Fixed size, fixed heavy duty connectors, with built in hydraulics and air support. Mid sized ones for tractors, larger ones for combines, very small ones for skid-steers. For 4-8 hours of on-site work. And a trailer to deliver fresh charged battery packs to the field or construction site if needed.

My understanding is that you don’t have to use any app or payment card. The battery you put in identifies you and charges not per swap but the amount of electricity used. Then it pops out a replacement battery which then essentially acts as your ID.

I tend to invest in stocks that are "futuristic" or disruptive. I think this is a company that has a bright future in terms of success similar to what Musk did with EVs. At a price per share that is similar to a coffee at Starbucks, I will definitely buy, dollar-wise, an equivalent amount of Gogoro stock at the "Wall Street Casino" that I would spent for a month of coffee at Starbucks. If I couldn't afford the coffee then I couldn't afford to gamble on the stock. BTW, I have gambled on a few stocks whose companies were just starting out and have seen a growth in the values of those companies increased by more than several hundred percent. One such company grew in value by almost 1000%. So based on the stats you mentioned, I see no reason not to try my luck again.

Unless they did a WeWork I suspect they're pretty stable, and certainly Foxconn are. Realistically the only way they'd fail at this point is if they were undercharging for everything to build market share and continued to do so. I can't see anyone displacing them at this stage.

Thank you for sharing! Sounds very interesting! I am not ready to invest into this company yet but will follow! The 22 miles of range figure sounds way too small, even for that small vehicle and even with swapping - I would ballpark closer to 50miles (75-100 miles!) and then you have a true disruptor..

I wonder what others small-ice applications the batterys could be used in, for example golf carts, I was at a festival where they were whizzing around all day and night so battery swapping would make sense, another could be to replace small generators. I also think if they don't, it's only a matter of time till someone 3d prints an adaptor

In the US, in Florida (and perhaps other places) golf carts as local vehicles are already a thing, so I'm sure this would go over well over there. They have the advantage that they don't need doors and windshields there much of the time so the vehicle can be lighter. In Europe the quadricycles mostly have doors and the Twizy usually got them added because the convertible lifestyle in northern Europe is silly (or rather, the top down all the time is). Lots of US people think small cars wouldn't work there, but that's because they have no clue what's going on around their country or what it's like in big cities. I'm sure New Yorkers would love this, if they wanted to move slower than walking speed but with a roof :D They'd sell a tonne in London.

Two. Questions: 1) what happens when you come to a battery station location and all the batteries are in the charging state? 2) what happens when you take an extra batteries out and you come to a station and want to replace them and you would be forced to take out the same amount of batteries without needing them all?

  • @andymetzen

    1. Use the app to find nearby stations with available batteries before heading over. This will help you avoid running into the problem of all the batteries being in use. You can also reserve batteries in advance. If all of the batteries are charging, the app will notify you when a battery is ready to be swapped. 2. When you swap batteries at a swapping station, you must take out the same number of batteries that you are swapping in. You cannot take out extra batteries.

over 10 years ago I first saw a Go Go Ro scoter by the 101 area and thought it was the best concept battery swap scoter. But People in Tapei were laughing. And I have seen the batties swap grow to the Patrol stations in Taiwan not just limited to their dealership. I don't know why Vietnam does not have Gogoro as it is one of the most scoter cities. Btw I have never seen it in the Philippines Metro Manila is it in MOA, BCG or Makati?? It will help the pollution and the worst traffic in the world. In Europe, it will totally work in the small narrow streets. Go go ro has huge potential and batties swap patterns but growth is too slow. Lime or the other e-scoter bike companies are even faster. They can totally put more batteries in the foxCon car

  • @jonevansauthor

This is likely not a car in the literal or legal sense, my guess is it's equivalent to an L6e Light Quadricycle like the Citroen Ami (bad) which goes up to 28mph/45kph (legal limit in Europe including UK). L7e Heavy quadricycles like the Silence 04 (good) and Microlino (bad*) are allowed to do 55mph/90kph and will have different licence requirements potentially (depends on country). Key point: quadricycles are NOT cars. Meaning they're much safer than mopeds but don't have to have the same standards as cars. Otherwise they'd just be cars and much more expensive. There's also a weight limit of about 450Kgs unladen and without batteries and seat limits as well (2 for L6 4 for L7 I think). Fully Charged can't help but call them cars which is insanely annoying and irresponsible because it gives the FUD crowd ammo to use against civilised people 'Oh look at this electric car it looks like a toy' and nonsense like that. Car like vehicle is the best we can do but also more than sufficient for most of our trips. Ideally Gogoro/Foxconn will offer both categories - the light and heavy - because that is ideal for deliveries or local city taxis. Oh and articles did say it's supposed to have self driving tech, which seems optimistic but perhaps the hardware is easily solved so it's not a massive extra cost to have it? Not sure if you mentioned that. As someone pointed out below whose got a Silence on order (Spanish company) they're already using battery swap tech similar to this, although they don't penetrate as well as the Taiwanese solution yet.** Dogood Zero (aka Ark Zero) is a Chinese import coming to the UK in massive quantities of 200 already... but hey, it's a start and looks far better than the Citroen Ami which is an awful example of the form factor but at least does exist. I'm pretty sure I've seen other companies aim at battery swap small vehicles with - a removable pack - but Gogoro is the only one who've managed to create a standard of sorts (aside from Bosch with power tools - possibly e-bikes?). One option that could happen is of course to have a battery swap facility in the boot of your car. That would guarantee you get the range to get to a public charger, but the rest of the battery needn't be swappable. Just like it'd also be cool to be able to plug in an Anker power bank from within the boot while travelling but probably a bit more tricky! I'm really excited about the prospect of quadricycles (as far as a Brit can be excited about anything less significant than a mass extinction level asteroid) because all I really care about is a car like vehicle (and these are NOT cars and I doubt Project X will be either) with a roof that can get me too and from the local city. Battery swap ability would give me all the range I need. An Ami would work for me due to local road, but I'd prefer an L7e quad for the 50mph speed to significantly extend the radius I'd be willing to drive. *Because it's wildly overpriced and for the wealthy socialites and irresponsible, as they failed to learn any production or design lessons from Tesla. But it'd probably be really handy and fun to drive, if you can get into it which might be hard for the less physically able of us. It might be fabulous ten years from now if they bring the price down, which they make no noise about so I doubt they will, can increase production which I doubt, or it gets cheap on the second hand market due to competition and them having gone bust. **Yes, the innuendo was deliberate, yes I'm childish.
