The Future Has Already Happened
Ойын-сауық
HBO's The Last of Us took place in the year 2023, now the past. I talk a bit about other past-tense futures from 1984 to 2001, and how odd it feels to live in the future.

So! What did I miss?

Part of me wants to say the "Sentinels run America" future from X-Men, either the comics (where it was 2013) or the films (where it was 2023), but both of those bad futures were averted so I'm not sure they count, and honestly the timeline flows so well without them it's no loss

💯 Mark Fisher has also written interesting things on the "lost futures" we were promised by modernity that were crushed under the disappointment of neoliberalism
Dang, We Didn't Start the Fire goes different to how I remember
I like that cheeky little Shakespeare reference at the end. Even in a horrible, dystopian, nightmarish future, he will forever be quoted by everyone.

Contrasting the fictional events with the real music that came out in the relevant years is a brilliant touch. Just making the audience lean all the way into the absurdity before breaking our hearts. Beautiful.
this reminded me of the league of extraordinary gentlemen video with the timeline of fictional years and blink-and-you-miss-it annotations
Considering both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have Sinn Fein as the largest party in their respective legislatures, that TNG prediction might end up being pretty much accurate
I genuinely smiled when "The Tenth Planet" reference came up. Love that silly sci-fi show so much.
God, I miss when people were optimistic for the future.

I think people have always been both optimistic and pessimistic about the future on and off; it's just that right now we're in the middle of a trough in confidence in the concept.

Aye that’s why I dig IGY by Donald Fagen, it’s of course a wry sarcastic song (again don’t expect sincerity from Steely Dan) but the song itself is about the naive optimism of the 1950s view of the future. An optimism we’ve long since outgrown like a cultural version of The Logical Song.
I cannot tell you how happy that Double Dragons reference made me
Oh god, remembering how they made immortals space aliens for a movie before (very wisely) retconning that hurts me on an almost physical level
Don't forget if you're an MST3K fan: The Phantom Planet was set in 1980 (aka "Our Old Future" as pointed out by Crow T. Robot); Time Chasers had the future set in 2041
I love your in depth longer form pieces but this little treat was lovely!
What an absolutely mind-bending video how did you even approach making this? The editing and media lift alone is absolutely crazy, super well done as always!
I remember you used to do these sorts of shorter videos. This video reminds me how much I used to enjoy them.
Thank you so much for uploading videos with captions
I really like how tight and focused this was. I neglected to say that earlier. I hope you do more shortform content if you want, and if it is less onerous for you to do so. This was lovely.
Another awesome video, & I actually love the short/sweet format you delivered. Excellent job! Probably will be my go-to video of yours now when i introduce new friends to your content. Keep rockin’! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
This was beautiful I'm crying.
I think my favourite use of On the Nature of Daylight is from Arrival, which, relevant to the topic of this video, comes when the main character gains the ability to feel that the future has already happened.
Don’t forget in 2017, during the Second American Civil War, Barb Wire owned a nightclub in Steel Harbor, "the last free city" in a United States ravaged by war
Happy New Year Bro

Good see you back, Oancitizen!
This is a lovely video, that gave me a lot to think about.
Sooooo great, Kyle!!!
I love your use of music. 👏🏻
Damn that was perfect, Kyle. That last bit killed me.
Amazing Kyle. ❤
This came out lovely 💟
A glorious collection of events! 😊
Was hoping for Dan Dare and Space: 1999 references, yay.😁
I don't want flying cars: I want robust and well-funded public transit connecting walkable urban planning.

no need, I first read it in a collection of short stories about dogs and let me tell you, that very much an example of "Don't judge a book by its cover." even still it took seeing the movie to spell out what the ending was about.
its not so bad that the Jetsons future didn't come true, according to that we'd also be living in houses on poles because the pollution is so bad they constantly have to be raised to stay above it.
Keanu was fine in Mnemonic.
You should have titled this Dates of Futures Past.
Yay lathe of heaven reference! Haven't read the book but man do I love the weird ass 80s PBS movie. KZread needs more videos about it
Anyone else find it funny that both the Metro & The Last of Us destroys civilization in 2013 while having games coming out in that year?
I consider this a companion piece to the Doomerist Cinema video, or at least a distant cousin that's always invited to the Thanksgiving dinners
Loved it
A space Odyssey so nice we did it twice!
Love this
And now I'm crying.
Wow, a Captain Future reference - cool!
THANK YOU for mentioning The Apple! 😂 Highlander 2? NOOOOOO!!!!
I don’t know why, but KZread has stopped showing me your videos, despite the fact that I’m subscribed. I only just found this.
Incidentally, this video articulates what I actually find interesting about multiverse stories as well.
1000 years from now a descendant of Kyle might update the list including TITAN A. E., more Star Trek, Batman Beyond, Minority Report, more Dr. Who, phases 4 and 5 of the MCU, Will Smith's After Earth and everything else 2024-3024.

what would the future version of youtube be
The future Conan? All the way in THE YEARRR TWO THOOOOOUSAAAND! Edit: and it's in the opening bits? You clever sob.
Love it
Yeah this dreams of lost future stuff reminded me of a 99pi episode
Only 1 METAL GEAR reference? We now live in a year well past when REVENGEANCE happened.
Your video making style kind of reminds me of Pop Culture Detective, but with a lot more frenetic energy, if that makes sense
You missed an alien fortress ship crashing on Earth in 1999, ending the Global Civil War, and the subsequent Zentraedi invasion in 2013/14.
I get it.
Your video coming out in the future is about the future???
I expected you to make a Future Boy Conan reference. But you didn't.
I thought you missed Demolition Man but that’s 2032, not 2023, 8 more years lol
I was born in 1984.
LoEG has a really weird timeline.
Bruh hit me with 7 minutes of terrible soothsaying and KO'd me with Bill and Frank's last day.

Not entirely, he just doesn't want too many people to develop a parasocial bond with him. "Don't be a fan of me. Definitely don't stan me! You know the song 'Stan', right? You know how that song ends? A fifth of vodka and a murder-suicide! Over Eminem!""
You will not besmirch my man Keanu Reeves. There is no -- NO! -- other mode of acting that would be appropriate for the script of Johnny Mnemonic. Your "better acting" would make the movie worse. Technical improvement of *anything* would have made the movie worse, I will not explain. This is the most suitable acting.
