That wispy, fog-like patch of Andromeda seen with the naked eye reveals itself beautifully on clear November nights. I have spotted it many times over the years. What one sees is the faint glow of Andromeda’s central bulge. Even at a distance of over two million light years, that galaxy is immense, for your eyes are not seeing the full picture. It is awe inspiring and thought provoking. Give it a look!

I love all of these videos, but too many are pitched as mass-scale collision events, when the only consequence for future inhabitants will be at most a more interesting night sky. It's nice to see that this one disclaims that inference, at least at the end.

The gravitational effects the stars have on each other will cause major changes to the shapes of both galaxies, or even a combining of both groups of stars.

Although the universe is expanding on the grand scale, relatively nearby galaxies are attracted to one another due to the gravity of the dark matter present between them. At a relatively local level, this gravity is stronger than the forces causing the expansion of the universe. This causes the objects within galaxy filaments to coalesce even as the filaments themselves (separated by voids) move away from one another. On a much smaller scale than galaxy filaments, the dominance of gravitational attraction ensures that planets keep revolving around their parent stars. On a grander scale, objects that are currently further than about 14 billion light years from us are moving away from us at a rate faster than the speed of light.

This is going to be such a spectacular event, unlike any other galactic event within our own universe that humanity has ever witnessed. More than likely, humanity will be flourishing on perhaps other galaxies or planets, since the technology of intergalactic travel will have long since been mastered once the Collison of both the Milky way and the Andromeda galaxies do occur. How does astronomers measure the speed of the two galaxies,as they race toward each other?

Imagine two cars about to collide but they just phase through each other because spaces between molecules were too large. The space is such an empty place.

Why would they collide? If the universe is expanding and we all are going the same speed, because we are expanding that say we Getting further from each other in distance... So how can w e collide???
